Raging Rhino Mighty Ways (SG Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

The original Raging Rhino online slot was a smash hit for Williams (WMS) when it was released several years ago, but the developer has seemingly gone quiet recently. It looks as if they may be opting to license their existing popular properties rather than creating new games themselves, as this is the second WMS franchise to see a release from another developer during the past three months. Today, Light & Wonder are uPGrading Raging Rhino, adding their Mighty Ways payout mechanic and a handful of other tweaks and changes. There are 4,096 pay ways initially, just like the original game, but things get crazy in this update as the playfield can potentially grow to a size of 262,144 ways when the Mighty Ways kick in fully. The RTP in regular play is 95.93%, increasing ever-so-slightly to 96% when the bonus buy facility is used.

The paytable has a whole bunch of pages which seems to imply that there are many features to discuss, but this is slightly deceiving because each page only takes up around a third of the screen. In reality, we have wild symbols on reels two through five, bonus and super bonus scatters that trigger two free spin-based bonus rounds, and an “enhanced reels” modifier, which is about the lot. It’s still a reasonable collection of features, but there aren’t as many as I had expected based on my first impressions of the paytable.

Fans of the original Raging Rhino are sure to be interested to see what Light & Wonder have done with the game, whilst new players will likely enjoy the huge number of pay ways available here. In short, then, everybody should try our free demo slot of Raging Rhino Mighty Ways!

The first Raging Rhino game was so successful that many other developers released clones of the game, usually copying the feature set verbatim and then using a different animal as the basis. One obvious example of this has to be the Buffalo Blitz games, which combined the ideas used in Raging Rhino with the popular Buffalo franchise, and even went as far as using royal symbols that look virtually identical to the ones that popular Raging Rhino’s reels. The online slots industry really does feel a bit like the Wild West at times, with developers seemingly falling over each other to copy and clone ideas as fast as possible.

We can’t expect too much from the paytable of a game that offers up to 262,144 payways, of course – you’ll need to win on a large number of payways to reach anything substantial in a game like this. Nevertheless, let’s check out the paytable anyway! The Rhino is the top symbol, of course, and even gets a special-coloured background to go along with its reward of 10x the bet for a full payline of five-of-a-kind. Next, the Gorilla is worth 5x your bet for all five of its symbols, followed by the Tiger at 2.5x, the Crocodile at 1.5x, and finally, a Bald Eagle, which will also pay 1.5x your bet for a complete payline.

The betting range runs from €0.20 per spin up to a maximum of €20.00, which is lower than the minimum bet required for the original Raging Rhino and could make this game a little more attractive for those with smaller bankrolls. The lower maximum bet is likely due to the vast number of payways.

Base Game & Modifiers

Base gameplay begins with a 6×4 playfield with 4,096 payways, but the grid will soon begin to expand as soon as you hit any winning combinations. Any winning combination will be immediately removed from the reels simultaneously as the playfield expands, allowing new symbols to drop into view, potentially causing a chain reaction of new grid expansions.

Wild Symbols

Regular wilds represented by a golden square with a tree appear in both the base game and bonus round, whilst the bonus round also includes “Guaranteed Wild” symbols as well. A multiplier of 2x or 3x will also be added to any wilds which appear during the bonus round.

The so-called “Guaranteed Wild” symbols will not disappear from the grid until they form part of a winning combination. If one of these symbols does land in view but is not part of a winning payway, it will move randomly to a new position on the grid where it is more beneficial. All wild symbols appear on reels two, three, four, and five only.

Raging Rhino Mighty Ways Slot Bonus Features

Scatter symbols appear in the form of diamonds, with the normal white variety being the most common. A “super” green diamond is also present on some reels, and if one or more of these features in a scatter trigger, your bonus round will be enhanced.

You’ll need at least three scatters of any kind to trigger a bonus round, with additional free spins being awarded when four or more scatters are part of the triggering combination. Three scatters will award just five free spins, whilst hitting all six will give you a maximum of 15 free spins.

Free Spins

The free spins part of the game is boosted by multipliers which are applied to all wild symbols that land whilst the bonus is in play. These 2x and 3x multiplier wilds can significantly increase the value of winning combinations, especially if they land whilst the grid has already reached an expanded size.

When one or more super bonus symbols form part of the triggering combination, a guaranteed wild symbol will be added to the playfield for each one. These symbols will not disappear until they have formed part of a winning combination and will reappear on the next free spin, effectively giving you a “win spins” feature.

You can re-trigger the free spins by hitting two or more scatter symbols whilst the feature is in play.

Bonus Buy

This is an interesting bit, as you have two options on the bonus buy menu: one super bonus symbol at the cost of 35x or two super bonus symbols for 120x. The first option is what I find so intriguing, as you can buy yourself some free spins for a very low cost.

I soon realised why this is; purchasing a bonus this way will almost always result in just five free spins, so it isn’t quite as big a bargain as it first appears. I would still choose to use this option for just 35x, though, but the higher-priced option feels very risky given that, once again, you will generally only receive the minimum possible number of spins.

Raging Rhino Mighty Ways Slot Review Final Thoughts

This is a cool upgrade to the original, but the Mighty Ways mechanic has never appealed to me quite as much as the Megaways feature it tries to emulate. It can be pretty difficult to grow the grid to its maximum size unless you keep hitting very large winning combinations, and even once you do, it is soon back to its original size again.

I suspect this game could pay out some enormous wins, but my results weren’t very encouraging during my testing. Of course, I may have been unlucky, and it is only a small sample size. Hopefully, your results will be better!
