So, it looks great, and the animals are cute – but how does it pay? Let’s start with the treats that we mentioned in the opening paragraphs. The biscuits can have multipliers of 2x, 3x, or 4x, whilst the bones have maximum multipliers of 5x, 10x, 15x, and 20x. The steak is by far the most valuable treat, with possible multiplier values of 25x, 50x, 75x, 100x, 150x, or 200x. I mentioned these multipliers first because it’s worth keeping them in mind as we look at the rest of the numbers on the regular paytable. You can win 10x your current bet if you happen to line up five treats on a payline, in addition to all of their multipliers being added together and applied to that 10x as well – who knows how much such a combination could end up being worth! Then we have Pugly, who sits on a red backdrop and is worth 10x your bet for a five-of-a-kind combination. The pink and light blue pugs each have payouts of 7x for all five of their symbols, whilst the yellow and purple dogs are worth 4x for a complete payline. These payouts are obviously not fantastic when taken by themselves, but factor in the possible multipliers as well, and it’s easy to see how you could reach some very attractive wins in this game.
There is an extensive betting range starting at €0.10 and maxing out at a whopping €100.00 for each round of play. However, the intervals between each wagering option start to get very large as you approach the top end of this range.
Base Game & Modifiers
In my opinion, the regular game looks especially attractive because of the use of very large symbols and reels. Make this game full screen to enjoy it at its best! There are five reels, each consisting of four rows, so the 16 fixed paylines do end up feeling a little on the low side for this oversized playfield. As a result, I hit quite a few combinations that I expected to award a win, yet I did not.
Treat Symbols
We’ve already discussed the treat symbols a couple of times earlier in this review, but it seems important to give them a quick re-cap here as well. There are three different treat symbols: Biscuits, Bones, and Steak. Any winning combinations that include a treat on the payline will have their value multiplied by a set value which ranges between 2x and 4x for the biscuits, 5x and 20x for the bones, and 25x and 200x for the steak. Hitting three treat symbols on a single spin will award the Treat Yo’Self Feature, detailed in the next section.
Pug Life Slot Bonus Features
There are two bonus rounds included in Pug Life; the first, “Treat Yo’Self”, is awarded by hitting three or more treat symbols on a single spin, whilst “The Dawg’s Den” is a free spin-based feature which can be won by hitting three or more scatter symbols simultaneously.
Treat Yo’self Feature
During this feature, any treats that land (as well as those which triggered the feature) will become sticky for the duration of the bonus round. You start with five free re-spins, and every additional treat which lands on the reels will add one more free spin to your remaining total. Any paylines with more than one treat symbol during this feature will have their values added together before your final winnings are calculated at the end of the bonus round.
Dawg’s Den Free Spins
The number of free spins awarded by this feature is determined by the number of triggering scatters, as well as a little bit of luck. Each scatter can potentially be worth three or four free spins, so a three-scatter trigger may award between 9 and 12 spins, whilst a five-scatter trigger can potentially reward you with between 15 and 20 free spins.
During the free spins feature, no winnings will be paid until the bonus round has been completed. Any treats that land on the reels during this time will be collected, and their totals will be added above the reel set to create your final win, which will be awarded when the bonus round completes.
One additional symbol is added to the reels during free spins, represented by a toaster. This is a sticky wild symbol and can have multipliers of between 2x and 100x, making them extremely valuable – although rare.
Bonus Buy
There are four options on the bonus buy menu in Pug Life. The first two of these could well be UKGC-compliant, but I am only guessing about that one if I’m honest. These options include “Treats Featurespins”, which costs 2x the normal spin price and guarantees a minimum of one treat on the next spin, and “Bonus Featurespins”, costing 3x the regular spin price in return for a 5x higher chance of hitting one of the major bonus rounds.
The Treat Yo’Self bonus can be purchased for 100x your current stake, whilst the full Dawg’s Den Free Spins feature costs a whopping 200x – I’m not entirely sure if the latter option is worth it based on my testing, but it sure is quicker than waiting for the scatter symbols to drop!
