The Wish Master Megaways Slot (Red Tiger Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

The original version of The Wish Master was a NetEnt online slot that was released way back in 2014. The game was actually something of a favourite of mine at the time, although I must admit that I had long forgotten about it almost a decade on. It seems that somebody over at Red Tiger must also have been a fan of the game, however, as the developer has resurrected it in Megaways form for a new breed of players in 2023. The revised Red Tiger version titled The Wish Master Megaways offers the traditional up to 117,649 ways to win, alongside a 96.07% RTP and a maximum jackpot of 27,018.6x the player’s total stake.

Just like the original game, hitting a scatter symbol anywhere on the reel set will randomly activate one of the Wish Masters’ special modifiers for the next five spins. In addition, the genie can transform any symbol on the paytable into additional wilds, therefore temporarily replacing all regular occurrences of that symbol; he might also add a 2x or 3x multiplier to any wins that occur whilst the wish is active – if you’re extra lucky, both the 2x and 3x multipliers can be activated at the same time! My personal favourite, however, is the random wilds, which will replace up to five symbols anywhere on the playfield before your winnings are evaluated.

The Wish Master Megaways Slot Paytable

When a game such as The Wishmaster Megaways lands in my inbox, it serves as an instant reminder of just how much worse some modern online slots are in comparison to their older counterparts. Take Lamp of Infinity, from Pragmatic Play, for example, a genie-themed online slot that is nothing short of shocking compared to the original 2014 version of The Wish Master. In fact, try as I might, I couldn’t find a single recent example of a genie-themed game released in the past year or two that could in any way rival NetEnt’s effort from a decade ago! Fortunately, Red Tiger seems to have come along to save the day with this release – The Wish Master Megaways looks to be a worthy update to a classic slot, as far as I can see, in terms of features and presentation.

Trade-offs are an inevitable fact of life with Megaways slots, of course – don’t expect anything remotely similar to the original paytable in this updated version of the game. I’m not even going to try and describe what the high-paying symbols featured in this game are supposed to represent, so I’ll simply say the red symbol is worth 2x the bet for a full payway of six of a kind, followed by the orange at 1.8x, the green at 1.5x, and the blue at 1.2x. As for the low-paying royals, these will get you 0.4x your total stake for six tens, with small bumps along the way until you reach the 1x payout for a complete pay way of six aces.

Its never a great idea to play a super high-volatility slot such as this at big bets, and that is something which I feel Red Tiger is probably keenly aware of as the minimum/maximum permitted wagers allowed here are just €0.10 and €4.00 per round respectively. This makes a refreshing change in my view, as so many other developers are more than happy to permit bets of up to €100.00 per spin on their Megaways slots; sure, it’s always the player’s responsibility to bet sensibly when playing online slots, but I think the decision to limit the maximum wager to such a sensible level in a game such as this is a commendable one on the part of Red Tiger.

Base Game & Modifiers

Unlike some Megaways slots, The Wish Master does not use a separate horizontal reel in addition to its six primary ones. Instead, all six main reels can divide into between two and seven rows during each game round, resulting in a minimum/maximum pay way count of 64 and 117,649, respectively. In addition, all symbols require at least three matches starting from the leftmost reel to award a prize.

Wish Master Features

Whenever one or two scatter symbols land on the playfield, the genie will appear and activate one of his legendary wishes for the next five spins. Note that these aren’t free re-spins – you’ll need to pay for them!

As such, if you change your bet amount after the genie has been summoned, any wishes you have been granted will be stored alongside the previous bet level, ready to be invoked when you change your bet back to its previous setting.

A maximum of three Wish Master features can be active at any one time – if a scatter lands when three wishes are already in effect, the wish master feature that was activated first will be replaced with a new one.

  • Extra Wilds: The two highest-paying symbols will be transformed into additional wild symbols for the next five spins.
  • Wild Reel: The entire reel where the scatter symbol landed will be transformed into a full stack of wilds for the next five spins.
  • Multipliers: All winnings will be multiplied by either 2x or 3x. Both of these wishes can be activated simultaneously, resulting in a total multiplier of 6x.
  • Random Wilds: Two to five random wilds will overlay the corresponding number of regular symbols before winnings are evaluated at the end of each of your next five spins.

The Wish Master Megaways Slot Bonus Features

The Wish Master Megaways does not include a full-on bonus round as such. However, the five Wish Master features make for a more than generous alternative to a typical free spin based bonus round!

One more thing that hasn’t yet been mentioned – if a scatter symbol happens to land whilst one or more wish master features are active in play, their activity counter will be reset back to the initial five in addition to adding one more wish to your current set!

For example, say you have two wild reels in play already on reels two and three that have already been active for four spins. If you now hit a further scatter symbol and the genie grants you a 3x multiplier, your next five spins will be played with both wild reels remaining in effect and the new 3x multiplier modifier on top.

Pros

  • A brilliant update to what was already a fantastic online slot.
  • A rare scenario where Megaways really adds to the potential of an existing title.
  • When a game doesn’t need a bonus round to make it compelling, you know that the developers have created something special!

Cons

  • It’s a shame you can only have three wishes in play, considering that the game utilises a six-reel configuration.
  • Whilst the game works great without a true bonus round, it really would have been the absolute icing on the cake if Red Tiger had chosen to add one on top!

Final Thoughts

I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed the original Wish Master online slot and would probably be going back to play it some more in the next few days if it wasn’t for the fact that this sequel bests it in every conceivable way. A true triumph for Red Tiger!
