It’s been a good three or four weeks since I last reviewed an Ancient Egyptian-themed slot, and believe me, that’s pretty good going, considering how popular this theme is. There must be hundreds of Egyptian slots by now, each focusing on ancient pyramids, tombs, and pharaohs, and today, I’m back to bring news of another as Backseat Gaming has released The Cursed King via the Hacksaw Gaming platform. It is a 5×5 reel slot game offering 19 paylines, a 96.31% RTP, and a max win of 12,500x the stake.
Once powered up, you’ll instantly see the Hacksaw Gaming influence as the betting overlay/controls are the same as you’ll find on most of the developer’s creations. Visually, the slot looks good, especially the bats flying across the screen and the hieroglyphics on the walls. The Cursed King Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
If you’re an experienced slots player, you’ll already know there are countless slots with a similar Ancient Egyptian theme to that used on The Cursed King. It’s an especially popular theme in the ‘Book of’ slot genre, which has spawned some of the most popular slots of all time, such as Novomatic’s Book of Ra and the Book of Dead slot from Play’n Go. Other alternatives worth looking at are Ankh of Anubis from Hacksaw Gaming, whilst the Gonzo’s Quest demo slot is another title that remains popular here on our site.
There are not any payouts I’d classify as spectacular, but as you’ll find out later, the winning potential brought by Cursed King expanding wild multipliers that can deliver up to 100x is probably a reason for this. Regular Wilds, which substitute for all standard symbols and the Egyptian God Ra, share the top step with 5-symbol payouts of 10x the stake. Next in line is the Purple Artefact, which can deliver up to 8x, while the Scarab rewards 6x for five across a line and the Scorpion and Snake each pay up to 4x. The best of the low pays is the 1.5x offered up for a full line of Aces, the King and Queen share 1.2x, and the same goes for the Jack and Ten, with both offering returns of up to 1x.

The Cursed King slot functions on a 5-reel, 5-row, and 25-position grid, offering 19 paylines. Triggering a payout will require a minimum of three matching symbols to land across one of those paylines starting from the leftmost reel.
Wild Reels
Thanks to the Cursed King Wild Reels feature, there’s more to the base game than hoping matching symbols line up across the ways to win. If the Pharaoh symbol appears in any position on a winning spin, it will expand into a full reel wild multiplier symbol holding 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, or 100x. It substitutes for all regular symbols when it can create a winning combo and will apply its multiplier value to the standard combination payout.

The Cursed King has just a single bonus game, but it can prove quite lucrative thanks to the Cursed King WIld Reel multipliers of up to 100x. To trigger this bonus, you’ll need three or more scatter symbols to land anywhere in view during the base game.
Free Spins Feature
You receive 3, 4, or 5 free spins depending on whether there were 3, 4, or 5 triggering scatter symbols – which, on the face of it, doesn’t sound too promising. However, you should consider these as lives more than spins, as you’ll receive free continual respins as long as there is at least one Expanded Cursed King symbol on the reels. Those symbols will move one position left or right at the start of every respin until they inevitably fall off the first or last reel. If two Cursed Kings walk into each other, they merge into one, and their multipliers of up to 100x are combined.

The Cursed King Slot Review Final Thoughts
Despite the overused theme, The Cursed King brought me plenty of entertainment, mainly because of those Cursed King multiplier wilds that can appear in either game mode. Land a few of them in the base game with decent multipliers, and you stand a good chance of pulling in some worthwhile payouts. All in all, this is a reasonable effort from Backseat Gaming.
