Sakura Masks (Red Tiger Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

Could you imagine coming up against the fearless Samurai in battle? I’m not the bravest at the best of times, but not only are they revered for the martial arts and combat skill they excelled at, but also because of those terrifying masks they wore beneath their helmets. Have you seen them? Although designed to protect the lower part of the face, these leather and iron-constructed masks, which were called Mempo, by the way, usually featured designs aimed at intimidating their foes. Fortunately, you will not have to go face-to-face with a Samurai to see some examples, as you’ll find a few in the Sakura Masks slot from Red Tiger Gaming, a title offering 5 reels, 3 rows, 25 paylines, a 95.74% RTP, and a decent max win of 15,138x the stake.

It’s those masks that you’ll hope to see as often as possible when spinning the reels, as the more that land, the bigger multiplier of your stake you’ll win. It’s possible to win up to 5,000x the stake from those symbols, whilst three also provide additional features. One is a stacked wild that fills the middle reel, another will reward a respin, and the third can multiply the winnings by up to 3x. They also play a big part in the free spins bonus, especially the stacked wild, which remains a permanent fixture on the middle reel.

Will this latest slot from Red Tiger Gaming prove as revered as many of the developer’s previous titles, or is the mask starting to slip? The easiest way to find out is by taking our Sakura Masks demo slot for a spin; it’s free to play below.

Sakura Masks Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Sakura Masks Slot Paytable

We’ve encountered the Samurai theme several times here at Demoslot, so Sakura Masks is not breaking any new ground in that regard, although I think this is the first slot to focus on the Mempo mask. Pragmatic Play recently released Rise of Samurai IV, which, as the Roman numerals suggest, is the 4th in the series, and whilst it’s not a bad slot game, it wasn’t one I particularly enjoyed. Play’n Go’s Ronin’s Honour is probably my favourite Samurai-themed slot, mainly because of its 30,000x max potential win and the excellent battle free spins feature.

Let’s get back on the topic of Sakura Masks and make our way over to the pays section to see what prizes are up for grabs. I can only assume the theme of this slot is focused around the Mempo mask in a cultural fashion, perhaps part of a Japanese dance, show, or event; why? Because the remaining symbols represent other cultural items. For instance, some Decorated Shoes top the pay charts with 30x the stake when five line up across a payline. A Hairpin, Hand fan, and Bracelet are the other theme-related symbols in the game, and these have top payouts of 15x, 7x, and 5x. Dropping to the small pays, the Ace and King are the first of the low-value symbols, and these are worth up to 2.5x and 1.5x, while the Queen and Jack return up to 1.2x and 1x. You’ll encounter regular Wilds, too, and while they do not carry a payout of their own, they can help create winning combos by stepping in for regular symbols.

Experiencing a new slot release such as Sakura Mask doesn’t have to be a heavy burden on the wallet, with the minimum stake to play being just €0.10, whilst those who like to high roll have the option to play up to €10 a spin.

Sakura Masks Slot Base Game & Modifiers

Sakura Masks Slot Base Game
Sakura Masks slot base game

The Sakura Masks slot uses one of the more traditional reel formats. It has five reels and three rows, giving you 20 fixed paylines to aim at. You’ll receive payouts each time three or more matching symbols land on one of those paylines, beginning on the first reel.

Masks

Three types of Sakura masks can land on the reels, a prominent part of the base game. Above the reels is a prize ladder, which tells you how much you will win when a certain number of them land anywhere in view. You’ll receive payouts between 1x and 5,000x the stake when between 3 and 10 hit the reels on the same spin. Furthermore, two masks also carry special powers – the standard mask does nothing except contribute to the ladder.

  • Respin Masks: When this mask lands on a spin, all mask symbols are held in place while all other positions undergo a respin. Essentially, you receive any combination wins before the respin and any more as a result of that spin.
  • Multiplier Masks: As its name suggests, this mask will hold a multiplier value that applies to the value already achieved on the prize ladder. These symbols can hold multipliers of 2x or 3x.

Sakura Wilds

I mentioned the regular wild previously, but there’s also a Sakura Wild present in the gameplay. Like the standard wild, it substitutes for all non-bonus related symbols but also lands fully stacked on the middle reel and counts as three separate masks.

Sakura Masks Slot Bonus Features

Sakura Masks Slot Free Spins Feature
Sakura Masks slot free spins feature

The main bonus game on the Sakura Masks slot is a free spins bonus, triggered when three or more scatter symbols land anywhere in view.

Free Spins Feature

During the free spins bonus, the Sakura Wild remains on the middle reel throughout. While you initially receive just 8 free spins, you’ll get an additional 5 each time the scatter symbol simultaneously appears on the first and fifth reels.

Bonus Buy

There are two bonus buy options on the Sakura Masks slot game. You can purchase the free spins bonus for 50x or spend 5x to guarantee at least three masks on the next spin.

Pros

  • A new twist on the scatter ladder mechanic
  • Solid 15,138x max win.

Cons

  • The low RTP may deter some players.

Sakura Masks Slot Review Final Thoughts

While the scatter ladder mechanic is nothing new, Red Tiger Gaming has at least spiced up the play with the introduction of the multiplier, stacked wild, and respin modifier symbols that further increase the winning potential. Is it enough to help it stand out from other slots offering similar? Ultimately, that will come down to what you like, but for me, this is nothing more than a middle of the road slot I won't be visiting again any time soon.
