When I think of Red Tiger Gaming, I think of a safe and steady slot development company that rarely produces a flop. Steam Squad Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I’m sure most of you could name several steampunk-themed slots; I know I certainly can. It is a theme increasingly used for slots, especially after the award-winning success of Relax Gaming’s Money Train, with Quickspin using it for Cash Truck, Yggdrasil jumping on the bandwagon with Cazino Zeppelin Reloaded, and Pragmatic Play getting in on the action with the release of Cash Elevator. It would appear then that Steam Squad has to prove pretty awesome to be regarded as good as some of those titles, but hey, Red Tiger seem ready to give it a shot, so let’s find what it’s all about.
I’ll get into the many modifiers, mechanics, and bonus features shortly, but for now, let’s see what the symbol payouts are on the Steam Squad slot. The four main character symbols bring the best rewards, with the Old Guy, who looks like Santa, awarding 25x the stake if 20 or more appear on the reels. He is followed by a Woman, a Man Wearing a Gas Mask, and a Dog, with payouts of 20x, 15x, and 12x, respectively. Gems represent the lower pays on the reels, with the Yellow Gem paying 10x, whilst the Red and Green Gems return 7.5x, and finally, the Blue and Purple Gems pay 5x.
Over to the bet selection, and the smallest stake permitted is €0.20, whilst the maximum you can play for is €20.00. The spread of options between these values is reasonable, and players of all budgets shouldn’t have a problem finding an amount to spin at relative to their current bankroll when entering the slot game.
Steam Squad Slot Base Game
Steam Squad delivers interesting mechanics and modifiers during the base game and the free spins bonus. Wipeouts, Amplifiers, Power Ups, and Booster Rows can occur in either game mode. You need 10 or matching symbols to land in any position on the 6×6 reel matrix to create winning combinations, and as this is a scatter pays slot, there’s no need to worry about the position of the symbols or about payline.
Winning Wipeouts
Long-time slots fans will probably know about the cascading reels mechanics used on many modern titles. However, Winning Wipepots do close to the opposite. Instead of removing winning symbols after a win, the Wipeouts remove all other symbols except free spin bonus scatter symbols. The winning symbols drop to the bottom of the reels, and new symbols fall in from above to fill up all the vacated positions. The process repeats if the original win is improved or another symbol combination is created.
Amplifiers
Looking above the reels, you’ll see random multipliers above each reel ranging between 2x and 100x. If an entire reel is filled with winning symbols, the multiplier above that reel is applied to the combination win. Furthermore, if multiple reels are filled and contribute to the win, the multipliers are added up before being applied to the winning total.
Power Ups
Triggered randomly after a winning combination, one of the winning symbols can Power Up. The symbol is cloned across the entire reel, enhancing the payout you receive from the winning combination.
Booster Row
Another random reel modifier is the Booster Row. You may notice a metal frame on one of the rows on any given spin. If the spin results in that row filling up with winning symbols, it will trigger at the end of the spin when no more wipeouts can occur. The Booster will either add an extra symbol to the winning combination, starting another Wipeout, or increase the win multiplier above the reels by +1, +2, +3, +4, or +5.
Steam Squad Slot Bonus Features
All the modifiers carry over into a main bonus, triggered when 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatter symbols land in view, awarding 8, 10, 12, or 15 free spins, respectively.
Free Spins
During this bonus, the Booster Row modifier is active on every spin and will move between rows. Furthermore, every time there is an entire reel of winning symbols, each of the multipliers above the reels will increase by 1x. Those multipliers do not reset between spins. Lastly, you can trigger an additional 3, 5, 7, or 10 free spins whenever 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatter symbols appear anywhere in view.

As you'd expect from Red Tiger Gaming, the slot looks and functions fantastic. You get animatic intros, cutscenes, and fantastic visuals throughout, which leads you to think the slot will be amazing. Unfortunately, despite all the bluster, what's underneath doesn't quite cut it. This is just my opinion, so why not try out the Steam Squad demo slot to see if you agree or not?
