Game Overview

As a rule, there probably aren’t too many sharks that you’d want to be anywhere near in open water. But, as we all know, rules are made to be broken, and the sharks in Push Gaming’s Razor Returns online slot are much friendlier than most! So friendly, in fact, that their 40 fixed paylines and 96.55% RTP can deliver an impressive top jackpot of 100,000x the total bet – one of the largest prizes you’ll find in any slot machine, period.

How does the game achieve such monumental jackpots? First up, all five reels are packed with stacks of mystery symbols that activate a ‘Nudge & Reveal’ feature every time they land. When this occurs, all visible mystery symbols will open to reveal either paying symbols, wild sharks, or golden sharks; the next time you spin, the mystery symbols will nudge down one position, and the process will repeat. The ‘golden shark’ symbol is what you really want to see, as this activates a Money Train-like ‘Razor Reveal’ feature with instant prizes, multipliers, and a whole bunch of special modifiers. And that’s not all, as Razor Shark also includes a regular free spin-based bonus round along with ‘push bet’ and bonus buy facilities, so there’s a lot to unpack in this review!

I suspect that could be one of the biggest games of the year for Push Gaming, so be sure not to miss our free demo slot of Razor Returns – it’s available to play below.

Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Razor Returns Slot Paytable

The original Razor Shark game by Push Gaming was released in 2019 and proved a massive success for the provider. This shouldn’t come as a surprise; the game looked great with a 50,000x jackpot, so it could easily go toe-to-toe with the highest volatile slots already out there. Razor Returns utilises a larger playfield and more paylines than its predecessor, but the two games do share similar feature sets, and I suspect that fans of the original will be thoroughly impressed by what Push Gaming has achieved with this sequel. If you happen to be a big admirer of the nudge mechanic used in these slots, you might want to try out Fish ‘n’ Nudge, too, which provides similar gameplay.

The Wild Shark takes the top spot on the paytable once again, offering a payout of 12.5x the total bet for a complete payline of five of a kind. Below that sit the four coloured shark symbols, acting as Razor Returns high-paying group. The Orange Shark can award up to 7.5x the bet for all five symbols, followed by the Purple Shark at 6x, the Green Shark at 3x, and the Blue Shark at 2.5x. As for the low pays, this group includes a variety of human sea-related hardware such as Scuba Gear, a Compass, and an Anchor, all sitting eerily on the seabed, with payouts ranging between 0.8x and 1x the current stake for a full line of five. These numbers aren’t immediately impressive – you’ll need to hit several paylines at once to score a big win from the regular symbols, but the instant prize symbols discussed in the next section can be much more generous.

As for the betting range, I was disappointed to find the same arbitrary restrictions enforced here as you will find in most contemporary slot releases. The minimum/maximum limits are fine though, set at €0.10 and €100.00 per spin, respectively.

Base Game & Modifiers

Razor Returns Slot Base Game

The playfield used in Razor Returns sports an additional row over its predecessor for a total of five reels of five rows each. Push has wisely decided to double the number of paylines that span this enlarged reel set to 40, and all of the regular symbols are arranged in large stacks, which helps with hitting wins on multiple pay lines simultaneously.

Mystery Symbols + Nudge & Reveal Feature

The green seaweed mystery symbol is present on all of the reels in stacks of five and can land anywhere during both the base game and the free spins feature. Whenever a round concludes with at least one mystery symbol visible on a reel, the Nudge & Reveal feature will activate.

Nudge & Reveal causes all visible mystery symbols to open, revealing either regular symbols, wild symbols, or golden sharks. When regular symbols or wilds are revealed, the mystery symbols will be nudged down one position at the start of the next round. The Nudge & Reveal feature will then activate again, and the process will repeat until no more mystery symbols are visible on the screen.

Razor Reveal Feature

When the mystery symbols open to reveal golden sharks, you’ll be treated to a much more generous Razor Reveal feature. This bonus feels a lot like the money cart feature from the Money Train franchise, as each position that contains a golden shark will transform into one of the following:

  • Instant Prize Symbols: Awards a cash prize of 1x, 2x, 5x, 10x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x, 500x, 1000x, 2500x, or 5000x the total bet.
  • Multiplier Symbols: Multiplies the value of all visible instant prize and collector symbols by 2x, 3x, 5x, or 10x.
  • Collector Symbols: Collects together all other instant prize symbols and transforms them into an instant prize symbol of equivalent value.
  • Converter Symbols: Transforms all occurrences of a random paying symbol into additional golden shark symbols.
  • Nudge Up Symbols: Only lands when the feature is triggered during free spins and causes all mystery stacks to nudge up by one position.
  • Torpedo Symbols: These are the bonus scatter symbols that trigger the free spin bonus round.

Push Bet

This is a bonus bet option that comes at the bargain price of just 10% more per spin. In return, you’ll get increased odds of triggering a bonus round – at this price, there really is no reason to play without the push bet turned on.

Razor Returns Slot Bonus Features

Razor Returns Slot Free Spins Feature
Razor Returns slot free spins feature

Landing three or more torpedo symbols during regular play or via the razor reveal feature will trigger the free spin bonus round. Three torpedos will start the free spins with no multiplier, whilst four or five torpedos grant you either a 5x or 25x initial multiplier, respectively.

Free Spins

Before the free spins feature begins, you’ll be offered the chance to gamble your bonus round for the opportunity to increase your starting multiplier, similar to how this works in the provider’s Big Bamboo slot. This is a risky proposition, of course, but the rewards might just be worth it as it’s possible to reach a maximum starting multiplier of 100x using this feature!

When the free spins begin properly, you’ll notice that reels two and four are filled entirely with mystery symbols. As in the base game, the mystery symbols will nudge down by one position after each free spin, but this action is accompanied by a 1x increase to the current multiplier.

The bonus round can continue indefinitely as long as mystery symbols are visible on the reels – when the last mystery symbol nudges off-screen, the free spins feature will end.

Bonus Buy

The bonus buy menu of Razor Returns offers four choices.

  • 3 Torpedo Free Spins: 106x Bet
  • 4 Torpedo Free Spins: 186x Bet
  • 5 Torpedo Free Spins: 550x Bet
  • Random Free Spins: 200x Bet
  • Razor Reveal Feature: 500x Bet

Pros

  • Amazing jackpot of 100,000x the total bet
  • Unlimited free spin feature with ascending multipliers
  • All features available on the bonus buy menu

Cons

  • Some of the bonus buy options are very expensive, suggesting that they are probably very difficult to trigger naturally.

Razor Returns Slot Review Final Thoughts

I struggled to think of many negatives to list in the ‘cons’ section when writing this review, which certainly doesn’t happen very often! Razor Returns expands on the original in all the right ways, offers a humongous jackpot, and includes several fun and exciting features. You don’t want to miss this one!
