Riders Of The Storm Demo Slot (Thunderkick) Slot Demo & Review

Thunderkick have perhaps taken a few liberties here, as Riders of the Storm bears more than a few similarities to the very similarly named 1971 film Riders on the Storm. With Western copyright law now extending to 70 years after the death of the owner of the original intellectual property, this name was likely chosen to circumvent paying for a license. For me personally, this 243-way slot machine triggers nostalgic memories of The Chaos Engine – a classic Bitmap Brothers game for the Amiga and Atari ST lines of computers from the 1990s. The RTP is typical of Thunderkick at a smidge over 96%, and the maximum win is a strangely exact 26,426x your stake.

Feature-wise, we’ve got a typical 5×3 layout with a free spins feature – nothing that stands out upon first glance, although Thunderkick has been kind enough to provide three different choices of free spin modes, along with a mystery option that can mix and match the very best – or very worst – possibilities of the three distinct modes you could have selected from.

Riders Of The Storm Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Paytable For Riders Of The Storm Slot

Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction that incorporates elements of futuristic technology into retro-inspired designs – it’s an interesting blend that has spawned dozens of classic movies and video games, as well a few interesting online slots. The most notable of these are of course Relax Gaming’s recent Money Train games, which have been some of the biggest revenue-spinners for online casinos over the past year or two. Before this, Yggdrasil’s Dead or Alive clone Casino Zeppelin also used the theme to great effect.

The scatter symbols pay 2x, 20x, or 200x your stake for 3, 4, or 5 scatters respectively – hitting all five then makes for a moderately exciting win, whilst the other two prizes are merely in the “better than nothing” category. As with most 243-ways games, you won’t find much to jump up and dance about on the paytable either – the wild is worth 15x your bet for a full line of five, but can also double, triple, or even quintuple any wins that they form a piece of. This is an important consideration, as a wild on every reel means you are going to win every possible combination on the screen as well, and the stacked symbols ensure that despite the relatively low picture symbol wins of 15x, 12.5x, 10x, and 8x your stake, you can still win plenty even in the base game whilst playing the Riders of the Storm video slot.

The betting range begins at €0.10, as with every other Thunderkick slot I can recall – it’s always nice to be able to low roll when you want to. The larger casinos will allow you to bet up to €100.00 per spin if you have the bankroll to finance such ludicrous ventures, though expect this to be capped lower at the smaller outfits.

Base Game & Modifiers

Play With 5 Reels, 243 Paylines, And Win Up To 26,426x Your Stake On Thunderkick's Riders Of The Storm Online Slot

The base game in the Riders of the Storm slot game is enhanced by a couple of modifiers. Without these, the game would be nothing more than a typical case of waiting for the scatters to drop every spin, and Thunderkick did right to add a little more zing to this title, as it elevates it from just another online slot, to something much more interesting. Let’s check them out:

Wild Multiplier Feature

Many games double wins which contain a wild symbol, but Riders of the Storm takes things further by adding triple wilds and 5x wilds to the party as well. If you are lucky enough to land several 5x wilds on the reels at the same time, along with some of the higher 15x or 12.5x paying picture symbols, it is possible to score a win of a few hundred times your stake from what looks like a fairly bland base game hit. It’s always a nice surprise when this happens, and I scored two such wins just whilst spinning the game as I wrote this review, so they seem to be reasonably common.

Mystery Wild Reel Feature

If you’ve ever played Thunderstruck 2 or Immortal Romance, you will be familiar with this type of feature. Unfortunately, Thunderkick’s version isn’t quite as generous as that offered by Microgaming’s classic 243-way slots – only four reels can be converted into stacked wilds in Riders of the Storm, rather than five, but then again you only need three in the right places with decent symbols in the remaining spaces to win more than a thousand times your stake.

Riders Of The Storm Slot Free Spins Feature

Choose From 3 Free Spin Features When You Trigger The Bonus Round On Riders Of The Storm Video Slot

The bonus round takes the best parts of the base games and throws them together into every spin just for a few glorious moments, when it can feel like anything is possible – even that 26,426x your stake jackpot.

After hitting three to five scatters, you will be offered three choices – 15 free spins where all wilds have the 2x multiplier, 10 free spins with all wilds bearing the 3x multiplier logo, or finally, just 6 free spins where all wilds will multiply your winning combinations by 5x. You can also choose the mystery option, which can potentially reward you with 15 free spins with the top 5x multiplier wild symbol. Sadly, in my experience, things never went that way, but this is not to say that it never happens – just that I didn’t get very lucky during the six free spin features where I chose the mystery option.

The odds of getting each combination are not published, and if you end up with just six spins with the 2x multiplier wild a few times you might opt never to go for the mystery option again. My advice is not to fall into this trap – I did score ten spins with the 5x multiplier twice, and maybe you will be even luckier if you give this feature a try.

I almost forgot – during free spins, all wild symbols work as “walking wilds”, just like in NetEnt’s Jack and the Beanstalk slot games. This makes it possible to win multiple times per spin and is effectively a retrigger. The number of additional spins you receive depends on how far from the left the wild symbol lands. You can potentially keep on winning indefinitely if wilds continue to land on the right-hand side of the screen.

Riders Of The Storm Slot Review Final Thoughts

I’ve always had a soft spot for Thunderkick’s games – I love the fact the paytables and user interfaces are always uniform, making it easy to both navigate the slots and understand what the paytable is telling you. At the same time, they often feel more generous than their paytable would suggest. The Falcon Huntress is a great example of this. As for Riders of the Storm, in my view, this is one of the hidden gems of Thunderkick’s library and definitely deserves a place on your shortlist for your next slots session.
