Reel Star Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
The pinks and purples aesthetic used in Reel Star makes frequent appearances in the online slots industry, most recently in AvatarUX’s excellent CritterPOP online slot. It’s a fun colour scheme that can be used in a variety of ways and with a number of different themes, making all of these slots look good whilst offering wildly different feature sets.
The highest-paying regular symbol on the paytable is a cool-looking pig – wearing shades, of course – and he will pay you 15x the current bet for a full payline of five of a kind. The crown shares piggies payout of 15x, whilst the pink gem and four-leaved clover each share a lower return of 5x the current bet for all five symbols. The “lucky” theme continues with a horseshoe and a bell, both of which will pay you 2.5x your bet for a complete payline, whilst the wild is the true star of the show with a bumper payout of 50x the current stake for all five symbols. There are no dull royal symbols included here, and the limited number of different symbols helps to ensure that the 15 paylines don’t lead to a very low frequency of winning combinations.
The betting range is typical of this developer, with a low-roller-friendly minimum of €0.10 per spin. The low end of the betting range has plenty of options available, which should suit most players, but the choices get very thin as you approach the maximum bet of €100.00 per spin.
Base Game & Modifiers
The base game of Reel Star utilises a traditional five reel, three row layout, but even a regular playfield such as this can end up feeling tiny when there are just 15 fixed paylines available on which to score a win. As usual, wins are awarded for hitting three or more matching symbols starting from the left, with larger prizes reserved for bigger combinations of four or five matching symbols.
Two special symbols are available to spice up the base game:
Star Symbol
This secondary scatter symbol awards an instant prize whenever one or more lands anywhere on the reels. A single star will pay just 1x the current stake, with larger prizes of 3x, 15x, 50x, or 250x for two, three, four, or five star symbols, respectively.
upgrade Symbol
The upgrade symbol appears adjacent to the star symbol on every reel strip. Any star symbols that are visible when a star payout is made will double the awarded prize, making it possible to land five stars and five upgrade symbols simultaneously.
Reel Star Slot Bonus Features
The main scatter symbol appears on reels two, three, and four only, and you need to hit all three simultaneously to trigger the free spin bonus round. The number of spins awarded is determined randomly at the beginning of each feature, up to a maximum of 15.
Free Spins
Before the feature begins, the game will decide on a multiplier for the current bonus round. This can be nothing or anywhere up to 5x, depending on how lucky you are that day! The game will also award between two and seven moving wild symbols at the beginning of every bonus round.
The moving wild symbols will position themselves in a new spot on the playfield at the beginning of every free spin. Note that the base game wild, scatter, and upgrade symbols do not appear on the reels during this mode, which can be a little disappointing.
Reel Star Slot Review Final Thoughts
Reel Star is fun for a while, but I can’t help but object to the removal of the special symbols during the bonus round! Taking the scatter-pay symbols out is one thing, but removing the wild symbols? Come on Relax; that’s taking things a bit far! Fortunately, the base game has enough potential to about make up for this, but I still don’t see this game being popular over the long term.
