Game Overview
I do love a little likeable alliteration, don’t you? I think we can safely assume that AvatarUX does, although I guess it’s also possible that the title Popwins PixiePop came about as a kind of happy accident. The latest game in the popular Popwins progression has 243 starting pay way, potentially increasing to as many as 32,768; that’s a little bit deceiving though, as symbols only need to be located on adjacent reels in this game to award a win – there’s no need for a winning way to begin with the leftmost reel. Whilst the return-to-player (RTP) percentage of 96% is bang on the industry average, the top prize of 20,000x the total stake is far higher than that offered by many other online slots.
The ‘Popwins’ part of the title refers to a gameplay mechanic whereby winning symbols will ‘pop’, removing them from the playfield. After this, the game will insert two new symbols in their place, thus increasing the height of that reel. The whole process can repeat indefinitely as long as new winning combinations are shown on the reels, although the base game limits the size of the reels at 5×6 symbol positions. An automatic nudge modifier can bump symbols up or down if doing so will improve your current win, whilst the free spins feature also includes a random multiplier feature as well. Speaking of the free spins, you can win up to 11 depending on the number of triggering bonus symbols, but there’s also a bonus buy menu with four increasingly generous – and expensive – combinations of features.
It’s been a while since I last played a Popwins game, and I had almost forgotten just how much fun they can be! If you’re in the same boat (or have never played one at all!) then I’d absolutely recommend giving our free demo slot of Popwins PixiePop a spin – it’s available to play below:
Pixiepop Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
The Popwins franchise has been a big hit with players, so much so that I suspect it’s single-handedly responsible for AvatarUX’s rapid rise within the online slots industry. Many of these games have catchy titles – Kitty POPpins, for example, or Zombie aPOPalypse, so I believe that the name of this one is simply continuing that trend. The pixie theme has been well-executed, and I particularly liked the cartoon-style character symbol artwork that occupies much of the available space on the playfield. For me, this graphical style makes me think of classic animated Disney movies such as Aladdin or The Lion King, which is no bad thing!
On the downside, the most valuable of those symbols – the red pixie – only has a payout of 6x the total bet for a full payway of five of a kind. There’s also an orange pixie that pays 5x the bet for all five of her symbols, a purple one at 4x, green paying 3x, and two more coloured in blue and turquoise which share equal returns of 2x the bet for a five of a kind combination. The low-paying symbols are divided into two groups, with five aces or kings paying 1.5x the total bet for a complete payway, and the queens/jacks/tens offering a little less at 1x each.
Moving on to the betting range, we have minimum/maximum limits of €0.20 and €100.00 per spin, respectively. There’s a decent amount t of intermediate stakes between these two values, so I don’t anticipate low or high rollers having any problems when trying to find a bet comparable to their bankroll.
Base Game & Modifiers
It’s time to go into more detail about the all-important Popwins gameplay mechanic, as that’s a key part of what makes games such as this so appealing! The base game utilises a standard 5×3 video slot layout when Popwins PixiePop is first opened, but the reels can quickly grow to a much larger size simply by hitting winning combinations anywhere on the playfield.
Winning payways consist of three or more adjacent matching symbols wherever they may appear. That means the game will pay you if you have three matching symbols in a left-to-right or right-to-left position. After your win has been evaluated and your prizes paid out, the winning symbols will ‘pop’ before being replaced by two new symbols. If the reels reach their maximum size of 5×6 symbols, winning combinations will continue to pop, but only one new symbol will be added in their place.
Nudge
A nudge is a random up/down reel bump that can improve the size of your win. A nudge may move a scatter symbol that lands just out of view, for example, triggering a bonus round, or it might help you out by moving a symbol into place so that a new popping and reel expansion phase occurs.
Pixiepop Slot Bonus Features
Landing three bonus scatter symbols during the base game will award you between 5 and 7 free spins, increasing to 7-9 or 9-11 spins for four or five scatter symbols, respectively.
Free Spins
The size of the playfield at the start of each set of free spins is also tied to the number of triggering scatter symbols – a three-scatter trigger will start you off with a four-high board, whilst four or five scatters grant you a five or six-high board respectively. The reels can grow taller in this mode than during the base game, up to a maximum height of eight rows per reel.
Before your free spins session begins, the game will award you a pay-anywhere symbol chosen randomly from the high-paying character symbols. These symbols do not need to be adjacent to award a win, although you do still require at least five of them anywhere on the screen for them to count as a win. As the size of the playfield expands, the maximum possible number of pay-anywhere symbols will increase accordingly. Hitting 31 or more matching pay-anywhere symbols will instantly award you a jackpot prize of 10,000x the total bet.
The free spins mode also includes a new multiplier symbol which the paytable dubs the ‘multiplicative multiplier’ – that seems a little bit redundant to me though! A maximum of just one of these symbols can land during a single round, whilst their maximum is determined by either the number of triggering scatters or the bonus buy option selected. See below for details.
Bonus Buy
The bonus buy menu of Popwins Pixie Pop has several options, some of which have frankly outrageous price tags! The standard bonus round can be purchased for 125x the current stake and grants you 5-7 spins with a starting 1,024 pay ways, whilst the ‘plus’ mode bumps the price up to 250x in return for 7-9 spins with 3,125 pay ways – equivalent to a four-scatter trigger.
The ‘premium’ option with 9-11 spins and 7,776 starting ways also mirrors a regular scatter trigger event, this time for five bonus symbols, but the ‘max’ option does not appear to have any equivalent that can be hit via regular play. This one costs an eye-watering 1,000x the total bet but does boost the starting pay way count to 15,552 – you’ll need seriously deep pockets to try that one, though!
Pros
- Plenty of features to explore both during the base game and bonus round.
- The massive jackpot of 20,000x the total bet.
- Popwins feature makes for a fun and exciting game with plenty of big-win potential on every spin.
Cons
- Bonus buy features are relatively expensive – the priciest option cannot be activated naturally.
- Standard payouts, as shown on the paytable aren’t very impressive – you’ll need to win on many ways simultaneously to collect a big prize.
Final Thoughts
Popwins PixiePop is another solid entry into an already impressive series of high-quality online slots. With a huge jackpot and a whole bunch of features to experience, this machine has enough on offer to ensure you’ll need to play many times before you can see it all. Recommended!
