Savanna Roar Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
According to Wikipedia, a savanna (or savannah) is a mixed woodland-grassland ecosystem characterised by the trees being sufficiently widely spaced that the canopy does not close. This would contrast with a jungle, for example, where the trees are located much closer together and you would be unlikely to be able to see the sky from most locations on the ground. The kinds of animal you find in a savanna then are wildly different from those you may find in a jungle – lions, tigers, rhinos, buffalos, and elephants are all regular features of the African savanna, and, therefore, are the stars of Jelly’s Savanna Roar online slot.
As with most games that use pay ways rather than pay lines, you shouldn’t expect to see huge numbers on the paytable in Savanna Roar. The wild does not have any payout of its own, so a full pay way of wild symbols will return the same amount as the “untamed elephant”, at 8x your stake for five-of-a-kind. The elephant is by far the most profitable symbol in this game, as the second-placed tiger returns just 2x your stake for a pay way featuring all five. This then drops to 1.6x for the rhino and 0.8x for the buffalo. On the other hand, all symbols including the wild are stacked on all reels, making it possible to win on huge numbers of payways from a single paid spin.
Choosing your stake is nice and simple, as with other Jelly online slots. Click the bet button on the main screen and you will be taken away to a second page with eleven options for setting your bet per spin. In Savanna Roar online slot, the lowest possible bet is €0.25 per spin whilst the highest is €100.00 per spin.
Base Game & Modifiers
This is the first Jelly online slot that I have seen which uses pay ways rather than pay lines. It is also the first game that I have played from this developer to use a larger than average 5×4 playfield for its base gameplay. This means that there is a total of 1,024 pay ways on which you can score a win, which should give tonnes of potential for a big pay day. There are lots of base game modifiers to talk about, so let’s have a look at those:
Mystery Symbol Feature
The mystery symbol can appear anywhere on the reels on any spin. Once the reels have stopped spinning, all the visible mystery symbols will transform and reveal the same random symbol.
Rhino Stampede Feature
This modifier works in tandem with the mystery symbol, turning additional random reel positions into further mystery symbols before they transform and reveal which symbol they are concealing. If the Rhino Stampede triggers when you already have lots of mystery symbols on the screen, it’s possible for this modifier to give you a huge win if the symbol revealed is a high-paying one.
Wild Leopard Spotted Modifier
This modifier can activate at the end of any spin and will transform all the leopard symbols in view into wild symbols. During testing, I found that this modifier was triggered quite often when I only had one or two leopards on the reels, but occasionally it was magic and added a whole bunch of wilds at just the right time. This is a great feature, if it lands at the right time!
Buffalo Charge Modifier
This is a strange one as it can have wildly different results each time it is triggered. The buffalo charge gives each buffalo symbol “a chance” to spread to adjacent reel positions, but not all buffalos will spread and those that do may spread to just one adjacent symbol, or all of them. The buffalo is also the lowest-paying animal on the paytable, so I found it difficult to get excited about this modifier.
Untamed Elephant Modifier
The complete opposite of the buffalo charge is the Untamed Elephant!, which is definitely deserving of the exclamation point given to it on the games paytable. When this modifier is triggered, any elephant symbol in view has the chance to expand in size up to a maximum of a 3×3 symbol. It is possible for this to happen and not award a win if the elephant is in the wrong place, which is truly crushing, but the couple of times I saw this modifier activate both resulted in a decent sized win.
Respin Feature
You need at least six bonus symbols to trigger the feature in this game; this sounds like a lot, but the re-spin feature can help you to achieve it more easily. The re-spin feature can activate with any number of bonus symbols on the screen and will then continue to re-spin the other reel positions if further bonus symbols continue to land. Make it to six, and you will trigger the bonus round.
Savanna Roar Slot Bonus Free Spins Feature
There are four free spin “levels” in Savanna Roar, awarding different numbers of free spins depending on the number of triggering symbols. The bottom level awards the minimum ten free spins and is triggered when six bonus symbols land. Land seven or eight bonus symbols and you will be rewarded with twelve free spins; Nine, ten, or eleven bonus symbols will up this further to 15 free spins, whilst 2-20 bonus symbols will activate the maximum level four and 25 free spins.
Some of the modifiers from the base game can be triggered during the free spins feature as well. This includes the wild leopard modifier, which also has the additional benefit of a multiplier of up to 3x when it occurs during the free spin bonus round.
The regular wild symbol also gains a multiplier during this feature, and if more than one multiplier lands at the same time, they are multiplied together before being applied to the amount that has been won.
There is one additional modifier that is only present during the free spins feature, too; called the Savage Lion modifier, this will activate each time you hit five or less bonus symbols and will transform all of them into wild symbols. If you hit six or more bonus symbols during the feature, you will retrigger the free spins bonus instead.
Savanna Roar Slot Review Final Thoughts
I wasn’t sure what to make of Savanna Roar at first, but like other Jelly slots, this is one of those games that grows on you quickly the more time you spend playing it. I really appreciated the fact that the free spins feature has so many additional tweaks that make it super exciting to hit, and the huge number of modifiers during the base game means that you’ll never get bored as you wait for the scatter symbols to drop.
