Spring Heeled Jack (Blue Guru Games) Slot Demo & Review

The streets of Victorian London must have been a terrifying place, and at no time was this more true than during the reign of the infamous serial killer, Jack the Ripper. Jack terrorised the women of the Whitechapel area of the city in 1888, and despite his story being nigh on legendary today, Blue Guru Games and their title Spring Heeled Jack is one of the few online slots based on the tale. It’s a definitively adult theme, but then again, gambling is an adults-only activity, so why not? The game features 243 pay ways, has a 95.98% RTP, and the biggest win recorded from 100 billion simulated rounds was 15,587x.

The numbers look good, but how about the features? The game includes a mystery symbol feature, a common sight in today’s slots, but Spring Heeled Jack takes things further by also including mystery multipliers. Every symbol on the reels has a mystery multiplier of up to 5x applied to it after stopping, which are multiplied together whenever more than one appears as part of a winning pay way. The free games include stacked mystery symbols as well as bigger multipliers, and there is a bonus buy facility available as well.

If, like me, you crave some slots which feature a darker tone than the sweets and fruits which are seemingly favoured by the developers, then boy, do I have a game for you. Give our free demo slot of Spring Heeled Jack a try – available below.

Paytable For The Spring Heeled Jack Slot
Spring Heeled Jack Slot

Let’s go back to Jack for a moment or two; Jack the Ripper was a serial killer that was active in London, England, around 1888. The killer has never been identified, and there are conflicting opinions regarding his responsibility for several copycat killings that occurred in the years that followed. Jack’s killings were characterized by gruesome bodily mutilations including frequent removal of internal organs; these procedures were carried out with sufficient skill to convince the Metropolitan Police’s Elite Scotland Yard unit that the killer must have had at least basic surgical and/or anatomical knowledge or experience. Having watched recent documentaries that compile everything which is known about Jack’s crimes, several candidates emerge as likely suspects, however, all of the evidence known to exist is circumstantial at best. Modern methods such as DNA profiling have made it much more difficult for serial killers to remain undetected today, which has undoubtedly contributed to a continued fascination amongst both the public and law enforcement with respect to cases such as this one and the American Zodiac Killer, who has also never been identified despite decades of research and investigation.

As fascinating as the story might be, it’s time to get back on topic again now; be sure to check out the Wikipedia link we have included in the previous paragraph if you are interested in finding out more about the so-called “Spring Heeled Jack”. The paytable isn’t very impressive at first glance, I should warn you – the highest-paying is an evil-looking character wearing a bowler hat that is probably intended to represent Jack himself. Hitting a full pay way of Jack’s symbols will only get you 2x your current bet, but keep in mind that every symbol includes a multiplier as well as appearing stacked on the reels. A police officer takes the second-placed spot with a return of 1.5x for all five of his symbols, followed by, I suspect, a detective and a potential victim, both of whom pay 1x for a complete pay way. The multipliers given to each symbol can easily turn these 2x payouts into 100x or more, so they really don’t mean much.

As for the betting range, hit the large space to the left of the plus/minus buttons and a separate screen will open allowing you to pick from several pre-defined wagers if you wish. The lowest bet permitted per round is €0.20, whilst the maximum of €40.00 feels like plenty and should mean you can win well in excess of €600,000 playing this game at max bet.

Base Game & Modifiers

Win Up To 15,587x Your Bet In The Spring Heeled Jack Online Slot From Provider Blue Guru Games
Spring Heeled Jack slot base game

Spring Heeled Jack uses a typical 5×3 playfield, along with the ever-popular 243-way payout mechanic, which allows you to score a win by hitting three or more matching symbols anywhere on adjacent reels starting from the left. This makes it much easier to hit something but does lower the typical value of winning combinations. As we have already explained in the previous section, however, there is much more to the payouts awarded by this game than just the numbers on the paytable:

Mystery Symbols

First up, every spin can include up to three mystery symbols which always appear as full stacks on the second, third, and fourth reels only. Mystery symbols in this game will always transform into the same symbols as those shown on the reel preceding them, meaning that any spin featuring three full stacks is guaranteed to result in four-of-a-kind along the top, middle, and bottom rows.

Mystery Multipliers

We’ve seen lots of games featuring mystery symbols (although the way they work in this game is arguably more advantageous to the player than the more typical random symbol mechanic), but this is the first time I can recall seeing an online slot featuring mystery multipliers.

Once the reels have stopped spinning, a multiplier of 2x, 3x, or 5x will be added to every symbol on the screen. During the bonus round, a 10x multiplier will also make an appearance occasionally, dramatically increasing the potential final value of each winning pay way.

When more than one multiplier is included as part of a winning payway, the multipliers will be multiplied together – a 2x multiplier on all five reels, for example, would result in a 32x multiplier being applied to that pay way.

Spring Heeled Jack Slot Bonus Features

If Three Or More Scatter Symbols Land In View Then The Free Spins Feature Will Be Triggered On The Spring Heeled Jack Video Slot
Spring Heeled Jack slot free spins feature

The scatter symbol features Jack standing in the shadows of the Big Ben clock tower outside the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. Hit three of these, and the game will award you 10 free spins, increasing to 12 or 15 free spins for four or five scatter symbols, respectively.

Jumping Jack Free Spins

This bonus round is so named because of an additional feature which is active on every free spin; after the reels stop spinning, Jack will jump from symbol to symbol, starting from the left, copying the highest-paying multiplier from any symbol that forms part of a winning payway.

The mystery symbol feature will also occur much more frequently during this mode; I had several spins while I was testing the game featuring three full stacks during the bonus round, resulting in some very high multipliers – and therefore winnings – appearing on screen.

Bonus Buy

Spring Heeled Jack’s biggest surprise must be the low cost of the bonus buy facility! At just 50x the normal price per spin, this feels like a total bargain to me – you will be awarded 10, 12, or 15 free spins depending on the number of triggering scatters that land after purchasing the bonus.

While testing the game, I had one four-scatter trigger, suggesting that those may not be especially rare. Sadly, every other feature was a three-scatter bonus, but I did have some great payouts from this feature and didn’t remember ever losing more than half the cost of purchasing the feature.

Spring Heeled Jack Slot Review Final Thoughts

It’s great to see a developer embracing a darker theme for their online slot. Spring Heeled Jack looks excellent, the graphical style suits the period represented on the reels, and the highest recorded payout of nearly 16,000x should be enough to tempt players to try this game. I’d definitely recommend trying this one – I loved it!
