If I didn’t know any better, I would probably have assumed that Ternion was some superhero movie that I had missed out on at some point during the past year or two. The new online slot from Play’N’Go includes three main characters, and whilst they aren’t given a name in the game, their powers are Ice Shards, Blade Flurry, and Pillars of Flame. It turns out that the term Ternion refers to nothing more complicated than the number three or three things together. This obviously relates to the superhero characters – it certainly doesn’t address the 20 paylines, 11,111x maximum jackpot, or default RTP of 96.20%.
The three ‘powers’ assigned to the main characters of Ternion can show up as modifiers during the base game but are much more powerful – and profitable – during the free spin bonus round. The so-called Doomsday Free Spins will initially award 8, 10, or 14 free spins, but this can be further extended by hitting additional scatter symbols whilst the feature is active. An extra fourth modifier can occasionally trigger during the base game, dubbed the ‘Call for Heroes’. I could certainly imagine the three main characters that feature in this game appearing in a Marvel movie, but they certainly aren’t the first such people to make an appearance in an online slot such as this. Pragmatic Play’s Dragon Hero is one example, although the same developer’s Legend of Heroes Megaways is perhaps a more accurate match for this particular machine. Comparing the two games directly, Play’N’Go’s is probably the better looking of the pair, whilst Pragmatic Play’s effort has a more extensive feature set and includes bonus bet and buy features that aren’t present in Ternion.
As for which game pays better, the highest-paying symbol on Ternion’s paytable is the wild, offering a return of 50x the total bet for a complete payline of five of a kind. This matches the payout for the highest-paying regular symbol too, which is the male character with the ‘Pillars of Flame’ ability. The two females are slightly less generous on this occasion – the green ‘Blade Flurry’ lady offers 37.5x the total bet for all five of her symbols, whilst the blue ‘Ice Shards’ hero is the least valuable of the three with a payout of 25x for a complete payline. There’s a single medium-paying symbol – the purple gem – paying 5x the total bet for all five symbols, after which we are down to just the five royals, which offer between 1.5x and 2.5x the total bet for a five-of-a-kind combination. These returns seem generous compared to those of Pragmatic Play’s game, but remember that this slot has just 20 pay lines, rather than the 117,649 Megaways available in Legend of Heroes.
I have no complaints regarding the betting range available in Ternion; the minimum/maximum wager limits have been set at €0.20 and €100.00, respectively, and there are plenty of intermediate bets and a quick selection bar, making switching between them fast and convenient.
Base Game & Modifiers
The regular base game action of Ternion takes place on a slightly enlarged 5×4 reel set. As there are just 20 paylines available, it can feel a tad challenging to hit a winning combination at some points during play. All of the symbols on the paytable require at least three matches starting from the leftmost reel to award a prize. Thankfully, Play’N’Go has included a few modifiers to help you in your quest for a profitable session!
Ice Shards Modifier
The first of the three modifiers is assigned to the blue female character and can add between three and ten wild symbols to the reels in random positions. Like all character-based modifiers, this one is more likely to spawn additional wild symbols during the free spin bonus round.
Blade Flurry Modifier
The following modifier is assigned to the green female and will remove all the low-paying symbols from the entire playfield each time it activates. I’m not entirely sure how this one is supposed to be ‘more powerful’ during the free spins – perhaps because it can activate simultaneously with one or both of the other modifiers.
Pillars Of Flame Modifier
The third and final character modifier is assigned to the most lucrative of the three characters – the male, predictably! – and can transform between one and four of the five main reels into full stacks of wild symbols.
Call For Heroes Modifier
A fourth and final modifier is available during the base game only, and this one will add two ‘free’ scatter symbols to reels one and two every time it is activated. The paytable does not indicate that the odds of hitting one or more of the other three available scatters increases when the ‘Call for Heroes’ modifier is triggered, but my own experience of playing the game does suggest this to be the case.
Ternion Slot Bonus Features
Three, four, or five bonus scatter symbols appearing anywhere during the base game will award eight, 10, or 14 free spins, respectively. The bonus round can also be re-triggered whilst it is active, up to a maximum of 38 free spins.
Doomsday Free Spins
During the Doomsday free spins, the three character-based modifiers will activate naturally far more often than during the base game. Additionally, all purple crystal symbols that appear during this mode will be collected for further use.
After every five crystals are collected, the game will trigger one or more character modifiers on the following spin. The more crystals you collect, the higher the bonus level you will achieve, and the more characters will be summoned simultaneously.
Furthermore, hitting one, two, or three scatter symbols whilst the feature is in play will add another three, five, or seven free spins to your remaining total.
Ternion Slot Review Final Thoughts
There have been a lot of comments in the media recently about the declining quality of superhero movies in recent years, but Ternion doesn’t look to be another casualty of this drop in quality! The last couple of Play’N’Go games I have reviewed have not been their best, but this one looks like a return to form for the developer – give it a try when you spot it at your favourite online casino.
