When someone mentions Relax Gaming slots, I instantly think of high-quality, innovative games featuring exciting bonus rounds, along with their Dream Drop feature, where a ludicrous jackpot of up to €10,000,000 can be won. With that in mind, I’m naturally optimistic when one of their new releases drops onto my review list. Today’s is titled Totem Guardians, and it’s a medium volatility, six-reel, seven-row slot with an RTP of 96.10% and a potential maximum win of 5,000x.
Set amongst the graphic backdrop of a peaceful outdoor wilderness scene, the game 6×7 grid can be found. Initially, during the base game, the bottom three row sets are blocked off and can be unlocked by landing scatter symbols. This set-up influences the number of connected payways on offer, with a starting number of 446, rising to 1,193 ways once the full grid is active. Winning combinations are made by matching symbols from left to right, and, in an interesting twist, the symbols involved in the win are then removed, plus any of the same type on the reels that were not in the pay way, and added as multipliers to a display to the side of the grid. Any subsequent wins featuring that symbol type will then be multiplied by this accumulated value up to x100. In the bonus round, these values do not reset between spins, and the full reel set is fully unlocked from the start.
The standout feature of this title so far would appear to be the multiplier accumulation mechanism. It offers something a bit different to the norm, and not only does it spice things up from a multiplier angle, but it also helps clear space for further cascades to take place by removing non-connected matching symbol types from anywhere on the reels. My favourite slots from the developer are those that include multiple bonus games, all of which have a different style of play or unique features. One of those is Bill & Coin, which has three individual bonus rounds to enjoy, with the pick of those being the Sure Win game, where any win values are accumulated and paid again on each subsequent spin. Another is Net Gains, which again boasts three separate feature rounds to get stuck into, including a coin collection game, stacked wild free spins, and a sticky mystery symbol variant, all of which are capable of awarding a maximum win of 15,000x. It’s time to set our focus back on Totem Guardians now, and we’ll be moving over to the paytable next as we begin analysing its features in greater depth.
To receive the maximum payout value for each symbol, you’ll need to match a winning combination of six across the reels. The higher paying symbols are all totem characters, with the Red Eagle sitting at the top of the pole and returning 3x the total stake per way of six. Next, it’s the Yellow Bear at 1.2x, followed by the Green Wolf and Blue Yak, both worth 0.8x. Totem Guardians Slot Base Game
Totem Guardians operates on a 6×7 grid once all positions are open, but this only occurs during the bonus round or by collecting a series of scatter symbols in the base. At the start of a standard spin, the reels will be set in a 6×4 formation with 446 payways. As each row position is unlocked, this number increases to 707, 950, and finally, 1,193 once the full area is active. The connected ways system is in force, meaning that a winning combination is formed when symbols are matched from the leftmost reel, in adjacent reels, and either next to each other or one row position above or below the last symbol. Any symbols involved in the win are then removed, and all others fall to fill the gaps, with additional symbols dropping in from the top of the reels courtesy of the cascading reels mechanism.
Totem Multiplier
To the right side of the main reel set, a totem pole is displayed, built of images of symbols featured in the paytable. Symbols involved in a winning combination, plus any of the same type within view on the grid, will be removed from the reels and added to the relevant totem pole block. Each of these will add +1 to its block, which represents a multiplier value that can reach up to x100.
Any subsequent wins that involve a symbol that has accumulated a multiplier value will be multiplied by the current number displayed in its totem block. Each bonus scatter symbol that lands will boost the rate at which multipliers are collected. This value is displayed at the top of the totem pole, and begins at x1, increasing in increments of +1 for each scatter symbol, and will multiply the number of any symbols collected by its current value. Both the number of collected symbols and the boosted multiplier collection figure will be reset at the start of each base game spin; however, these values are carried across into the bonus feature.

Totem Guardians is another well-constructed, entertaining release from Relax Gaming. I especially enjoyed the multiplier collection mechanism, which increases player engagement and win potential in the base game and even more so in the bonus round, where values do not reset between spins. Ideally, I would have liked to have seen more than one bonus game, as Relax is usually so good at adding variety to its features. The one particularly surprising aspect of the game was the cost of the bonus buy. For a game that would appear to have such potential, 60x seems very low, but that’s a good thing, as not every player can afford the high bonus buy costs we see on some slots that reach over 400x to purchase.
