Game Overview
The title ‘Royal Potato’ sounds a little bit silly at first, but dig a little bit deeper, and I suspect you’ll be just as shocked as I was! It turns out that entire books have been written regarding the regal status of the plucky potato, including a real page-turner named The History and Social Influence of the Potato by Redcliffe Salaman. I swear I’m not joking! I’m not sure if Print Studios intended for us to get that deep when they created their Royal Potato online slot, but I do know that it’s a 30-payline machine with a 96.31% RTP and a top win of 30,000x the total bet.
The royal features on offer include ‘Superspinners’, which are unique game elements positioned between the normal reels. If a winning payline happens to intersect with one or more Superspinner’s, the payout will be multiplied by the value of each one in succession. The main bonus round offers between 10 and 14 free spins with a giant golden potato symbol locked in the centre of the reels throughout. The golden potato isn’t quite wild, but it does substitute for multiple symbols that are indicated in a panel next to the reels. Scoring a win with all of the indicated symbols will cause the potato to grow, increasing the number of symbols it can substitute for. In addition, a bonus buy facility is available, priced at 93x the cost of a single spin.
It doesn’t matter whether you are a fan of the Jersey Royal or are a hardcore supporter of King Edward – our Royal Potato slot demo has no specific allegiance! Check it out below.
Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I don’t remember playing any other potato-based online slots, making Royal Potato the first of its kind! We’ve previously reviewed the tomato-themed Flaming Tomatoes, and who could forget Relax Gaming’s excellent Wild Yield online slot? Compared to those games, this vegetable-themed slot is equally well-presented but has a few advantages, such as a significantly higher maximum jackpot payout. The theme is unquestionably silly, but that’s a huge part of its charm for me! Such has been the success of this title; Print Studios have treated us to a second outing in their Royal Potato 2 slot, which you should definitely check out.
Okay, Royal Potato looks great and has a fun theme – but how does it pay? The potato King and Queen are the highest-paying symbols on the paytable with five of a kind payouts of 50x and 25x the total bet, respectively. The remaining high-paying symbols are represented by four high-quality potato varieties – the Desiree potato will award 12.5x the bet for all five symbols, followed by the Yukon at 10x, the Russet at 7.5x, and the Kennebec at 6x. You might expect a few royals at the bottom of the table, but Print has mixed things up a bit by using flowers instead; purples are worth 3x, followed by orange at 2.5x, green at 2x, and blue at 1.5x for a complete payline.
Those with smaller bankrolls will be glad to hear that the minimum permitted bet is just €0.20 per spin. At the other end of the scale, the maximum limit of €40.00 should be enough for all but the highest of high rollers. As you’d expect, there is a good selection of bets to play at between these amounts, so players of all sized budgets are well catered for.
Base Game & Modifiers
Print’s Royal Potato slot has five reels of four rows each, making it slightly larger than your average online slot. However, despite its size, the game still only offers 30 paylines – there were many occasions when I expected a certain reel layout to award a win, but it turned out that the matching symbols did not line up with any of the paylines.
Superspinners
There are 14 SuperSpinner positions between the five main reels and any payline that intersects one or more of them will be multiplied by the number(s) shown on each spinner. When a winning payline passes through two or more SuperSpinners, the total payout will be multiplied by the product of their values instead.
Royal Levy
The King and Queen symbols can randomly trigger this special feature at the start of any base game spin. When this occurs, every position showing a king or queen symbol will spin to reveal a random prize amount. The sum of these prizes will then be multiplied by the sum of all visible SuperSpinner’s.
Royal Potato Slot Bonus Features
Bonus scatter symbols appear on all five reels, and you’ll need to hit at least three of these to trigger the free spins feature. A three-scatter trigger will award 10 free spins, increasing to 12 or 14 free spins for four or five scatter symbols, respectively.
Free Spins
At the start of every set of free spins, a 1×2 jumbo potato symbol will be positioned at the top of reel three. The jumbo symbol can substitute for multiple symbols, as shown in the panel positioned to the left of the playfield.
Whenever a win occurs that uses the jumbo symbol as a substitute, the corresponding symbol shown on the panel will be highlighted. When all symbols are lit, the jumbo symbol will expand and begin substituting for other more valuable symbols. Three additional free spins will be added to your remaining total each time the jumbo symbol expands.
Bonus Buy
The free spins feature is obviously the most lucrative and exciting part of the game – if you want to skip the base game and go straight there, you may do so at the cost of 93x the normal price per spin.
I tried this feature several times whilst writing this review – many times, I struggled to cover the buy-in cost, but occasionally I managed a considerable profit. Of course, that makes the bonus buy facility a risky proposition, but one that I suspect many players will be willing to try!
Pros
- The SuperSpinners feature is an excellent addition to the game.
- A high max win of 30,000x bet.
- Very well thought out and executed theme.
Cons
- It's highly volatile, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it may put some players off.
Royal Potato Slot Review Final Thoughts
I’m not sure how realistic the 30,000x jackpot cap of Royal Potato might be, but that’s probably not a terrible thing – nobody ever wants to run into such a cap at the end of the day! If you enjoy high variance slots, I’d recommend you try this one, but I’d be cautious about playing with large bets – your bankroll could be gone quicker than the French Fries that came with your last takeaway!
