It looks like the craze could be about to make its way to the world of online slots next, and it starts with Stakelogic’s latest game, Spartans vs Zombies. The funny thing is, I imagine that if the Spartans ever did encounter a field full of zombies, they probably wouldn’t be all that surprised! After all, it was foretold (sort of) in the holy books, wasn’t it? Hmm, moving swiftly along! The game offers 25 fixed paylines, a 96.24% RTP, and a maximum win of 10,000x bet.
The base game features a zombie meter and a spartan meter, both of which can be filled by collecting the corresponding special symbols as you play. These meters provide an easy method of triggering the zombie or spartan free spins, but it’s not the fastest method – that’s what the scatter symbols are there for! Actually, strike that – the bonus buy facility has to be the absolute fastest method, but doing things that way will also cost you up to 200x the normal price per spin.

Spartans Vs Zombies Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I’ve been craving more zombie-themed entertainment for months now, ever since the final episode of The Walking Dead aired late last year! To be fair, slot developers have been doing a fairly good job in this regard – AvatarUX’s Zombie APOPalypse was excellent, and Hacksaw Gaming’s Rotten was fantastic! In comparison to those games, Spartans vs Zombies looks decidedly… tame, if I’m honest! The zombies only show up on a couple of symbols, and the game’s overall feel is much more ‘spartan’ than ‘zombie’, in my opinion. So whilst the game does look good, this probably isn’t the slot to go for if you’re looking for a full-on horror-inspired machine.
So far, then, the graphics of Spartans vs Zombies haven’t really grabbed me – perhaps the paytable will fare better? The Spartan and the Zombie share the top spot here, both of which have a return of 15x the total bet for a full payline of five of a kind. A Roman-style building takes the second-place spot with a 10x payout for all five symbols, followed by the helm and spears that share returns of 5.5x the total bet for a complete payline. As for the low pays, the payouts for these range between 1.5x the bet for five tens up to 4x the bet for five aces. All symbols appear in stacks on the reels, which should make it a little easier to win on several paylines simultaneously.
Unfortunately, the issues continue when looking at the available betting range. The minimum/maximum bets of €0.20 and €100.00, respectively, are fine, but with just six intermediate stakes between the two extremes, it seems inevitable that many players will be forced to bet more or less than they would like to.
Base Game & Modifiers
The standard gameplay of Spartans vs Zombies utilises a traditional 5×3 video slot layout, spanned by 25 fixed paylines. All of the symbols require at least three matches starting from the leftmost reel to award a win. There aren’t really any base game features to speak of but do keep an eye out for the highest-paying zombie and spartan symbols, as each one of these that lands on the reels will help you to fill the corresponding meters, which will eventually award a set of free spins.
Super Stake Bonus Bet
If it’s taking longer than you would like to trigger the free spins, why not activate the super stake bonus bet? This will double the price of each spin, and in return, you’ll have dramatically increased odds of triggering the bonus round.
Spartans Vs Zombies Slot Bonus Features
There are several ways to access the bonus rounds in Spartans vs Zombies – you can trigger them via the scatter symbols, fill the meters during the base game, or simply use the bonus buy facility if your bankroll permits.
The latter two methods will always trigger the corresponding bonus round, but triggering the feature via the scatter symbols will award the VS Battle Bonus first, where the zombies and Spartans will fight to determine which feature you will receive.
Free Spartan Free Spins
Before this feature begins, you will be asked to choose two shields. Each shield hides some additional free spins or a multiplier increase that will be applied to all the wins scored during the bonus round.
The Spartan Free Spins also include a wild reels modifier that can activate randomly at the start of each spin. When this occurs, up to three reels will be transformed into full stacks of wilds for the current free spin.
One additional free spin is awarded for every scatter symbol that lands whilst the feature is active.
Zombie Free Spins
The Zombie Free Spins have a major advantage over the Spartan spins – this is a sticky wilds feature! Before every free spin, there is a chance for one or two symbols to transform into sticky wilds, which will then remain in place for the remainder of the bonus round. Whenever two sticky wilds are added simultaneously, the second one is also given a multiplier between 2x and 10x.
One additional free spin is awarded for every scatter symbol that lands whilst the feature is active.
Bonus Buy
The bonus buy menu offers two choices; the Spartan free spins can be purchased for 100x the normal cost per spin, whilst the Zombie spins are more expensive at 200x. This gives us a clear indication that the zombie spins are the more valuable of the pair, which probably explains why I can’t seem to trigger them for love nor money via the VS Battle Bonus!
Speaking of the VS Battle Bonus, you can also purchase that here for 150x the normal price per spin, but I don’t think I would go for that one personally – if you are going to spend 150x anyway, you might as well pay the extra 50x for the zombie spins and be done with it!
Spartans Vs Zombies Slot Review Final Thoughts
For most of the time I was writing this review, I hadn’t been impressed with Spartans vs Zombies, but the longer I spent playing the game, the more it grew on me. It certainly isn’t perfect, but the zombie free spins are just about enough to convince me to recommend this one to you – it definitely isn’t the best release by Stakelogic though.
