The Goonies Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Branded slots make for some of the most popular games at any online casino, and my there are a lot of them! There are gameshow-based slots such as Millionaire Megaways, movie-based games like this one and Beetlejuice Megaways, and plenty of TV-based games, too. Games such as Count Duckula straddle multiple categories, being both a cartoon-based slot as well as being based on a popular TV show. These games clearly attract a license fee from their developers, which does make you wonder if perhaps they are likely to be a little less generous than their non-branded counterparts. The RTP of The Goonies is still 96% though – the same as many other online slots – but the top win of 1000x is a little bit on the low side, even if it is possible to win a bit more than this via a lucky sequence of bonus rounds.
The numbers shown on the paytable reference the number of coins you will win when playing at the minimum bet – therefore, five wilds are the highest-paying combination, although a full payline of them is only worth 25x the total bet. The treasure chest and ship symbols share equal returns of 15x each, whilst the pirate flag – which also appears in a stacked configuration – is worth the same as the wild at 25x for each complete pay line. That just leaves the skeleton and scales, both worth 10x each for all five symbols, whilst the aces/kings will get you 5x your bet back in winnings. The queens/jacks are worth half as much again, at just 2.5x for a five of a kind combination.
The betting range runs between €0.10 per spin at the low end up to a maximum of just €20.00 at the other. Despite this fairly limited range, there are only a handful of options in between the two limits – this isn’t a game that likes to let you choose how much you want to bet very easily!
Base Game & Modifiers
The main game of The Goonies utilises five reels and 20 fixed paylines where landing at least three matching symbols starting from the leftmost reel first will award you a win. It also features six modifiers that can trigger randomly on any spin if the key to the side of the reel lights up. If it turns green, you will be given a choice of 3 keys, with one that you pick revealing a basic version of the modifier. However, if the key is red, the bonus you reveal will be enhanced. Take a look below at the possible modifiers that can be activated.
- Truffle Shuffle Wilds – A random amount of wilds will be added to the reels, which will move around and position themselves before the remaining symbols spin in and land in the vacant positions.
- Mikey’s Hidden Riches – Each reel will be hit and covered with a giant club; as the club is removed, it will reveal if the reel has been changed to a full reel wild.
- Data’s Colossal Symbols – The reels will continue to spin, and as they do, three adjacent reels can turn into a colossal symbol that gives the opportunity for a decent sized win, especially if the three symbols line up on the first three reels.
- Mouth’s Lucky Coins – Mystery symbols are added to the reels in the shape of gold coins. Once a random amount has been added, the reels will stop, and any position featuring a gold coin will turn into a random symbol from the paytable. This can result in some good wins if you hit a premium paying symbol.
- Bonus Boost – Extra bonus symbols are added to the reels, and although this does not guarantee that you will trigger the bonus round, your chances do dramatically increase.
- Sloth’s Win Spin – Sloth will fly across the screen, adding a high paying symbol to various positions as he does; this often leads to a big win heading your way.
The Goonies Slot Bonus Features
To trigger the bonus on The Goonies, you will need to land 3 or more of the bonus scatter symbols anywhere in view. If you achieve this, you will be taken to the bonus wheel, where you will be randomly awarded one of the following 6 features.
- Fratelli Hideout Bonus – During this bonus, you are given the option to select a key; this will either reveal a cash amount that is based on the stake you are playing at, a hidden tunnel where you get the chance to advance to one of the better bonus features or a collect symbol that will end the bonus game.
- Skeleton Organ Bonus – Whilst playing this bonus feature, you will select organ keys; these can reveal characters from the Goonies that will pay you a total bet Multiplier if you complete the set. Revealing an upgrade icon will increase the size of these multipliers, whilst collecting 3 key symbols will give you a shot at a better bonus game. Hitting 3 skull and crossbones symbols will bring the feature to an end.
- Super Sloth Free Spins – Players head to a different set of reels for this bonus game that contains members of the Fratelli family. If, on any spin, the Super Sloth Wild lands in view, then any member of the Fratelli family on the reels will turn into the top paying symbol. At the end of the bonus round, players are given a final chance to increase their winnings by choosing a lucky chest; this will either reveal additional free spins, the top bonus feature, or a collect symbol that will end the bonus.
- Goonies Go Wild Free Spins – The top paying symbols of the slot are replaced by the characters of the Goonies, and after each free spin, these characters, in turn, will transform into a wild symbols. So after 5 spins, all the Goonies will act as a wild which can lead to some excellent paying winlines. At the end of this bonus, players again have the chance to increase their winnings by choosing one of 5 Doubloons; they will reveal either extra free spins, the top bonus feature, or the collect icon that will end the bonus round.
- Inferno Free Spins – At the beginning of each free spin, the inferno will move across the reels and turn between 1 – 3 consecutive reels fully wild; this offers some big win potential to players. At the end of the free spins, you are again given a chance to enhance your winnings through a spin on the wheel; this will either reward you with additional free spins, the top bonus feature, or you will land on collect, and the bonus will end.
- One-Eyed Willy’s Treasure Bonus – Bet multipliers will spin and stop, and these amounts will be added to your total. The feature ends when the booby trap on the scales is triggered; then, all collected multipliers will be paid.
Bonus Gamble
After your initial spin on the bonus wheel reveals your feature, you then have the option to gamble up the ladder to try to improve it. If you choose to do this, the wheel will display alternate graphics of the next feature on the ladder and a mystery win. If you are successful, then you have the opportunity to gamble up the ladder further and, if you wish, try to reach the top paying feature. However, landing on the mystery win will end the bonus round and pay you around 10x – 15x your stake.
On occasion, when you choose to gamble, you will be awarded a no-lose gamble. When this happens, all positions on the wheel will display the next feature up on the ladder. Additionally, when you lose a gamble, you are sometimes given a bonus respin. We have yet to see this respin lose, so you will move successfully up the ladder again.
Pros
- It’s always nice to have many bonus features to experiment with.
- The Inferno spins can be extremely generous – you just have to hit them first!
- Decent range of base game modifiers.
Cons
- Many of the bonus features aren’t too great, unfortunately, which does kind of negate the appeal of having so many of them.
Final Thoughts
The Goonies movie is undoubtedly a cult classic, but this online slot is a mixed bag. It’s undoubtedly fun, but I struggled to feel as if I was getting a good game out of it while writing this review.
