Spark Of Genius (Play'n Go) Slot Demo & Review

What would you say was the greatest invention of all time? Would it be the wheel, the printing press, penicillium, telephones, the internal combustion engine, or perhaps even the internet? All of those have shaped the world, but I’ve left out one that is arguably as important as any of those and that is the harnessing of electricity. It is taken for granted these days, but could you imagine a world with electricity? You can forget television, the internet, Netflix, mobile phones, and video games; those are just luxuries as we wouldn’t even have light bulbs to light our homes at night. However, the biggest impact is that we’d not have any buzzing slot games to play, such as Play’n Go’s Spark of Genius, a 6×6 slot with a 96.30% RTP and an electrifying 10,000x max win.

The backstory for this latest Play’n Go title involves two scientists competing for a contract to power the city of Paris using their own kind of electrical power. Each type of power has benefits you’ll unlock when completing closed circuits on the reels. Landing a chain reaction of cascades could unlock modifiers such as symbol removals and transformations or a free spin with multipliers.

If you’re buzzing to find out more about Play’n Go’s latest slot release, I doubt it will prove a shock to learn that we have the free to play Spark of Genius demo slot below. Take it for a few spins to see what you think.

Surprisingly, electricity has been the theme of quite a few good slots over the years. One that instantly springs to mind is our Danger High Voltage free demo from Big Time Gaming, a slot I still play regularly today. It offers 4,096 ways to win, a 15,746x max win, and the choice of two free spins bonus games. Other recommendations include Microgaming’s Electric Avenue slot, Power and the Book of Power slot from Relax Gaming.

In this section, I usually explain the symbol payouts, but Spark of Genius does not use traditional symbols. Instead, you’ll win payouts depending on how many symbols create a closed circuit. You need a minimum of four, which pays 0.3x the stake, and each additional symbol increases your winnings up to a maximum of 300x for 25 or more.

The staking options are pretty much what you’d expect from a Play’n Go title, with the minimum price to play starting from as low as €0.10, whilst the most you can bet is €100.00 per spin. Players can scroll through the betting options courtesy of the slider at the bottom of the reels, where various options between the min/max range are available to choose from.

One of the biggest talking points about the Spark of Genius slot game is the mechanics used to determine payouts. Players are greeted with a 6-reel and 6-row grid, but there are no standard payout symbols you’ll find on regular slots. Instead, there are circuit symbols which only pay if at least four create a closed circuit. All symbols involved in the winning combinations disappear so that new circuit parts can drop into place to potentially create new winning combinations.

Chosen randomly between each spin, one of two types of energy is in play for the duration of a spin. There is Manifest Energy, controlled by Maynard Woodrow, to the left of the reels, and Resonant Energy, controlled by Tess Jacova, to the right. Above the reels is a meter that triggers modifiers for either once certain milestones are reached during a spin.

Manifest Energy Modifiers

  • Relay: Once 15 winning circuits are collected during a spin, this modifier will remove between 7 and 11 symbols from the reels.
  • Overload: If 25 winning circuits are collected, between 2 and 6 destroy symbols are added to the reels. These explode and remove all adjacent symbols.
  • Empire Energy Spin: Collect 35, and you’ll receive an Empire Energy Spin. A 2×2 symbol with a 3x multiplier is placed in the middle of the grid. Each time a closed circuit lands and connects to the symbol, that multiplier value increases by 1x up to a maximum of 20x. All future wins during the spin have the current multiplier value applied. In the event no wins occur during the spin, the Relay and Overload modifiers play out one after another.

Resonant Energy Modifiers

  • Gyrota: Once 15 winning circuits are collected during a spin, this modifier will randomly rotate between 7 and 11 circuit symbols.
  • Dynamo: If 25 winning circuits are collected, between 2 and 6 special symbols with four connection points are added to the reels.
  • Free Energy Spin: Collect 35, and you’ll receive a Free Energy Spin. Each consecutive winning combination will increase a win multiplier through 1x, 4x, 8x, 12x, 16x, and 20x. That value will apply to all wins created during the spin. If a non-winning cascade occurs, the Gyrota and Dynamo modifiers trigger separately.

Pros

  • A unique payout mechanic involving electrical circuits.
  • High-quality graphics and animations.

Cons

  • No bonus game to aim for.

Spark Of Genius Slot Review Final Thoughts

I always like to give kudos to any slot developers who come up with new mechanics, so Play’n Go earns points in that regard. However, despite the electrical circuit symbol concept, the Spark of Genius slot felt flat to me. It's all about landing cascades to unlock modifiers and perhaps a single lucrative free spin. It does look great, though, and I’m sure some of you will enjoy Spark of Genius, but my general feeling was one of being underwhelmed. I would just add that if you're a big fan of these collection style games, you might also want to try out our Reactoonz 2 free play slot, which Play'n Go also developed.
