The original Taco Brothers online slot has been quite the hit for ELK Studios, with over 91 million rounds played by slot fans from every corner of the planet. It’s no surprise then that the developer has brought the boys back in Taco Brothers Derailed for the next phase in their adventures, but creating a worthy sequel to a smash-hit game is no easy task – can ELK Studios pull it off? They certainly haven’t taken the easy option – gone are the 243 pay ways, and in are 466 “connecting paylines” – this is a new payout mechanic which seems to be gaining popularity recently, but many players are still likely to be unfamiliar with how it works, so we’ll explain in full in the “Base Gameplay” section below. The RTP is a disappointing 95%, but the maximum win redeems things slightly at 10,000x stake.
There’s a whole bunch of mods and features included too – far more than in the original Taco Brothers slot. Walking Wilds spice up the base game action, even including multipliers in certain situations, and there are two bonus rounds to look forward to such as the “Taco Train Heist” and “Taco Smash N’ Grab”. Taco Brothers Derailed Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
So aside from our Taco fanatic brothers, what else have we got going on here in terms of the theme? Honestly, I’m at something of a loss. There’s a safe full of gold bars, something that resembles a lantern, an animal skull, a whistle, a pair of maracas… could this collection of objects be any more random? I’m sure these are all essential tools of the trade for those who stop trains to steal tacos, but not being part of that specialist demographic, I’m struggling to work out how to McGuyver these objects into a viable plan. I’d ask the Taco Brothers for a little helping hand if I could, but one of them looks far too happy whilst holding a bomb for my liking… please do drop me an e-mail if you work out the answer, the best suggestion wins a bumper box of Tacos. Probably.
The original Taco Brothers slot featured five reels, whilst Taco Brothers Derailed boosts this to six. As such, you are going to need to line up six of the red Taco Brother on one of those “connecting paylines” to score the biggest win on the paytable of 50x your stake, whilst the blue Taco Brother returns just 10x your stake and the green brother pays only 5x for all six – it’s clear who was mummies favourite, I guess. The payouts for all the symbols feel a little bit disappointing to me, but on the plus side, at least all of the symbols are stacked on the reels so you can win a whole bunch of these payouts from a single paid spin if you are lucky.
Hitting the coin symbol in the bottom-left corner will take you to a separate screen where you can select your stake. The minimum bet is a reasonable €0.20 per spin whilst the maximum is five hundred times higher at a monstrous €100.00 per spin. This isn’t unusual in the world of online slots these days, but there are only twelve possible options in between the two ends of the spectrum, which doesn’t feel like nearly enough to me.
Base Game & Modifiers
Taco Brothers Derailed online slot utilizes a 6×3 playfield, which looks fairly standard at first glance, but there are a couple of important things to note. One minor issue I feel should be mentioned is the implementation of responsive design that ELK Studios continues to use in their games – whilst other slot developers reflow their user interface to suit different display sizes and resolutions, ELK opts to simply resize the game to fit whatever viewport is available. This results in a very ugly appearance when playing the game on some devices, and in some cases, causes the game to be completely unplayable.
The so-called “connecting paylines” payout mechanic works similarly to pay ways, however, each symbol that forms part of a winning combination must be on an adjacent line to both the previous and next matching symbol.
For example, say you have matching symbols on reels one, two, and three, but the symbol on the second reel is on the third row whilst the symbol on reels one and three are on the top row, this would not count as a winning line. If the symbol on the second reel was instead located on the second row, that WOULD create a winning line.
The easiest way to think about this is that symbols must be connected either horizontally or diagonally from left to right in order to create a winning pay line, and this results in a total of 466 possible ways to score a winning combination.
Walking Wild Modifier
Although there is no specific wild symbol in the Taco Brothers Derailed slot game, all three of the Taco Brother symbols will occasionally have the word “Wild” overlaid on top of them. When these symbols appear, regular play will be paused and you will receive a series of free re-spins, as the wild taco brother moves from right to left across the reels. Any other matching taco brother symbols will also be converted into walking wilds during these free re-spins.
Even more occasionally, the taco brother wild symbols will have a multiplier attached to them as well. I didn’t see this very often during my testing of the game, but each time a multiplier wild did show up I ended up winning over 100x my stake – this probably explains why they are so rare!
Taco Brothers Derailed Slot Free Spins Feature
The bonus scatter symbols only appear on reels two through five in Taco Brothers Derailed, and you will need to hit at least three of them simultaneously to trigger the Taco Train Heist bonus game.
Taco Train Heist Bonus Game
During this bonus, all three-walking wild taco brother symbols are guaranteed to appear. A random brother will appear on reel six at the beginning of each free spin, with a random multiplier applied at the beginning of each free re-spin. Because this creates an extremely lucrative situation, two blocking symbols including police officer Captain Diaz are added to the reels during the bonus game only.
If a taco brother runs into either of the blocking symbols they will be locked up, and the bonus round will finish automatically once all three brothers have been caught and safely remanded into custody, securing the supply of Tacos for the rest of us. If it wasn’t for Captain Diaz, we might never get to eat another delicious taco ever again!
Taco Smash N’grab Bonus Game
This special version of the train heist bonus game is triggered by hitting all four possible scatter symbols during regular play. In this mode, Captain Diaz has moved over to the dark side and teamed up with the taco brothers… it’s a dark day for Taco lovers my friends. Captain Diaz is wild in this version of the bonus and doesn’t even lock up these taco thieving miscreants who have held up a train. The guy should be sacked!
X-citer Bonus Buy Feature

I had more than a few reservations before beginning to play this game, but my worries were soon forgotten as I found myself having a bunch of fun both playing and reviewing Taco Brothers Derailed. This game is based on a crazy concept, but looks, sounds, and plays fantastically. Keep an eye out for this one – if there is any justice in this world, ELK Studios deserve to have a major hit on their hands.
