Stepping Diamonds (Play'n Go) Slot Demo & Review

I might be alone here, but you know what I think we need? How about a classic-themed slot featuring juicy fruit symbols and diamonds, as it’s been at least a few days since the last one was released? Yes, I’m joking, but we do have an abundance of them already, so I’m not sure why Play’n Go has used the theme once again for its latest release, Stepping Diamonds. Fear not, however, if you’re not a fan of classic slots, as this one isn’t quite as basic as most in that niche and has some interesting features, a main bonus game, and even four fixed jackpots. As for its main stats, Stepping Diamonds is a 5×3 slot with 20 paylines, a 96.20% RTP, and a 4,000x the stake maximum win.

Of those features, there’s a Step ‘N Win mechanic that can apply a 1 to 5x multiplier to Diamond Cash symbols worth up to 35x the stake, and there is a free spins bonus, which is a Hold & Win style game with 3 resetable re-spins. That bonus takes place on a different reel configuration, depending on how many scatter symbols triggered it. You can play with a 5×3, 5×4, or 5×5 matrix, and the idea is to land cash symbols or even fixed jackpots of up to 500x the stake. Plus, those jackpots can even be upgraded to a maximum of 1,500x.

You’ll find all you need to know about those features and everything else about this slot in the review below. However, you can play the free Stepping Diamonds slot demo below if you want to jump straight into the game.

If classic or retro-themed slots are what you prefer playing, then as alluded to in the intro, you’re hardly short of options. One developer that likes to create slots in this genre is Synot Games, and some of their better classic slots include Fruity Lux, Chilli Joker, and Firebird 81. BF Games is another, with its Burning Slots range a popular choice with gamers.

Moving on in this review of Stepping Diamonds, the next port of call is to check out the slot’s paytable. The Wild Symbol, which also substitutes for all regular symbols, shares the top spot with the Red Seven regarding payouts, and both return 50x the stake for a five-symbol combination. Next up is the Bar symbol, which pays up to 40x, followed by the Bell and Horseshoe with returns of 30x and 25x, respectively. As for the low pays, these are the Plums and oranges, which pay up to 5x and the Lemons and Cherries, which both return a maximum of 4x

We’ll wrap up this section with the staking options on Stepping Diamonds, where players can opt to spin from a minimum of €0.10 up to a maximum of €50. Play’n Go usually sets their upper limits at €100, but I don’t see too many players complaining that €50 isn’t high enough to stake to bet at.

Stepping Diamonds slot base game

It isn’t only the theme common on Stepping Diamonds, as the reel configuration is the same 5×3 matrix you’ll see on thousands of other slots. It offers 20 fixed paylines, and you must land three or more matching symbols along them to create winning combinations.

Step ‘N Win

Where Stepping Diamonds starts to show it’s not a generic classic slot is through its Step ‘N Win feature. On each spin, the box above the reels will reveal a number from 1 to 5. When a Diamond symbol lands on the reels, the Step ‘N Win feature triggers. All instances of the Diamond have their values increased by the number displayed in the box, and then they’re paid out. Those symbols can hold default cash values as a multiplier of the stake between 0.5x and 35x. Each step is worth 0.5x.

Stepping Diamonds slot bonus features

The Stepping Diamonds slot also has a bonus game, which triggers when six or more Diamond symbols land on the reels during the base game. Let’s take a look at it in more detail below.

Lock ‘N Spin Bonus Game

The more scatters that land, the larger the playing grid the bonus plays out on:

  • Six Diamond Symbols Award a 5×3 grid
  • Seven Diamond Symbols Award a 5×4 grid
  • Eight Diamond Symbols Award a 5×5 grid

You receive 3 initial re-spins, which reset to 3 each time a new Diamond or Cashpot symbol lands. It’s also possible to trigger the Step ‘N Win feature during this feature. Once you run out of re-spins, you receive the values of all collected symbols. Alternatively, if you fill all positions with symbols, you win those values but with a full 5 steps applied to them.

Cashpot Symbols

Also, during the Lock’N Spin bonus game, Cashpot Diamond symbols can land holding fixed jackpots. These have a default value as listed below but can also be upgraded via the Step ‘N Win feature:

  • Mini (20x) and can upgrade by 2x up to a maximum of 90x
  • Mini (50x) and can upgrade by 5x up to a maximum of 200x
  • Mini (100x) and can upgrade by 10x up to a maximum of 350x
  • Mini (500x) and can upgrade by 50x up to a maximum of 1,500x

Pros

  • The slot looks fantastic in terms of graphics and presentation.

Cons

  • Adjustable RTP ranges - the top RTP is 96.20%, but some versions could have as low as 84.20%.
  • Lacks a real headline feature.

Stepping Diamonds Slot Review FInal Thoughts

The presentation and production of Stepping Diamonds are great, and you'd expect nothing less from Play'n Go, but I left the game feeling it still lacked something and was nothing more than mid-range effort from Play'n Go.
