Rhino Rilla Rex Demo Slot (Microgaming) Slot Demo & Review

I haven’t come across Crazy Tooth Studios before but considering the fact they are publishing their games on Microgaming’s Quickfire platform, I had high hopes for their game Rhino Rilla Rex. It’s not often you come across a game with 3,125 fixed pay ways – larger playfields such as the 5×5 one used in this game often use alternative payout mechanics – so I am expecting the paytable to look fairly pedestrian at first glance. The RTP of this game is supposedly casino-selectable with a top figure of 96.2%, The maximum win is reportedly 5,000x your bet.

My first impressions Rhino Rilla Rex online slot were… quite strange. The paytable looks like it is going to be a short presentation, but once you begin moving the scrollbar you soon discover that it is many, many pages long! Spinning the reels wasn’t exactly clear either – the tall Rhino, Rilla, and Rex symbols appear to merge together in different combinations – the Team Up Reels subtitle suggested as much – but the alternate reel sets you are whisked away to when hitting these wins don’t seem to have much potential. There is a free spin-based bonus round and four “beast” prizes displayed to the left of the reel set, so I’m not giving up on the game yet.

Crazy Tooth released this game in April 2022, so if you haven’t played it yet, or you’re wondering what it’s all about, then why not fire up our free demo slot of Rhino Rilla Rex below.

Paytable For Rhino Rilla Rex Slot

I think what we have here is a game inspired by the later Jurassic Park movies – remember the T-Rex crossed with the Raptor? Well, this time around we are combining the T-Rex with a Gorilla… or a Rhino. Both would be terrifying prospects, and this theme idea is supported by the slightly futuristic feel that is clearly intended to be portrayed by the graph paper behind the “beast” prizes. It’s not ugly, but I wouldn’t say it is hugely attractive either – perhaps if you are really into Dinosaurs, you will like this?

I thought I should cast aside my doubts for the time being and dig a little deeper into the paytable but spent the next forty minutes or so trying to work out what all the dashed lines drawn on top of the game’s creatures are supposed to mean. It’s not often an online slot makes me feel like I am out of my depth, but in this game, Rhino, Rilla, and Rex all return €0.08 on a €1.00 bet… whether you hit three-of-a-kind, four-of-a-kind, or five-of-a-kind? The regular symbols all work in the same way, except they return just four cents instead of eight. The beast prizes make a little bit more sense – 5x your stake for the Rhino, 25x for the Gorilla, and 100x for the T-Rex. If you combine all the animals together into Rhino Rilla Rex, you receive 500x your stake instead. The problem is the game then spends more than ten pages of screen real-estate – these aren’t small pages mapped to a mobile phone screen – trying to explain how the various animal combinations go together.

At least setting your stake makes sense – mostly. Clicking on your current stake takes you to a separate page where you can set your bet size, but rather than use all that spare screen space to display some options for choosing how much you want to bet, the game just shows up and down controls instead. To me, this setup makes it essentially pointless to bother going off to another screen to confirm your bet size. The minimum bet is set at €0.25 whilst the maximum is €25.00 per spin.

Base Game & Modifiers

There Are A Total Of 5 Reels, 3,125 Paylines, And Players Can Win Up To 5,000x Their Bet In Microgaming's Rhino Rilla Rex Online Slot

I looked at the clock just now and realized that I’ve spent nearly two hours wrestling with this slot already, and still don’t really understand what its all about. I had to conclude at this point that there is some bad slot design going on here – it can’t just be me. I had a quick read of some other reviews of this online slot and confirmed this – Crazy Tooth have just done a bad job of implementing their ideas here.

That’s a shame, because the 5×5 playfield with 3,125 pay ways is an interesting starting point. I expected the paytable to be poor as far as payouts for five-of-a-kind, but what I found when I got there was just a confusing mess. Good luck if you try and have a read of the pages yourself! In the meantime, here is a brief overview:

Team Up Feature

Whenever at least two of the tall beast symbols land fully on screen at the same time you will trigger the Team Up feature. This takes you across to another reel set which contains prizes in multiples of the normal paytable win for each creature, multipliers, and special jewel symbols. You only get one free spin before your winnings will be multiplied by any collected multipliers, and you can expect higher winnings for better combinations of the various beast symbols – good luck understanding the paytable description of how this works, however!

Rhino Rilla Rex Slot Free Spins Feature

Land Full Stack Symbols During The Base Game To Trigger The Bonus Feature On Rhino Rilla Rex Video Slot

I was hoping that the free spin bonus round would return some normality to proceedings, but alas, this area of the game is just as opaque as everything has come so far. There are special full stack bonus symbols in addition to the regular full stack beast symbols and hitting the right combination of these will start the free spin feature.

Team Up Free Spin Feature

No matter how many times I spun the reels hoping to catch this feature, I never quite worked out how the number of free spins being awarded was established. You can win extra free spins during the feature – at least that much is clear – but the multipliers that were present in the regular Team Up feature are now restricted according to a series of complicated rules described on the paytable.

Overall, the winnings from this feature are better than the normal Team Up feature, but there were occasions when the only reason I knew which feature I had hit was due to the golden frame drawn around the reels in this mode. It’s a dire result for the first game I have seen from this studio, unfortunately.

Beast Prizes

These special prizes are apparently progressive, so could be significantly higher than the stated starting values by the time you come to win them. Each beast has a meter drawn under it which will fill up as you hit the Team Up and Team Up Free Spin features. Fill the meter and you can win 5x, 25x, 100x, or 500x your stake depending on the combination of beasts hit. It seems unlikely that anybody will have filled up the meters considerably before you play this game, given my experience with it.

Rhino Rilla Rex Slot Review Final Thoughts

What a mess! I really hate to be so harsh, but this is by far the sorriest online slot I’ve seen this year so far. If you do check this game out, it will probably be to marvel at how confusing it is – there’s little else to see here.
