Game Overview

Another day, another expanding symbol slot, but which of the game providers will we be talking about today, I wonder? Drum roll, please. Okay, perhaps there’s not quite that level of anticipation on another “book slot,” so revealing all we have Play’n Go with their Scales of Dead slot. Delving into the stats quickly, we can tell you this is a 5-reel game with 10 fixed paylines, an RTP of 96.21% and a maximum win of 10,000x bet.

Such is the saturation of these kinds of slots in the market; you could likely predict the feature set with near accuracy, but the Scales of Dead does at least throw up one little twist. Starting with the base game though, it’s business as usual, with your only real hope of a substantial win coming from a five of a kind hit. The bonus round does differ slightly however. Initially, you’ll be awarded 8 free spins for a feature trigger and a random symbol to act as your expanding symbol throughout the feature. If you hit two scatters in the bonus though, the Sandstorm Free Spins is activated, where up to 30 additional spins are awarded, and your symbol has a multiplier of up to x4 applied to it.

There we have it folks, another Egyptian-themed game for you to take a look at. You’ll soon be so well-versed in hieroglyphics and each of Egypt’s fascinating dynasties that you’ll be knocking on Zahi Hawass’s door for a job. So, why not brush up on your skills further and check out our free Scales of Dead slot demo, available to play below.

Scales Of Dead Paytable

With hundreds of “books of slots” available for players in the market, it really does surprise me that developers continue to release these games with such frequency. I guess in the case of Play’n Go, they did at least give us Book of Dead, which has gone on to be one of the most successful online slot creations of all time. They have arguably milked the franchise somewhat since, and if you’d like a taste of a few other titles they have released under this umbrella of slots, you should check out Legacy of Dead and Legacy of Egypt.

We’ll start things off as always at the paytable, and two symbols share the highest paying spot. First is the ASP, and then we have the Wild Tomb symbol, both with equal payouts of 500x bet for a five of a kind win, with the Wild also substituting for all other game symbols and acting as the scatter, too. Next comes Anubis, valued at 200x bet for a completed line of five, with the Winged Osiris and Ankh following both with payouts of 75x bet for a completed line of five. The low pays are represented by five royals, with the Ace and King both worth 15x bet for a line of five, whilst the Queen, Jack, and Ten all pay 8x for a five of a kind hit.

Play’n Go’s Scales of Dead slot has a good splattering of stake sizes for would-be players to take advantage of, with the minimum bet starting at €0.10 and the maximum price per play reaching up to €20 a spin. There are plenty of options between these values, in my opinion, to cater for both low and high rollers alike.

Scales Of Dead Slot Base Game

The Scales of Dead slot predictably is played over a reel matrix of 5×3 with 10 fixed paylines in action throughout the base game and bonus round. For a win to be awarded, you’ll need to land at least three matching symbols (two for premium symbols) starting from the leftmost reel first, with these also needing to appear on one of the 10 active ways to win.

Scales Of Dead Slot Bonus Features

Scales Of Dead Free Spins Feature

The wild scatter symbols appear on all five reels, but you’ll only need three to land for the feature to trigger and 8 free spins to be awarded. Whilst landing three or more scatters will not give you any more spins to begin the bonus, it will likely increase your chances of hitting a high-value five of a kind win.

Free Spins Feature

Before the bonus begins on the Scales of the Dead slot, you will be awarded a symbol that will act as your expanding symbol for the duration of the feature. If you received a premium value symbol, you will only need it to land on two reels for a reel expansion to take place. In the case of being awarded a royal, you’ll need at least three for the reels to expand and a win to be paid.

As for the little twist that I mentioned in the introduction, this occurs when 2 of the scatter symbols land in view. When these land in view, the Sandstorm Free Spins are activated, and the game will award a multiplier of either 2x, 3x, or 4x on your expanding symbol and then up to 30 spins to play whilst it is active. Once the additional spins run out, you’ll get back to the bonus round, and it will again be possible to trigger the Sandstorm spins.

Pros

  • A movie like soundtrack that belts out whilst you're playing.

Cons

  • It's just another variation of a very over-saturated niche of slot.
  • Variable RTPs that drop into the 80s. King Tut would be turning in his grave!

Scales Of Dead Slot Review Final Thoughts

You can't knock the build of PNGs Scales of Dead slot, but if you've played one of these games, you've played them all. I guess you could say this one differs slightly with its variation of the feature, which reminded me a bit of SG Gaming's Montezuma, but other than that, you could choose from 100s of other slots in this niche and get pretty much the same experience.
