The word ‘rascal’ is regarded as a mischievous or cheeky descriptive noun, as opposed to something a little more serious such as a rogue or scoundrel. That’s probably part of why I used the term as part of my handle when I was at high school calling bulletin board systems, although I doubt that I really thought too much about it at the time! Nevertheless, whenever I see the word ‘rascal’ today, I can’t help but crack a grin, so I was pleased to see Play’n’Go’s Rascal Riches land in my in-tray. This is a 243-way online slot with a 96% default RTP casino-selectable) and a maximum jackpot prize of 9,000x the player’s stake.
The tagline for this game suggests that we’re to search for the golden trashcan – that doesn’t sound like a particularly attractive proposition to me, but I guess if it’s made of solid gold, then it’s probably worth it! But where could this trashcan be? I’d suggest that the Rascal Wild may be a good place to start looking – he can appear on any spin, occupy an entire reel, and reveal up to three additional bonuses… under his trenchcoat. Ahem. Scatter symbols are present on reels one, three, and five, and you’ll need all three of those to trigger a bonus round with five free spins. I still haven’t found the golden trashcan though… perhaps we’ll discover it later in the review?

Rascal Riches Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I couldn’t find any other slots with the word ‘rascal’ in our library here at Demoslot, which surprised me, to be honest! There are certainly plenty of games with rascal-like characters in them – take the Nitropolis series by ELK Studios, for example, where I would suggest the main character from this game would feel right at home! Or how about those mischievous leprechauns from Blue Guru’s excellent Leprechaun Heist online slot? Don’t they count as being rascals? I say they do! Play’N’Go’s slots have a very different feel to those produced by ELK Studios, however – whilst Rascal Riches can certainly compare in terms of its visuals, its 9,000x jackpot falls far short of what can be won in the Nitropolis games.
Of course, the headline jackpot figure isn’t everything – you aren’t going to be winning it every day, that’s for sure! However, it’s a bigger problem when the regular line hits on a game’s paytable are also surprisingly small – the highest-paying symbol in Rascal Riches, for example, awards just 1.5x the total bet for a full payway of five of a kind! That’s tiny, even by 243-way slot standards, and things only continue to go downhill from there. The second-placed painter, banker, and police officer symbols all share equal returns of just 0.8x each, whilst the various screwdrivers, flashlights, and other tools that make up the low-paying section of the paytable can award as little as 0.33x the bet for all five symbols. These payouts are shocking, to put it bluntly, but there is a good explanation for them – the game offers many ways of boosting and multiplying the numbers shown on the paytable. Stick around, as we’ll explore each in depth in the following two sections.
A quick word on the betting range – the minimum/maximum permitted wagers have been set at €0.10 and €100.00 per spin, respectively, with a reasonable number of other bets allowed between the two extremes. Play’N’Go has also included their quick-bet selection bar, allowing you to quickly swap between five different wager amounts from one spin to the next.
Base Game & Modifiers
For the most part, Rascal Riches plays like any other typical video slot. The game uses the most common reel configuration with five columns of three rows each, and the 243-way payout mechanic is also a very popular choice in the online slots industry. You’ll need at least three matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left to score yourself a win.
Rascal Wild
Here’s where things begin to get a little bit more interesting – the rascal wild can show up on any spin and is a full reel wild symbol that substitutes for everything except the game’s scatter symbol. The Rascal Wild can also reveal up to three additional bonuses, although this isn’t guaranteed – sometimes you’ll get nothing, but occasionally he’ll be generous and give you all of the following:
- Multiplier: Adds a multiplier of 2x, 3x, or 5x to every win that occurs during the current spin. Up to three multipliers can be revealed at once, in which case their values will be added together before being applied to your win.
- Mystery Symbols: Adds two or three mystery symbols to the reels in random positions.
- Row Splitter: Splits all symbols on the row where the feature is revealed into two, creating additional pay ways. If a row splitter appears in all three possible positions, the playfield can divide into 3,888 pay ways instead of the usual 243. This dramatically increases the maximum possible win.
Rascal Riches Slot Bonus Features
Rascal Riches includes one main bonus round, a free spins feature triggered by hitting all three scatters on reels one, three, and five. When this occurs, you’ll be awarded five free spins.
Free Spins
During the free spins feature, the rascal wild is guaranteed to land on the reels during every round. He will move between reels from one spin to the next, and as he acts as a stacked wild, it is obviously better if he is located closer to the left.
Although this isn’t mentioned on the paytable, I did feel as if the Rascal Wild awarded extra features more often during the free spins feature. This could be because you see him appear much more frequently here, or perhaps I was just lucky!
Golden Trash Can
Before the final free spin is played, the golden trash can will finally make itself known and reveal a multiplier of either 20x, 30x, 50x, or 100x. This multiplier will be applied to any wins that occur on the final free spin.

- Regular paytable prizes are unbelievably small.
Final Thoughts
Rascal Riches is a fun and quirky little release, much like many other Play’N’Go online slots. It’s not perfect, as the list of cons above clearly shows, but I was genuinely surprised by just how much luck I had whilst testing the game for this review. If I’d been playing for real money, I would be significantly richer right now, so I’ll try this one as soon as it appears on general release.
