Game Overview
Hadooooo-ken! Sorry, I had to get that out of my system early! If you were around when the first iteration of Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior hit the arcades, then I’m probably about to make you feel very old – did you know that it was more than three decades ago?! It’s actually a little amazing that it took so long for a developer to make a slot based on Capcom’s timeless arcade smash. Was it worth the wait? Well, there are no paylines or payways to discuss – wins are instead awarded for adjacent clusters of four or more matching symbols. The RTP is above average at 96.09%, while the maximum jackpot is a more-than-reasonable 7,104x the total bet. And with that, let’s not waste any more time – it’s time to find out if NetEnt can do such a well-known property justice!
Sonic Boom! Ahem. If NetEnt had just released a bog-standard online slot with a few Street Fighter characters thrown in, I’d almost certainly feel cheated, regardless of how big the jackpot was! It seems that NetEnt must have realised just how strong people’s attachment to this franchise is, so the base game is played in a bout format where your chosen fighter takes on a second character. The battle ends when one of the characters runs out of health points; a loss will return you to the character select screen to try again, whilst a win will see you take on the four bosses in the free spin bonus round. Oh, and we even get the classic car smash bonus game as well!
Spinning bird… keeek! How are your Street Fighter 2 skills nowadays? Are you a little rusty? Or do you think you still have what it takes to control Guile and take M.Bison down a peg or two? Why not brush up on your special moves before showing off your skills in our free demo slot of Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior? Here comes a new challenger!
Street Fighter 2 Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
The first Street Fighter video game hit the arcades in 1987, and whilst it was reasonably popular for its time, it certainly didn’t set the world on fire. Capcom originally planned a scrolling beat ‘em up under the codename Street Fighter ’90, but the project was eventually released under the name Final Fight. The reason for this was that director Yoshiki Okamoto expressed a strong desire to build on the original game’s format by adding new characters, special moves, and a much more fleshed-out combat system. The success of the first version of Street Fighter 2 – subtitled ‘The World Warrior’ – eventually led to a flood of updates such as Champion Edition, Hyper Fighting, and Super Street Fighter 2, though fans had to wait over six years for a true sequel in the shape of Streetfighter 3.
Getting back to the slot machine now, there are 12 high-paying ‘victory’ symbols which have been pulled directly from the winner portraits of the arcade game, all of which share identical maximum payouts of 30x the total bet for a 16+ symbol cluster. The loser portraits are also included as a further 12 medium-paying symbols with slightly lower returns of 20x the bet for a maximum cluster of 16 or more adjacent symbols. The low-paying symbols are just standard royals paying 10x the bet each, but they have at least been drawn in pixel art style, making them fit in well with the more valuable symbols.
When playing this game in demo mode, the minimum/maximum permitted wagers range between €0.20 and €700.00, respectively. The maximum bet allowed at my favourite online casino is a little lower at €100.00 per spin, but this may vary from one site to the next.
Base Game & Modifiers
NetEnt has gone for a grid slot design in Street Fighter 2, a decision I am certainly pleased with! The playfield features five reels of five rows each for a total of 25 symbol positions, with wins awarded for clusters of four or more adjacent matching symbols rather than the more traditional pay ways or pay lines.
Battles
The base game consists of a series of battles, each of which includes multiple spins. A battle starts with you choosing a character from the eight standard fighters available in The World Warrior arcade, after which a random character will be selected to be your opponent.
There is no limit to the number of spins that a battle may consist of – the fight only ends when the life bar of one of the characters is entirely depleted. You cannot change your character until the current bout is over and the game returns you to the character select screen.
Characters
The eight different playable characters in Street Fighter 2 are not just a cosmetic feature of this machine! Each fighter has their own RTP and a unique set of special moves and high-paying symbols.
Each character has a Wild Combo meter – similar to the SUPER gauge from Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo – which fills by one point for every symbol removed from the reels. The meter can fill up multiple times during a single game round, and each filled meter will add a single wild symbol in a random position as a modifier for the current round.
Street Fighter 2 Slot Bonus Features
Defeat your opponent during the base game, and you will advance to the ‘Beat the Boss’ bonus round, where you will take on Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and the feared M.Bison! Lost the fight, and you’ll have to make do with the car smash bonus.
Beat The Boss Feature
This is a four-level bonus round, with each level based on one of the four boss characters featured in The World Warrior arcade game. Level one starts with a 2x multiplier, eventually increasing to 3x, 5x, and even 10x if you make it to the final bout against M.Bison. Defeating M.Bison will award an additional bonus of 100x the total bet in addition to your free spin winnings.
Car Smash Bonus
If your health meter is entirely depleted during a base game battle, the Car Smash Bonus Game will be activated. In this mode, you take control of your character using the arrow and control keys to destroy the car!
If you succeed, the game will award you a random prize of between 5x and 15x the total bet. Unfortunately, this isn’t a speed test as it was in the arcades!
Insert Coin Feature
This unique gamble feature allows you to continue playing the ‘Beat the Boss’ mode that appears at the end of each successful battle.
When ‘Beat the Boss’ mode ends, the game will offer you the chance to gamble a percentage of your winnings in return for another shot at the bonus round. The Insert Coin feature can only be used once per bonus round.
Street Fighter 2 Slot Review Final Thoughts
It would have been easy for NetEnt just to throw together a typical online slot featuring Street Fighter symbols and call it a day, but I guess they didn’t like the ‘easy’ option!
Instead, the developer has put a great deal of energy into re-creating the experience of playing Street Fighter 2 in slot machine form – it sounds insane, but somehow they have really pulled it off in style.
As a massive fan of the original arcade, I’m hugely impressed with what NetEnt has come up with here – my only question is, when’s the Champion Edition coming?
You win… Perfect!
