Bang Bang Games is far from the only Yggdrasil partner to have used the DoubleMax mechanic to build slot games around. Close to 20 DoubleMax slots have been released over the years from developers such as those mentioned previously, Reflex Gaming, Stakelogic, and Boomerang. Of course, Yggdrasil has used the mechanic prominently, too. We’ve reviewed a number of those slots here, including the excellent 10,000 BC DoubleMax from 4ThePlayer and Yggdrasil’s own Christmas-themed Christmas Plaza DoubleMax.
Checking out the paytable on The Runemakers DoubleMax, you’d be forgiven for thinking the symbol payouts are pretty low for a high volatility slot. However, you must remember that this is a cluster pays slot with dropdowns and a progressive DoubleMax multiplier, so you’ll get your wins from successive cascades rather than single combinations. The Red Runes, in a combination of 14 or more symbols, will pay 10x the stake. Not far behind are the Purple, Green and Blue Runes, which pay 8x, 7x, and 6x, respectively. Mystic Mysteries
Sometimes, Mystic Symbols can fall onto the reels after a cascading win. When this happens, all instances of the Mystic Symbols will transform into the same symbol type. More often than not, when these Mystic Symbols land, you’ll walk away with a combination win.

The dropdowns, accompanying wild symbols, and the DoubleMax feature can combine to generate lucrative cascading wins during the base game. However, their combined potential really starts to show during the free spins feature, which triggers once at least 3 scatter symbols land anywhere in view.

Is the Runemakers one of the best DoubleMax slots I’ve played? I’d have to put it up there simply because Bang Bang Games has taken it somewhere new. Generally, this mechanic is used alongside paylines and not clusters, so you must give the developer kudos for trying something different. Fortune favours the brave, they say, and I’d say that is the case here as the DoubleMax mechanic works perfectly alongside the Cluster Pays mechanic.
