Temple Of Tollan (Play'n Go) Slot Demo & Review

I get the feeling that Play’n Go has a superstition. Much like a footballer who never changes his underpants until his team loses, Play’n Go seemingly sticks to temple adventure-type themes until a slot flops. Either that or the entire development team is Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider fanatics. It is logical, though, why wouldn’t you stick to something that has given you so much success over the years? For example, some of PNG’s best work has been the Rich and Cat Wilde-themed games and the many Ancient-Egyptian-themed ‘Book’ slots they’ve released. As you’ve probably worked out, Temple of Tollan, Play’n Go’s latest release, is another in a similar vein, although we’re unlocking the secrets of an Aztec temple in this one. Temple of Tollan is a 7×7 grid slot with cluster pays, a 15,000x max win, and a 96.20% RTP.

As with most cluster pays slots, the main aim of Temple of Tollan is to land a chain reaction of wins from the same spin. In fact, doing so not only delivers more winning combinations but could also trigger a series of special modifiers. Five special symbols with up to 3 lives are placed randomly on the grid for each spin and, once destroyed, will perform modifiers such as adding wilds, destroying symbols, transforming others, or increasing a win multiplier. Plus, destroy enough of them, and you’ll trigger the free spins bonus.

Temple Of Tollan Slot Paytable

In the introduction, I’ll admit I exaggerated Play’n Go’s love of temple adventure-type slot games, but you can’t blame me for feeling that way. The developer has already released just over 20 slots in 2024 (May at the time of writing), and only four feature similar themes to this one. That is still 20% of this year’s titles, though, so I’m not totally going overboard with what I’m saying. If you’re wondering what those slots were, besides today’s slot review of Temple of Tollan, Play’n Go has already brought Tomb of Gold, Banquet of Dead, and Cat Wilde and the Incan Quest to market.

We’re over to the paytable next, and the symbols on the Temple of Tollan are made up of hieroglyphics. The Red Cat is the top-paying symbol, as it will return 100x the stake for 20+ combinations. What I like is that there isn’t a huge drop in value down to the rest of the premiums, as the Lizard, Frog, and Bat pay 80x, 70x, and 60x, respectively, for 20 or more in a combo. As for the low pays, the Orange, Red, and Green symbols return up to 30x, and the Blue and Purple are both worth 20x the bet for clusters of 20 or more symbols.

Finally, we conclude this section with the bet selection and stake size options on Temple of Tollan, which range from €0.10 to a maximum of €100.00 per spin.

Temple Of Tollan Slot Base Game & Modifiers

Temple of Tollan is another in a long list of grid slots that I’ve reviewed recently, but it’s the first in a while I’ve seen using the cluster pays mechanic. The grid comprises 7 reels and 7 rows, and you’ll need to land clusters of four or more matching symbols connected vertically or horizontally to create a winning combo.

Symbols involved in those clusters disappear from the grid, and more drop downwards through the playfield to replace them. The cascades continue until no new combination wins are created.

Special Symbols

Before each spin, special symbols with 1, 2, or 3 lives are placed in random positions on the reels. Each time a winning combination is created next to them, they lose a life. Once one of these symbols loses all its lives, it is destroyed after triggering its special feature. The modifiers that can trigger are:

  • Multiplier: This increases a global multiplier by up to 50x.
  • Wild Feature: Two to six wild symbols are added to the grid.
  • Destroy: Removes random symbols from the reels.
  • Transform: Transforms all instances of one type of symbol into another.
  • Cross: Removes symbols from the reels in a cross fashion.

If you can destroy all those special symbols and fill the meter to the left of the reels, the free spins bonus round on Temple of Tollan will be triggered.

Free Spins Feature

The free spins bonus game is triggered if a single spin destroys five or more special symbols. Any multiplier obtained from the base game carries over into the bonus and does not reset between spins. During this feature, the special bonus symbols remain sticky on the reels, and you’ll receive an additional 4 free spins each time a spin leads to the destruction of five or more special symbols.

Pros

  • The sort of cluster pays mayhem many of us adore.

Cons

  • No buy bonus feature - which doesn't bother me but will many others.

Temple Of Tollan Slot Review Final Thoughts

Temple of Tollan was an absolute pleasure to play during my testing. The cluster pays, cascades, and special modifiers keep you interested with plenty of base game hits. The free spins bonus is more of the same, although I’m disappointed other elements were not added to make it more of an upgrade from regular spins. Still, Temple of Tollan is another excellent addition to Play’n Go’s vast portfolio of slot games.
