Game Overview
The story of Robin Hood caters perfectly to our emotions – it’s a tale of a heroic outlaw, who legends state would steal from the rich to give to the poor. A highly skilled archer and swordsman, his chief opponent was the Sheriff of Nottingham, who he battled tirelessly with his ragtag band of outlaw friends known as the merry men. It’s a tale which has been retold countless times in modern culture and is the basis for a NetEnt online slot titled Robin Hood Shifting Riches. This machine utilises 20 fixed paylines and has a 96.75% RTP alongside a top win of 5,260x the total bet.
The game includes several notable features, including the eponymous ‘shifting reels’, activated every time a winning combination forms on the playfield. Consecutive wins are boosted by an ascending multiplier which maxes out at 5x, but the shifting part can continue indefinitely as long as new winning combinations appear on the reels. There’s also a free spins feature that is triggered in an unusual way – all five reels contain money bags, and collecting four bags in a chest underneath a reel will award ten free spins. Any collected bags are stored alongside the current bet amount, meaning you can always return to the game later to continue playing with your progress intact.
Do you enjoy the legend of Robin Hood? I think it’s about time we got another movie or television series, personally! In the meantime, I guess I’ll have to make do with our free demo slot of Robin Hood Shifting Riches – it’s available to play below.
Robin Hood Shifting Riches Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I’ve reviewed several slots based on the legend of Robin Hood over the years, some of which have been fantastic fun. Take iSoftBet’s Sheriff of Nottingham 2, for example, which scored 7.9 in our review here at Demoslot. There’s also a handful of titles based around another legendary bow-wielding figure, such as William Tell and the Wild Arrows, also from iSoftBet. NetEnt has some competition in this area then, but Robin Hood Shifting Riches plays quite differently from most other online slots. Visually, I’d say that the game is only average – the symbol graphics could undoubtedly be better, although NetEnt did at least boost the resolution when they upgraded the game from Flash to HTML5 a few years back.
As you might expect, Robin Hood is the most valuable symbol on the paytable in this game, with a payout of 50x the total bet for a full payline of five of a kind. I believe his friend with the two daggers to be Will Scarlet, and he has a maximum return of 37.5x your stake for all five of his symbols. There’s a significant drop before we get to Little John and Friar Tuck, both of whom are worth just 12.5x the total bet for a complete payline, whilst one of the sheriff’s guards takes the final high-paying spot at 6.25x for a five of a kind combination. As for the low pays, five aces will get you 3.75x back in winnings, five kings or queens are worth 2.5x, and the jacks/tens are the lowest value symbols worth 1.25x each.
Shifting Riches is relatively flexible compared to modern NetEnt slots when choosing how much you wish to bet. There are ten bet levels and several coin sizes to choose from, resulting in minimum/maximum wagers of €0.20 and €100.00 per spin, respectively.
Base Game & Modifiers
The reels used in Robin Hood Shifting Riches are configured in the traditional five-by-three manner used in the majority of video slots. The playfield is spanned by 20 fixed paylines, which again is a common setup for these machines, but don’t be fooled; there’s more to this game than meets the eye!
Shifting Reels
Every line win scored whilst playing this game will activate the Shifting Reels feature. When this occurs, your current multiplier will increase by 1x up to a maximum of 5x, after which the multiplier will remain the same, but the shifting reels process will continue.
Each shift will cause the symbols in view to move to the right, allowing a new reel to ‘shift’ into view from the left. If these new symbols complete further line wins, the process will repeat indefinitely.
Robin Hood Shifting Riches Slot Bonus Features
This game does not employ traditional scatters to activate its bonus round. Instead, money bag symbols are present on all five reels. Whenever one of these lands in view, it will drop into the chest located directly below it. When a single chest accumulates four bags, the free spins feature will activate.
Note that money bags are stored for each bet level – if you change your wager, any collected bags will disappear. Don’t worry though, you can change your bet back at a later time, and the bags will still be there, even between sessions over an extended period of time.
Free Spins
The main bonus round awards ten free spins initially, but it’s possible to top up your remaining counter by hitting the new free spins symbols, which only appear during this part of the game. One free spin symbol will add two more spins to your remaining total, whilst two or three increases this to five or 10 spins, respectively.
The free spins feature also benefits from an extra wild symbol – one of the five high-paying character symbols will be chosen randomly before your feature begins, and this definitely helps as it ensures that the shifting feature will activate much more often.
Pros
- Several unusual aspects give this machine a unique feel
- Unlike games that use scatter symbols, you’re certain to win a bonus eventually.
- A 5x multiplier allows for big wins even during base gameplay.
Cons
- The graphics are average at best and appear rushed.
- Jackpot is only average by modern standards.
Final Thoughts
I’ve always enjoyed the legend of Robin Hood in movies and on television, so I was quick to give this game a try when I first saw it. It’s certainly an interesting machine that plays differently from many other slots, and whilst the payouts aren’t the highest you can find, the shifting mechanic and collection method of triggering the bonus make Shifting Riches worthy of a try at least.
