Rocket Blast Megaways (Pragmatic Play) Slot Demo & Review

For a long time, I was expecting the Megaways craze to die out, and we would be left with only a limited bunch of slots that used the mechanic. Of course, that view has been proven laughably inaccurate by now – Megaways has now become as much a part of the online slot landscape as games with regular ways or paylines. Yes, there are undoubtedly way too many Megaways games with identical feature sets, but there are now just as many slots with a Megaways suffix that offer unique and unusual experiences too. The latest addition to the seemingly endless line of Megaways machines has been created by Pragmatic Play and is named Rocket Blast Megaways. There’s the usual maximum of 117,649 ways to win, whilst the 96.01% RTP is just about bang-on average too. The maximum jackpot of 10,000x the total bet is a little better, as many other releases from this developer max out at just half of that.

Aside from the typical tumbling symbols feature that is present in almost every other Megaways game, what other features does Rocket Blast Megaways include? The most important one is the ‘Rocket Feature’ – it does feature in the title, after all – and will activate whenever a rocket symbol lands anywhere on the playfield. When that occurs, all symbols directly underneath the rocket will transform into wilds that will nudge down one position on the playfield during every subsequent spin. Four scatters are required to trigger the main bonus round, but it’s possible to hit as many as nine of these symbols under certain conditions. When using the bonus buy facility, the number of triggering symbols is determined randomly; more symbols mean more free spins, up to a maximum of 35 spins for nine scatters.

I love rockets – especially the mighty Saturn V, which took men to the moon in the late 60s and early 70s. The SpaceX Starship is pretty exciting too, even if it does look like a flying dustbin and Elon Musk’s proposals to use it to take a thousand people at a time to Mars are laughable… at best. I also love rocket-themed slots – Over the Moon Megaways wasn’t the best of the bunch, but I did very much enjoy reviewing it; if you’re looking for a more impressive space-themed machine, I’d look no further than Push Gaming’s Space Stacks – it’s definitely inspired by Jammin’ Jars, but that’s no bad thing in my view. If we ever do make it back to the lunar surface, I really hope that we’ll get a new wave of online slots to celebrate the event – I’m not holding my breath though, considering it’s already taken NASA more than a decade to build a new rocket out of old space shuttle parts.

Whilst we wait for the next inspirational quote from this century’s Neil Armstrong, let’s check out the paytable offered in Rocket Blast Megaways! The high-paying symbols all feature various coloured aliens, with the Pink Guy being the most valuable of the bunch. He’ll award you 20x your total bet for a full payway of six of a kind, significantly more than his second-placed Orange Rival, who can only muster up 5x the bet for all six symbols. The Yellow, Green, and Blue Aliens are even worse – just 2.5x, 2x, or 1.5x the bet for a complete payway of those symbols. As for the low pays, five coloured meteorites have been used for those rather than typical royal symbols, with prizes ranging between 0.5x and 1x the current stake for a six of a kind combination.

The betting range is pretty standard for a Pragmatic Play machine – minimum/maximum permitted wagers of €0.20 and €100.00 per spin, respectively, with more than enough other bets to choose from between those limits.

Base Game & Modifiers

Rocket Blast Megaways Slot Base Game
Rocket Blast Megaways slot base game

Most early Megaways titles opted to copy the six-plus-one reel configuration that Big Time Gaming first laid out in their early attempts at the format. Pragmatic Play has chosen to do away with the extra horizontal reel for this game – there are still six reels, but all of them can divide into between two and seven sections during each round resulting in minimum/maximum pay way counts of 128 and 117,649, respectively. Quite a wide range, then!

The highest-paying pink alien symbol and lowest-paying green meteorite both offer a prize for just two symbols, but everything else on the paytable needs at least three matches starting from the leftmost reel before you’ll be rewarded with a win. Wild symbols only appear on reels two through five in this release, so there’s no chance of hitting a winning payway of those, I’m afraid!

Rocket Feature

Whenever a rocket lands on the reels, all symbols directly underneath it will be transformed into wilds. The wilds added by the rocket will stay on the reels in between rounds but will move down by one position after every spin or tumble.

The paytable doesn’t mention if the rocket can appear on reels one and six – I never saw this happen, so I’m guessing it isn’t possible, considering that wilds cannot normally land on those reels.

Rocket Blast Megaways Slot Bonus Features

Rocket Blast Megaways Slot Free Spins Feature
Rocket Blast Megaways slot free spins feature

The large reel set used in this game has one unfortunate side effect – whilst most slots only require you to hit three scatter symbols to trigger a bonus round, this game asks that you land at least four of them if you want to make it to the free spins feature.

Four scatters will award 10 free spins, with five additional spins added to that count for every extra scatter, up to a maximum of 35 spins for nine scatter symbols.

Free Spins

Before the bonus round begins, you can choose to gamble the spins you have won for the chance to win additional spins. Losing even a single gamble will cause you to lose all the spins you have accumulated, so be careful when choosing how often to take advantage of this feature!

Aside from this, the free spins play out much like most other Megaways bonus rounds. There’s an ascending multiplier feature that increases by 1x every time a tumble sequence occurs, and there is no limit to how high this multiplier can become. Hitting three scatter symbols during the round will add four more free spins to your remaining counter.

Bonus Buy

The free spins feature can be triggered instantly from the base game by paying 100x the current stake. The number of scatter symbols that will land after making your purchase is determined randomly – it can be anywhere from four to nine symbols, which result in between 10 and 35 free spins, respectively.

Pros

  • 10,000x jackpot is higher than many other Pragmatic Play slots.
  • The rocket feature is a nice addition to the Megaways formula.
  • Lots of scatters on the reels give you a chance to win many more free spins than other games allow.

Cons

  • Very similar to the multitude of existing Megaways slots.
  • Only one genuinely high-paying symbol on the paytable.
  • 10,000x jackpot is adequate, but much lower than that offered by Megaways games produced by Big Time Gaming themselves and even other developers such as Blueprint.

Final Thoughts

Space is an exciting field of science, which makes it the perfect backdrop for any online slot, in my opinion. However, the background and symbols used in this machine look a little rushed – I don’t think that Pragmatic Play had their best artists working on this machine, that’s for sure. It’s a fun blast, but it’s very typical Megaways fare and nothing more.
