Sands Of Eternity Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I kind of feel as if Slotmill are working their way through a “greatest hits” of sorts of online slot machine themes – the developer has tried fruit, they’ve tried pirates, now they are having a go with the timeless Egyptian theme. From Book of Ra & Book of Dead to the Cleopatra franchise or Legacy of Egypt, developers rarely seem to go wrong when creating an Egyptian-themed game. The symbols in Sands of Eternity online slot don’t look quite as well drawn as some of Slotmill’s previous efforts, although this could just be a matter of personal taste. The background music is nicely ambient and fits with the theme well.
Before looking at the paytable I braced myself for a slight feeling of disappointment; with up to 46,656 pay ways, you can be sure that the numbers are not going to be quite as impressive this time around as they have been in the past. The top symbol, a purple mask with bird-like features, returns just 3x your stake for a full pay way of six-of-a-kind… Ouch. The other two “high-paying” symbols are even worse at just 1.5x your bet for all six. But wait – you have to factor in the possibility of winning many, many times from a single combination in a game like this, and the stacked symbols on all six reels ensure that you should be able to hit thousands of pay ways simultaneously on occasion.
The minimum bet in Sands of Eternity is set at €0.20, whilst the maximum is a little bit lower than Slotmill’s previous average at €40.00 per spin. These numbers feel like they should include most online slots players; I don’t feel as if there are too many people who will be upset at not being able to bet €50.00 per spin
Base Game & Modifiers
When you begin to play Sands of Eternity you will notice immediately that the shape of the base game’s grid is highly unusual. Effectively, you have six spaces wide by three spaces tall at the beginning of each spin, but blocks are removed from the outside of the reel area at random each time you hit a win, which is how the game expands from the starting pay way setup of 729 ways to the potential maximum of 46,656.
Stone Block Modifiers
These special symbols are contained in three corners of the reel set and will activate a special feature if you are able to make them explode. The features awarded are as follows:
- Wild Scarab – Hidden in the upper-left corner, this stone block transforms into wild symbols
- Eye of Horus – In the upper-right corner, when this stone block explodes it will immediately transform any low-paying symbols which are on the screen into high-paying symbols before any further symbols are added to the reels.
- Golden Scarab – Stashed in bottom-right corner, these blocks will trigger a special mode where a giant 2×2 wild symbol is added to the reels in a random location before any further symbols drop into play.
Random Expansion
On any random spin during the base game it’s possible that the Random Expansion feature can trigger. This will remove all non special stone blocks and open up the potential win ways to 20,736.
Burst Mode Feature
For those that would like to try something completely different on Sands of Eternity, then consider playing the Burst Mode Feature. This option offers you the chance to pick a bet size and a number of spins to go with it. All gameplay is then removed and you’ll see your cash value clocking up in the middle of the screen. The ultimate question is, will your overall winnings outweigh the total bet that you staked?
Sands Of Eternity Slot Bonus Features
Each time a bonus symbol lands on the screen it will explode any adjacent stone blocks including special ones before being added to the bonus symbol meter on the left. You’ll need to hit three or more bonus symbols to score yourself some free spins, but this is made significantly easier by the presence of the meter. Hitting more than the minimum of three is difficult, however, because the feature is triggered immediately when a third symbol appears.

I didn’t have quite as much fun whilst testing Sands of Eternity as I did whilst playing Slotmill’s previous games, but I still felt as if this was a high-quality title that a lot of players would enjoy. The increased win cap is especially welcome, but it feels like it will be a lot tougher to get anywhere the maximum in this game.
