The Wild Wings Of Phoenix Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
As we mentioned previously, The Wild Wings of Phoenix has many similarities to NetEnt’s classic Starburst online slot, but the look and feel of the game is entirely different. The graphics in this game look to be influenced by ancient civilisations – perhaps the Mayans or the Aztecs – so expect to see plenty of older-style imagery on the reel set whilst you are playing. Alternatively, you may also look at the characters shown on the reels in a different way – many of the symbols featuring people look as if they could be taking part in the Notting Hill carnival to me, which by coincidence, has just been taking place in London over the past week. There are also animals, plants, and royal symbols providing a bit of variety, and of course, the eponymous Phoenix, which is used as the game’s wild symbol. It’s an eclectic theme that feels reasonably fresh, although I wasn’t overly impressed with the static backdrop.
Starting from the top of the paytable, we have the bonus symbols worth 50x the current bet when all five land together, as well as triggering the free spins feature. This amount is also paid if you hit a five-scatter retrigger during the bonus round – there is no multiplier during the free spins, I’m afraid! The wild symbols pay just as the highest-paying regular symbol at 50x for a full pay line of five-of-a-kind, and as these symbols are stacked on the reels, it should be possible to hit a full screen of the top symbol for a payout of 500x your bet. The male character in a green bubble is the second highest-paying symbol and has a return of 40x for all five, followed by the wildcat who appears in a blue bubble at 30x and the snake in an orange bubble at 25x. Two “middle-paying” symbols are shown with purple and pink bubbles, both of which will pay you 20x for a five-of-a-kind combination. The low-paying royal symbols all have the same return of 10x the current bet for a full pay line.
The betting range seems insanely wide, at least in the demo version of the slot; you can bet from as little as €0.10 per spin up to a maximum of €500.00, and such bets may even be available in real money mode, too as this is a relatively low variance online slot. At a max bet of €500.00, assuming the top jackpot is 500x your stake, this would mean a top prize of a quarter of a million, which is roughly in line with what many online casinos are willing to pay for a slot machine jackpot.

The basic gameplay in The Wild Wings of Phoenix online slot takes place on a standard 5×3 playfield, and there are just ten fixed paylines – close to the minimum you will find in most slot games. We have expanding wilds on the middle free reels; bonus triggering scatter symbols on reels one through five, and just a single main bonus round.
It’s a shame that Booming Games didn’t choose to include a few modifiers or something like that to spice up the base game, but this isn’t that kind of slot – it’s designed to be a medium variance game that will let you play an extended session at relatively high bets if you wish to, with the opportunity to win a decent, if not an enormous amount of money.
Expanding Wild Symbols
The phoenix symbol can appear on reels two, three, and four; each time it does, it will expand to fill the entire reel where it lands. If all three phoenix symbols land simultaneously, you are guaranteed to win at least ten four-of-a-kind combinations and likely at least one five-of-a-kind combination. To win more than this, you’ll need to hit the bonus round – see below!
The Wild Wings Of Phoenix Slot Bonus Features
The bonus scatter symbols appear on all five reels, and whilst you will only win 12 free spins regardless of how many triggering scatters you hit, you do win a little extra cash for a four or five scatter trigger. For example, a three-scatter trigger will pay you 2x your bet as well as awarding the free spins, whilst a four-scatter trigger increases this to 20x, and a five-scatter trigger will pay you 50x in addition to the bonus round.
This part of the game is enhanced by the addition of a symbol upgrade feature which will activate with every phoenix wild that appears whilst the bonus round is in play. There are six middle and high-paying symbols on the reels, and with every wild that lands, one of these symbols will be converted into the highest-paying symbol instead.
After you have landed six or more phoenix symbols, all high-paying symbols on the reels will have been upgraded to the highest paying red lady symbol, making the remainder of your bonus round much more valuable. You will also win additional free spins for every wild that lands during this part of the game – one wild awards just one extra free spin to your remaining counter, whilst two grant three extra spins and all three phoenix wilds will add the maximum of five extra spins to your current total.

Booming Games have done an excellent job of taking the core gameplay of a wildly successful online slot and expanding it with extra features that make it much more interesting to play. I’m not the biggest fan of medium variance slots, but I’d spend a while playing this one – the symbol upgrade feature in the bonus round makes it particularly appealing for me. Recommended!
