Game Overview
Sugar has undoubtedly become a major enemy of the establishment in recent years. In my country, the government has even implemented a ‘sugar tax’, which resulted in many popular beverages removing the majority of the sugar from their drinks. This is a relatively minor annoyance for most people – we’ve all gotten used to our favourite beverages tasting a little different by now, but not everyone is so easily swayed, enter the Sugar Monster, the star of a Red Tiger scatter-pay slot machine with a 95.68% RTP and a top prize of 10,806x! This guy means business, and he’s going to war with the world’s governments on behalf of diabetics, probably.
“I WANT IT ALL!” shouts the sugar monster, but what tools does he have in his arsenal? Firstly, the monster acts as the game’s wild symbol, but he’s also a hungry fellow who devours all your winning symbols to fill his ‘sugar level’ progress bar. Filling the meter will reward you with a set of ten free spins, but it’s not all plain sailing – sometimes, the monster will eat a little too much, causing him to barf out cotton candy multiplier symbols! That sounds much more pleasant than my own memories of getting sick – he’s a lucky fellow, this monster, isn’t he? When you do make your way to the free spins, you’ll be treated to a much-enhanced version of the game where multipliers are retained between spins and scoring four consecutive wins during a single round will top up your remaining counter with three additional spins.
How do you feel about the war on sugar? Should we be allowed to decide what we want to eat ourselves, or are governments doing the right thing by implementing restrictions on our behalf? Wow, that question is far too serious for a slot review, isn’t it? Forget I said anything and give our free demo slot of Sugar Monster a few spins – it’s available to play below!
Sugar Monster Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
If their recent output is anything to go by, my guess is that slot developers never got the memo about the war on sugar! Fans of the white stuff have been completely spoilt recently – there’s Pragmatic Play’s amazing Sugar Twist and Sugar Rush machines, BGaming’s Sweet Rush Megaways, and Play’N’Go’s Sweet Alchemy franchise, to name but a few. All of these games share a similar visual appearance and, in many cases, even play similarly as well. Whilst Sugar Monster is far from the first sugar-based slot (and isn’t even the first scatter-pay sugar game), it manages to separate itself from the crowd thanks to the presence of the Sugar Monster, who gives this machine a unique and quirky feel.
The paytable is separated into two groups – the high-paying symbols are represented by a variety of cakes, the most valuable of which has a yellow hue and offers a return of 50x the total bet when 20 or more matching symbols appear anywhere on the playfield. The second-placed cake has a dollop of icing sitting proudly on top with a payout of 30x for a 20+ symbol combination, whilst the remaining pink, striped, and purple cakes return 24x, 20x, and 16x, respectively. The low pays feature geometric shapes – there’s a star worth 12x for a maximum 20+ symbol hit, followed by 10x for the pentagon, 8x for the heart, 6x for the circle, and 4x for the triangle.
As for the betting range, low rollers will be pleased to see that Red Tiger has allowed wagers of just €0.10 at the lower end, whilst the maximum bet is limited to €8.00 per spin. There may be a few high rollers who feel disappointed at this relatively low upper limit, but I’m sure they will be in the minority.
Base Game & Modifiers
Grid slots are one of the most popular types of games currently available at online casinos, so it’s no surprise that developers have been pumping these machines out at a blistering pace recently. Sugar Monster uses a 6×6 configuration for its ‘reels’, but the scatter-pay mechanic differs from the cluster-pays that you may have seen used in other grid slots. Games such as this only require you to hit 12 or more matching symbols anywhere on the screen to score yourself a win, and with 36 positions available, that means you can theoretically win up to three times per round from the initial symbol drop.
Sugar Monster
The Sugar Monster is a wild symbol that can only land during the initial symbol drop and does not disappear when other winning symbols are removed from the playfield.
Cotton Multipliers
When the sugar monster eats too much, there is a chance that he will produce up to three cotton candy multiplier symbols after he has finished eating your winning symbols! Each cotton candy multiplier can be worth 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 10x, 20x, 25x, 50x, or 100x.
If more than one multiplier symbol is visible on the reels at the end of a round, their values will be added together before the total is applied to your winnings.
Sugar Monster Slot Bonus Features
Sugar Monster does not include any traditional scatter symbols, as the bonus round is triggered by the monster himself! You’ll still need to be quite lucky to reach the feature though, as it is only activated when four consecutive wins occur during a single round.
Free Spins
At the start of the free spins feature, the sugar monster will grow into a 2×2 symbol that locks in place in the centre of the screen. The monster will continue to produce multipliers in this mode just as he does in the base game; however, unlike the base game, those multipliers will persist between rounds!
In this mode, the sugar meter, previously used to trigger the free spins, is used for awarding re-triggers. Four consecutive wins during a single round will add three more free spins to your remaining total.
Bonus Buy
If permitted within your country or jurisdiction, a bonus buy menu is available next to the regular spin button. Opening this menu presents two options – the ‘sugar monster’ button is effectively a bonus bet that costs 3x the normal price per spin, whilst the ‘free spins’ are priced at 80x the current stake.
Pros
- Fun ‘sugar monster’ theme separates this from other sweet-based slots
- Cotton multipliers make big wins possible even during the base game
- Excellent bonus round with accumulating multipliers and sticky wild.
Cons
- The feature seems difficult to hit naturally.
Final Thoughts
I must admit, I really struggled to think of any genuine cons to this game – I’m a huge fan of grid slots, and scatter-pay games are even better. The theme is really the icing on the cake here – the jackpot could be bigger, but at over 10,000x, it’s not really a serious complaint.
