Ronin’s Honour Slot (Play'n Go) Slot Demo & Review

Here’s one for the video game fans! Ronin’s Honour is a fantastic-looking new online slot from industry stalwarts Play’N’Go and boasts several unique and exciting cutscenes that are hugely reminiscent of those included in the original Ninja Gaiden Trilogy. The game uses the popular 243-ways payout mechanic and has a rather large jackpot for a Play’N’Go release at 30,000x the total bet. As with all slots published by this developer, the RTP is casino selectable – be sure to check that your favourite site offers the game at the default 96%+ RTP before beginning to play.

Another interesting aspect of Ronin’s Honour appears when you open the information pages for the first time; the slot includes ‘splitting mystery symbols’, which function similarly to the xSplit feature offered in many NoLimit City releases. The main bonus round is a three-spin feature, but certainly not a typical one – there are numerous unique aspects to this part of the game, including a ‘Hannya Free Spin’ where stacked wilds and additional pay ways are up for grabs. You’ll need to keep an eye out for the ninja, though – if he blocks your attack, Ronin will lose a life, and your free spins session may come to an abrupt end.

I was always a huge arcade gamer when I was younger, often spending my lunch money playing games such as Shinobi, Final Fight, and Street Fighter 2 at the local spa on my way home from school. As such, I’m always happy to see new online slots that stoke up nostalgic memories of playing those ancient video games as a child. We’ve seen a few earlier attempts to create a game such as this – The Legend of Musashi by Peter & Sons springs to mind – but I definitely think that Play’N’Go’s game here does things better in terms of both presentation and features. Let’s not forget that huge jackpot as well – at 30,000x the total bet, this is a great-paying online slot that should be of interest to anybody who enjoys high variance machines.

Five scatters will get you 8x your total bet – it isn’t a huge payout by any means, but it’s always nice to get something for hitting the scatter symbols nowadays! There are four comic book style weapon symbols – the red sword has a payout of 10x for a full payway of five of a kind, followed by the purple shuriken at 8x for all five symbols. Next, there’s a blue mace which pays 4x for a complete payway and a green dagger with a return of 3x. The low-paying royals have been created in a Japanese-style font, which fits well with the game’s graphical style. Finally, five aces or kings will get you 0.8x your total stake back, whilst five queens or jacks are a little less valuable at 0.6x. These payouts may not sound all that great, but keep in mind that all symbols are stacked on the reels and can potentially be divided by that xSplit-like feature so that you can win on several thousand payways simultaneously.

The betting range starts at an amazingly low €0.05 per round, but the maximum is also relatively low for a top-tier game at just €25.00 per spin. However, I can’t see this being a huge issue for too many players – I certainly don’t know anybody who regularly bets more than €10.00 a spin when playing online slots.

Base Game & Modifiers

Ronin's Honour Slot Base Game
Ronin’s Honour slot base game

After you first open Ronin’s Honour, you’re likely to expect a very typical base game. The playfield utilises the common five reel, three row layout, so you’d probably assume that the game may use 25 paylines or perhaps 243-ways. The latter is close to being the truth, but the splitting mystery symbol feature (see below) allows you to increase the number of payways up to an unspecified maximum – it’s certainly many thousand though!

Splitting Mystery Symbols

The mask symbol is a mystery symbol – at the end of each game round, all of these which are visible will simultaneously transform into matching weapons or royal symbols chosen at random from the paytable. The masks can randomly trigger the ninja wild, which is the most exciting aspect of the feature – when this occurs, the ninja will divide some or all of the positions where masks were previously located, creating many additional payways.

Ronin’s Honour Slot Bonus Features

Three or more scatter symbols landing on the reels will trigger the battle free spins mode, which can theoretically continue indefinitely. There’s no advantage as far as the bonus round is concerned to hitting more than three scatters, but you do receive a small cash premium when more than three trigger the bonus round.

Battle Free Spins

The free spins mode can last a long time when playing Ronin’s Honour, as you do not receive an initial quantity of spins. Instead, the feature continues until either Ronin or Haanya lose three lives, which only occurs if a ninja wild blocks an attack.

The battle free spins otherwise play out very similarly to the base game but have one significant advantage: the reels used in this mode include additional stacked mask symbols.

Hannya Spin Feature

If the ninja splits three stacks of wilds during the battle free spins mode, the Haanya Free Spin will be triggered for the next round. In this mode, a new Haanya wild spawns mystery demons that will transform into huge stacks of mystery wilds. Every Haanya Free Spin is also a guaranteed win!

Pros

  • Unique theme.
  • Top win of 30,000x bet.
  • Minimum stake of just €0.05.

Cons

  • Lower RTP levels might be used at some online casinos.

Final Thoughts

I love the visual styling of Ronin’s Honour, but the best part of the game has to be the battle free spins feature, where split mystery symbols seem to fall into view on almost every round! Despite the low numbers on the paytable, it’s easy to imagine how you could end up bumping into the 30,000x jackpot during a particularly lucky bonus round… when a game makes you feel like that, you’re sure to keep coming back to it for some time to come!
