Slingo Space Invaders (Slingo Originals) Slot Demo & Review

In the late 70s and 80s, Taito Games released some of the most iconic video games I loved playing when I was younger. These included Operational Wolf, Arkanoid, the legendary Bubble Bobble, and Space Invaders. It’s the latter that has caught our attention as provider Slingo Originals continues down the route of creating licensed games mixed in with their Slingo mechanic. So, today, we have Slingo Space Invaders, a 5-reel hybrid bingo slot game with 12 paylines, an RTP of 94.02% and a maximum win of 500x bet.

The overall gameplay follows the standard Slingo format, where numbers that roll in on the lower reel and match on your card are marked off, with the aim being to complete as many lines as possible. UFOs can appear above the playfield, and if these are shot down via the cannon, which can potentially roll in on the number reel, you can win more extra lives or an instant cash prize. Your overall goal, however, is to reach at least four Slingos high, which you can exchange for the bonus feature. When activated, you’ll watch your ship try to shoot as many aliens as possible, all carrying a multiplier value.

Space Invaders rightfully has its place in the video game Hall of Fame, and even with its retro graphics and basic gameplay, it remains popular to this day. If you’re an absolute diehard fan of this instantly recognisable game, then you might want to try out this latest adaptation of it in our free Slingo Space Invaders slot game, which is available to play below.

I can remember years ago, my Uncle owned a cafe on the seafront where we lived, and in the corner was Space Invaders, which was 10p a play at the time. Who would have thought all those years ago I’d later be referencing the machine I spent hours on in a review of a video slot version that can be played on the internet. I actually Googled how much they are to buy now, and you’re looking at anything north of £2,500 for the old retro cabinet, but it is worth every penny, no doubt. I had to have a good think of any other games we have on our platform with the same theme, and I suddenly remembered Inspired Gaming released both a Space Invaders slot and Space Invaders Roulette, which are both worth having a look at just to see how the theme was used if nothing else.

There isn’t really a great deal to report regarding the paytable on Slingo Space Invaders, as there are just three main symbols that carry a multiplier award. These are the Octopus at 0.1x, a Crab at 0.2x, and finally the Squid at 0.4x. These values seem particularly low, but as we will discover later, these can be increased in the bonus game the higher up the Slingo ladder you exchange.

It’s onto the bet selection next, and you choose to play from a minimum of €0.10 a game up to a maximum of €100. This initial price to play will buy you 12 spins of the number reel. Whilst this may seem like great value if you pick a higher stake to play at, remember that you can purchase extra spins after the initial 12 have ended, and the further into the game you progress, the more expensive the spins cost to buy.

Slingo Space Invaders Gameplay

We did see a bit of a change in reel format on the last title we reviewed from Slingo Originals, which was their Slingo’s Cosmic Clusters game, but they have reverted to the classic set-up on Slingo Space Invaders with a 5×5 bingo-style card in play with a rolling reel below it that spins in different numbers each time you press start.

The name of the game is to mark off as many numbers as possible within the playfield, with each line or (Slingo) that you complete moving you one position further up the ladder. As mentioned in the previous section, once your initial 12 spins have ended, you can buy additional spins one at a time. There are also some special symbols that can appear on the number reel to help you out and UFOs that fly above the reels that you can shoot down, so let’s find out more about them.

Special Symbols

The following symbols can appear on the number reel.

  • Wild: Allows you to mark off any number in the column above it
  • Super Wild: Will allow you to mark off any number within the playfield.
  • Cannon Symbols: Appears in the base game and the bonus round and will fire a beam.

Ufos

Two types of UFOs can fly above the playfield in Slingo Space Invaders.

  • Red UFO: Can appear in the bonus round and base game after players have achieved four or more Slingos. When shot down in the base game, Red UFOs add one bonus life to the meter. Players can win a maximum of 3 bonus lives from the Red UFOs and 5 from the Slingo win meter.
  • Gold UFO: Can appear in the bonus round and base game after a player has achieved one Slingo or more. If shot down when 1 – 3 Slingos are completed, it will award 1x. If 4 -12 Slingos are complete, it will award 1x, 3x, or 5x. All cash awards are immediately added to the dashpot.

Slingo Space Invaders Slot Bonus Features

The Space Invaders Bonus Game is represented on the Slingo Ladder by an icon showing three invaders. Different bonus game multipliers will be applied to the aliens in the bonus round depending on how far up the ladder you were when you exchanged. These range from 1x up to a maximum of 50x.

Space Invaders Bonus Game

Once the bonus begins, Invaders will enter from the top left of the screen and travel down towards the bottom right. The Invaders will travel down this path at a rate of 1 – 5 steps per spin. The five reel positions at the bottom can now spin in cannons whilst the Invaders are moving down. It’s possible that either blank positions will land or single, double and treble cannons, which will fire single, double, or triple shots at the approaching Invaders, respectively.

Players will lose a life if an Invader reaches the bottom of the path without being shot. Additionally, Bunkers can now appear, which in the actual video game helps to protect you, but in Slingo Space Invaders, they hinder you and block you from firing at the Invaders. Both UFOs can also appear, with the Gold UFOs increasing in value with multipliers of up to 10x up for grabs. The bonus will end when all lives are lost, and the winnings will be added to your final total for the round.

Pros

  • A much-loved game that has been reworked well to fit into the Slingo genre.

Cons

  • Perhaps a higher max win could have been assigned to this game.
  • Low RTP at 94.02%.

Slingo Space Invaders Slot Review Final Thoughts

It's been great to see Slingo Originals work with licensed TV series and games, and Slingo Space Invaders is a fantastic addition to their fast-growing portfolio. There are a couple of letdowns though. If you struggle to hit the remaining numbers and it costs you more than 200x to complete a full house, it seems quite difficult to win your money back, let alone make a profit. Then, if you mix that in with the 94.02% RTP, it definitely knocks a couple of points off the score. It's a shame, as the Return to Player Percentage can be forgiven to a certain extent as 94% is still okay, but I just can't see how you make any decent profit playing this game unless you hit a full house nearly straight away.
