The gameplay on Primal Times takes place on a six-reel, seven-row grid with 117,649 payways, but the top three rows are covered by blocker symbols at the start of each base game spin, reducing the initial number of ways to just 4,096. The play area can be unlocked, one grid position at a time, by landing a paytable symbol with a meteor attached, which will then fly up and break the ice on the reel position above where it has landed. Wins are achieved by matching symbols on adjacent reels, from left to right, commencing on the leftmost reel, and any symbols involved in a win will explode, creating space for additional symbols to drop down from above in cascading reels style.
Multiplier Flow
Beneath each reel, a floating ice island can be seen. These can carry a multiplier value between x1 and x10, a bonus scatter symbol, or nothing. These islands move one place to the left between each spin and stay still during cascades. If the reel above their position is fully unlocked by clearing the ice blocker squares with meteor symbols, then a fully stacked wild symbol will drop down to cover that reel and either adopt the multiplier value or collect the bonus scatter symbol on the ice island directly below it. If there is more than one wild reel with a multiplier attached, then their values will be multiplied by one another, and their total value will be applied to any wins that pass through them.

Primal Times offers an enjoyable insight into an ice age world and benefits from many positive features, such as its engaging wild reel activation system, potentially lucrative multiplier mechanic, and exciting bonus round. The slightly pixilated graphic style is not to my personal taste, and I think there is room for improvement in this department in a lot of Relax’s titles, but overall, this is a great game that I’m sure plenty of people will have fun spinning away on.
