Sword Of Shoguns Slot (Thunderkick) Slot Demo & Review

Every country around the world is steeped in its own unique history, but one of the more fascinating places has to be Japan, with most people instantly thinking of the legendary samurai once they hear its name. It would appear that game developer Thunderkick also has a soft spot for the land of the rising sun as they are set to take us on yet another Asian adventure in their slot titled Sword of Shoguns. The game comes with some decent-looking stats, and we have 5,040 paylines in play, an RTP of 96.15%, and a maximum win of 25,200x bet

How about the features then? Well, we’ve got a fairly ordinary-looking base game, although the random reel heights are an interesting addition, but more on those later. As for the game’s main bonus round, this is a free spins affair, triggered when three or more scatters appear in view. A random symbol will then be awarded as your expanding symbol for the bonus game, but it’s possible, through re-triggers, to add an extra three symbols to your tally for additional chances of reel expansions. Finally, the last of the in-game features is the bonus buy option, which grants instant access to the free spins at the cost of 120x the current bet.

It looks like we are about to embark on another epic tale of power and honour, so why not get a taste of what’s to come and try out the free demo slot of Sword of Shoguns, we’ve got it waiting for you below.

Swords Of Shoguns Slot Paytable
Swords of Shoguns slot paytable

There are many styles of online slots that we all enjoy playing, with some having themes that are a little more serious and even historical than others. One such provider who has taken us back into the past before is Thunderkick with the release of their highly popular slot Sword of Khans, which, as you may have already guessed, was based on the leader of the Mongol Empire, Genghis Khan. Perhaps due to the success of this game, the Swedish developer has again decided to dip their toe into the historical slot pool and bring us Sword of Shoguns, which is based upon the military dictators of Japan who wielded more power than the emperors themselves.

We’re kicking things off as always with the paytable, and the highest value symbol is the Shogun, worth 5x bet for a six of a kind win. This is followed by the ceremonial helmet valued at 3x for a complete line of six. Next, we have the body armour at 2.5x, the fan at 2.2x and the last of premium paying symbols, the sword, paying 2x for a completed line of six. The low pays come in the form of six royal symbols, which are the Ace valued at 1.3x, the King at 1.2x, the Queen at 1.1x, and finally, the Jack, Ten, and Nine, all of which will pay 1x for a six of a kind hit.

Joining the action for real money play on Swords of Shoguns starts from €0.10 a spin, with several options available before reaching the maximum stake of €100. There aren’t as many bet sizes on offer between these two amounts as you’d probably expect, but there are enough variations toward the bottom end to make it accessible for all players, in my opinion.

Base Game & Modifiers

Sword Of Shoguns Slot Base Game

I mentioned the random reel heights in the intro of this review, and on each of the six reels of Sword of Shoguns, it’s possible that either 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 symbols can appear on every spin. However, the interesting part is that the ways to win will be fixed at 5,040, no matter what. This style of reel mechanic does give the game a real Megaways feel to it, but regardless of what it may look like visually, you’ll never be awarded more or fewer paylines than that fixed amount.

As for hitting a winning combo, it’s pretty much business as usual, and you’ll need to match at least three symbols from left to right for the corresponding cash value to be credited to your account. There is one exception, and that is the Shogun symbol, where you’ll only need two to land for a win to be paid.

Sword Symbol

Although it is not possible to form a win with the sword symbol, this does act as the wild symbol in both the base game and bonus feature, as well as doubling up as the scatter.

Landing three or more of the bonus scatter symbols in view will trigger the main bonus round and award a random amount of free spins with the value of 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, or 12. Additionally the sword will reveal a random symbol from the paytable which will act as your expanding symbol for the duration of the bonus.

Free Spins

Once the free spins begin, the aim is for your chosen symbol to land on as many reels as possible. You will need at least three to land ( 2 in the case of the Shogun ) for those symbols to expand across the whole reel and pay you the win multiple times. It’s possible through landing re-triggers that a further 3 symbols can be awarded, with each re-trigger also awarding either 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 extra spins.

Bonus Buy

Those fortunate enough to be playing in a region where the bonus buy is active can trigger the free spins instantly for the cost of 120x the current stake, with this also increasing the RTP to 96.40%.

Pros

  • Interesting reel mechanic.
  • Good maximum win of 25,200x.
  • Nice to see a different theme being used.

Cons

  • Some may feel it is a bit of a Megaways copy.
  • Only four symbols can be in play during the free spins.

Final Thoughts

Our visitors here at Demoslot love playing Sword of Khans, so it will be interesting to see how Sword of Shoguns shapes up against it. Personally, even though this version has a higher max win and a different reel format, I still prefer the original game. What do you think? Try out the demo above and decide.
