Provider Elk Studios recently announced the release of their Battle of Nitropolis series, consisting of four games that each focus on a different character from the story, before finally culminating in the release of Nitropolis 5. Last month, I reviewed the first of those, Gritty Kitty of Nitropolis, which was broadly similar, in gameplay terms, to previous instalments in the series. I wondered whether they’d mix things up and bring something entirely different to the table at some point, and they appear to have done just that with the second title in this mini-series. It’s called Rogue Rats of Nitropolis, and it’s a high volatility game with an RTP of 94% and a potential maximum win of 25,000x.
Elk describes this title as a 7×7 cluster pays slot. However, visually, it is not presented in that fashion whatsoever; it looks nothing like a slot, with no traditional rows and reels to be seen. Instead, we’re given a bird’s eye view of a desolate desert wasteland, and pressing spin will result in a rogue rat jumping in a vehicle and exploring that vast environment, hoping to happen across pay symbols before running out of fuel. Those symbols must match the colour of the vehicle to count, but there are also lots of feature symbols to be found. These include fuel boosts, multipliers, vehicle swaps, and coins, one of which is an instant max win variant! There are the usual two types of bonus to shoot for, the standard and super versions, both of which offer increased access to the game’s special feature symbols.
The complex gameplay featured in this title is far easier to understand by experiencing it yourself rather than reading about it, and if you’ve been looking for something completely different from conventional slot play, this could be just the game for you. Rogue Rats Of Nitropolis Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
As we enter the recommendations section of this review, I must admit I’m slightly stumped. Other than a few Print Studios slots, the gameplay featured in Rogue Rats of Nitropolis is so unique that it can’t be compared to any other titles. However, the theme has been inspired by the massively popular Nitropolis series, and if you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing those slots yet, why not start your journey by giving Nitropolis 3 a try? It’s the pick of the bunch for me. Or, if you’re familiar with the series but happened to have missed out on the recent release of Gritty Kitty of Nitropolis, which is the first in the epic Battle of Nitropolis sequence, then you’re bound to enjoy getting to grips with that. We’ve not yet scratched the surface of today’s game, so stick with me as we unpick its features further, starting over at the paytable.
There are four types of symbols to be found in the Rogue Rats desert training area, and each of those can be upgraded to a maximum of level 6, which produces their highest pay value. They are the Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green Gems, and each symbol collected will return 5x, 2x, 1.5x and 1x, respectively.
Looking at the stake options, there are 12 available to select from in total. These range from a low of €0.20 to a high of €100.00 with lots of well-placed increments in between, so everyone should be able to find a comfortable entry point here.
Rogue Rats Of Nitropolis Slot Base Game
When it comes to the game mechanics, Rogue Rats of Nitropolis takes some getting used to. You’ll begin each spin located in an empty play area and jump into a car that will be either red, yellow, blue, or green, filled with a predefined amount of fuel. This car is surrounded by a 5×5 box representing the rat’s view, whilst we see the outside of this area, up to a 7×7 box as the player.
The car will surge forward, moving the screen, and then come to a stop, with any symbols that match the car’s colour and are adjacent to it, either horizontally or vertically, being collected by the rat. Collecting matching or feature symbols will also top up the vehicle’s fuel level. It will manoeuvre around non-matching symbols or change direction, and you’ll hope to discover more matching or feature symbols as you explore further to continue the game round. The rat may also switch to a vehicle of a different colour, changing the type of symbol it collects. Maxing out the fuel meter will award the nitro fuel boost, which means that fuel is unlimited until a coin value is collected. If the fuel level reaches empty, the round will be over.
Feature Symbols
On top of standard paytable symbols, there are a whole host of different feature symbols to be found in the barren wasteland that these rogue rats call home. These are as follows:
- Nitro Multiplier: An active nitro multiplier is applied to coins and paytable symbols that match the colour of the current vehicle. A new, higher multiplier value is prepared but locked once a nitro multiplier is collected.
- NPD Radar: When the NPD radar is shot by the rogue rat’s vehicle, it will activate any locked multiplier value.
- Nitro Blob: Shooting a nitro blob will upgrade the value of all paytable symbols to the next level.
- New Vehicle: The rat will abandon its current vehicle and jump into one of a different colour.
- Nitro Fuel: Re-fills the vehicle’s fuel tank, which can be found at nitro wells or fuel depots.
- Coins: Stake multiplier values which can be found randomly on the play area or uncovered by destroying NPD cruisers, helicopters, or police HQs; comes in assorted values, including a max win coin worth 25,000x.
- Missile Silo: Increases the rat’s visible area up to 7×7, enabling it to interact with symbols and features that would normally be outside of its 5×5 view.
- Turret: Enables the rat to reach features that are further away.
Rogue Rats Of Nitropolis Slot Bonus Features
There are two different variants of the bonus round to enjoy: the standard, which is triggered by collecting two bonus symbols during one spin, and the super version, which is activated when at least one of those symbols collected is of the super variety. Each will begin with three spins and can be re-triggered by collecting two more bonus symbols during the same spin.
Standard Bonus Round
During this variation of the free spins feature, all symbol upgrades and multiplier values are held between spins.
Super Bonus Round
All symbol upgrades and multiplier values are held between spins, and each spin begins with the nitro fuel boost active, which awards unlimited fuel until a coin is collected.
X-iter
Elk Studios popular X-iter button can be found to the left of the screen and provides players with an array of bonus buy options which they can select from to fast track into the action. These include:
- Bonus Hunt: Each spin begins with one bonus symbol already collected, which makes it more than four times more likely that a bonus will be triggered on that spin. Cost – 3x.
- Nitro Rally: Increases the area visible to the rat and awards double the amount of starting fuel compared to a standard spin. Cost – 10x.
- Road Warrior: Spin will start with double the amount of fuel, and only coin symbols will be present on the screen. Cost – 25x.
- Buy Bonus: Triggers the standard bonus feature. Cost – 100x.
- Super Bonus: Triggers the super bonus feature. Cost – 500x.
Pros
- Unique, innovative gameplay.
- Maximum win coin to be found.
- Long sequence spins can be great fun.
Cons
- Initially complicated game mechanics.

Rogue Rats Of Nitropolis Slot Review Final Thoughts
Having spent countless hours spinning away on the various Nitropolis slots in the past, this most recent instalment took quite some getting used to. I was initially glad to see that Elk had decided to try something new with the series, and they must be commended for the originality of Rogue Rats; there’s nothing quite like it, to my knowledge. It has some great aspects; any spin can turn into an entertaining sequence of events, and the prospect of unearthing the max win coin is tantalising. However, I can’t get away from the fact that this is more like a computer game than a slot, and it’s not one that I’ve personally enjoyed enough to want to play again. That being said, some people will think it’s amazing, and if you've been a big fan of other CollectR slots, Pirorts and Pirots 2, I can understand why.
