Game Overview
The first time I spotted a Scarab beetle whilst holidaying in Spain as a child, I was completely freaked out! I have to say; I’m pretty glad that we don’t have those things here in the United Kingdom. I can’t even imagine how those living in Australia get by with all the weird and wonderful creatures they have over there! The Scarab may not have made its way to Britain just yet, but they sure do show up a lot in online slots – most recently in Triple Edge Studios’ new game Scarab Cash Megaways. The machine features the standard 117,649 Megaways, a 95.98% RTP, and a maximum jackpot of 10,000x the total bet.
All the typical staples of Megaways games are available here, such as the extra horizontal reel, varying numbers of pay ways, and a rolling reels feature that allows you to win several times per round. There’s also a game-specific jackpot feature with four prizes ranging between 15x the bet (MINI Jackpot) and 5,000x the bet (MEGA Jackpot). Finally, the main bonus round is an ascending multiplier free spins feature triggered whenever four or more scatter symbols land on the reels.
Do Scarab beetles make you jump out of your skin? I really hope I’m not the only one! Fortunately, they only appear in cartoon form on the wild symbols in this game, so our free demo slot of Scarab Cash Megaways is completely safe to play – even for me!
Scarab Cash Megaways Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Most of the games that feature the Scarab don’t include the word in their titles, but they are literally everywhere once you start checking out the wider category of Egyptian-themed slots. A rare exception to the rule is Inspired’s Scarab Fortunes Win & Spin. My personal favourites in this category include Play N Go’s Legacy of Egypt, Doom of Egypt, and the vastly more popular Book of Dead.
The paytable used in Scarab Cash Megaways is typical of Megaways slots, with a single super-high paying symbol sitting alone at the very top. In this case, it’s the Ankh symbol, worth 50x the total bet for a full payway of six of a kind. That’s way ahead of the three medium pays – the red gem is worth 7.5x for all six symbols, whilst the blue and green gems drop to just 2x each for a complete payway. We’re straight on to the royals after that, which are divided into three groups. The aces/kings will each award 1.6x the bet, followed by the queens/jacks at 1x and the tens/nines at 0.8x each.
The minimum/maximum betting limits have been set at €0.10 and €20.00 per spin, respectively, with plenty of other options available between the two extremes. This should be more than enough choice for all players who give this game a try in real money format.
Base Game & Modifiers
Scarab Cash Megaways features six main reels, as well as an additional horizontal reel that is displayed above reels two through five. The reels can divide into between two and seven segments each, creating a maximum possible total of 117,649 payways. You’ll need at least three matching symbols starting from the leftmost reel to score a win, except the highest-paying Ankh symbol, which has a small payout for two matches.
The base game does not feature any modifiers or special features as such, although the rolling reels mechanic does make standard play a little more interesting than your typical online slot. There’s also the jackpot game, although I felt it was fitting to include that in the next section instead.
Scarab Cash Megaways Slot Bonus Features
Hitting four bonus scatter symbols to spell out the word ‘CASH’ will trigger 12 free spins. Unfortunately, the jackpot pick game is a little harder to get to – you need to collect an unspecified number of wilds during a single round, and even then, there is still only a chance that it will be triggered afterwards.
Free Spins
The free spins feature offered in Scarab Cash Megaways should be immediately familiar to fans of Megaways slots, as it works identically to the one we’ve all previously seen in games such as Extra Chilli and Bonanza.
The bonus begins with a 1x multiplier, increasing by 1x every time a winning combination is removed from the reels. There is no limit to how large the multiplier can get, and you can also top up your remaining spins with five more by hitting a single scatter whilst the feature is active. That sounds easy, but unfortunately, the scatters only appear on the top horizontal reel during the free spins.
Jackpot Pick Me Game
I do wish that Triple Edge had been more specific about how you are supposed to trigger the Jackpot Pick Game! All that the paytable tells us is that the more wilds you collect during a single spin, the better the odds are that you will trigger the jackpot feature – similar to the way progressive jackpot features often work.
The jackpots offered here aren’t of the progressive variety, but they aren’t too shabby either – the MINI offers 15x the total bet, followed by the MINOR at 50x, the MAJOR at 100x, and finally, the MEGA at 5,000x the total bet.
Scarab Cash Megaways Slot Review Final Thoughts
Judged entirely on its own merits, this really isn’t a bad online slot. However, when you factor in just how many other extremely similar games already exist, it’s a bit more difficult to have a positive view of it. For many players, Scarab Cash Megaways is simply going to leave you feeling like you’ve seen it all before.
