Rex The Hunt Slot (Thunderkick) Slot Demo & Review

It feels as if Thunderkick has been quiet recently, which is a shame, as they have produced a host of fantastic games over the years, including one of my favourites – Pink Elephants 2. With that in my mind, I was excited to get to grips with the developer’s latest machine, a dinosaur hunter themed game titled Rex, The Hunt! The game offers 178 “connecting” or adjacent payways and has a maximum jackpot of 4,000x the total stake, all topped off with a slightly above industry average RTP of 96.16%.

As for the feature set, the connecting payways payout mechanic is such a rarity that it deserves a little mention here. All symbols need to appear on adjacent rows and adjacent reels to form a winning combination, drastically lowering the total number of payways and therefore increasing the value of the prizes offered on the paytable. The game also includes stacked mystery symbols and a free spins feature.

Are you a fan of Thunderkick’s output? And, more importantly, are you ready to go dinosaur hunting?! I think we can all agree that Jurassic Park was a shockingly bad idea, so I say we should stick to hunting these creatures in our free demo slot of Rex the Hunt – available to play below!

During the 1990s, there was a period that could reasonably be described as “dinosaur mania”, no doubt triggered by the hype surrounding the first Jurassic Park movie. This so-called dinosaur mania eventually died down around a year after the film was released and was never reignited despite numerous sequels doing their best to rekindle the public’s interest in all things dinosaur related. By the time online casino gaming became popular around a decade later, most of us had developed a take-it-or-leave-it attitude to the whole thing. Despite this, several dinosaur-themed games have been released over the years, including a licensed Jurassic Park slot by Microgaming, PG Soft’s Jurassic Kingdom, and Push Gaming’s Dinopolis.

The dinosaur hunter sits at the head of the paytable, but his top payout of only 10x your total stake for six of a kind is unlikely to turn many heads. Things head downhill quickly from there, too, with the T-Rex paying just 3x your bet for a full payway of six symbols. Smaller dinosaurs on the paytable include Triceratops with a return of 2.5x the bet, what looks to be a Raptor of sorts at 2.2x, and then a rather angry looking bird with a payout of 2x the current stake for a full payway. At the low end of the table, we have five standard royal symbols with six of a kind payouts ranging from 0.7x to 1.5x the total bet, along with a final surprise – the wild is positioned at the bottom of the table for some reason, despite it matching the top symbol payout of 10x your bet.

A decent range of wagers is available, starting at a minimum bet of €0.10 per round and maxing out at a plentiful €100.00 for each spin. It would be nice if Thunderkick had allowed players to select a few more intermediate bets at the lower end of the range, but that is becoming a common bugbear of mine with most developers just recently.

Base Game & Modifiers

One of the first things you will notice after loading Rex the Hunt for the first time is sure to be the unusually shaped reel set. The playfield consists of six reels, the first and last of which feature three rows each, whilst the four in the centre are slightly taller at four rows each. This would usually result in a total of 2,304 payways; however, in this case, the developer has opted for what it calls “connecting pay ways”, which are analogous to the so-called “adjacent payways” you might have seen used in a handful of other slots.

With connecting payways, winning combinations require all symbols to be located on a row and column that is adjacent to the previous symbol – the term “connecting payways” is actually a pretty good one in this case, as all of the available payways do indeed connect directly on either side of each reel position. The unusual payout mechanic drops the number of winning payways down to 178, and whilst this does make it a little more challenging to hit a winning combination, it also has the side effect of increasing the amount that each of those wins is worth.

Stacked Mystery Symbols

The “mystery symbol” is becoming an ever more frequent sight in modern slot machines, and the ones included here work just as they do in most other games. The only difference of note is that these mystery symbols always appear in a stacked configuration, making it easier to hit a large number of them simultaneously.

At the end of each spin, all mystery symbols currently visible on the reels will transform into one matching symbol chosen randomly from the paytable. If you are lucky, they can even transform into a whole bunch of wild symbols! Mystery symbol stacks appear on reels 2-5 only, so there’s no chance this feature will award a full screen of matching symbols.

Rex The Hunt Slot Bonus Features

There are just two scatter symbols in Rex the Hunt, one on the first reel and another on reel six. You’ll need to hit both of these simultaneously to trigger the main “bonus game”, as Thunderkick likes to call it, or a free spin feature in traditional slot parlance!

Free Spins

After hitting both scatter symbols, you will be whisked away to the bonus game, where 10 free spins will be waiting for you. Hitting two more scatters whilst the feature is in play will add five additional free spins to your remaining counter, and you can activate these re-triggers multiple times in a single bonus round.

In this mode, all mystery symbols which land on reels two through five will become sticky for the duration of the feature. If any mystery symbols are visible on the triggering spin, those will be automatically transferred across to the bonus reels at the beginning of the feature.

Sticky mystery symbols will transform into a single matching symbol at the end of each spin before transforming back into mystery symbols when at the start of the following one. This means that the mystery symbols will change into a different symbol on each of your free spins.

Ideally, you would like them to give you a wild towards the end of the feature when you have the maximum number of mystery symbols locked in place. During my testing of the game, this didn’t seem to happen very often, however, although I’m reasonably sure that this was nothing more than bad luck!

Rex The Hunt Slot Review Final Thoughts

This is a great-looking game, but that can be said about any of Thunderkick’s slots – we already know that these guys know how to create a well-presented machine. When it comes to the prizes available, however, the paytable lets this one down, and I struggled to see where the big win potential was hiding in Rex the Hunt.
