Totem Thunder Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
A totem is a spirit being, sacred object, or symbol that serves as an emblem of a group of people, such as a family, clan, lineage, or tribe. The word Totem is an anglicisation of the Ojibwe term for belief in tutelary spirits and deities. Similar concepts under different names and variations were practised by many other cultures worldwide and even amongst modern cultural movements such as the neo shamans, the New Age of Man, and the Mythopoetic Men’s Movement. These movements use “totem” terminology to identify with a tutelary spirit or spiritual guide personally but are generally seen as nothing more than cultural misappropriation. And now we get ready to be blown away by the all-important paytable, kicking off with a staggering … ah, 5x your stake for five wilds on a payline. Oh well, the “High Wins” section has to be filled with… well, high wins, doesn’t it? 5x your stake for five-of-a-kind of red foxes, 4x your stake for five purple… iguanas, right? Base Game & Modifiers
The base gameplay is a standard 5×3 paytable affair, wins paid left to right, 25 fixed pay lines, so far, so uninteresting, but we do have tumbling reels – all winning combinations are removed from the stack immediately and winnings are paid, which can then trigger several interesting modifiers:
Totems
The stack of totems – what you may well recognise as a Totem Pole, I would suggest, has five potential colours, which just so happen to match the colours of the four high-paying and four low-paying symbols. There is also an additional gold totem, which will come in handy later.
Totem Trance Modifier
After a win and subsequent tumble, the totem at the top of the pole described above will upgrade all corresponding low-paying symbols into high-paying symbols of the same colour. This could increase your chances of a win, and if it does, it will be a more significant win than it would have been due to the symbol upgrade. If the totem at the top of the pole is gold, however…
Golden Totem Trance Modifier
It’s party time! ALL low-value symbols will be upgraded to their higher-paying counterparts, once again, potentially – but not definitively – increasing your odds of a win. If you do hit one – or several – they are going to be worth substantially more in aggregate as no low-value symbols now exist on the reels!
Colour Multiplier Modifier
When symbols are upgraded via the totems, it will add +1 to the multiplier value of that colour shown on the secondary totem pole shown to the right of the reel set.
Obviously, the golden totem is especially valuable here as it will add +1 to all four colours simultaneously. These multipliers do not apply during the base game but are saved up for the Thunder Free Spins bonus round… it feels like a perfect time to talk about that, wouldn’t you agree?
Totem Thunder Slot Free Spins Feature
This is one of those games where the longer it takes for the bonus to drop, the more valuable it is – a beautiful trade-off, I would say, as it makes all that time spent cursing over missing that all-important third scatter worth it in the end. In the Totem Thunder video slot, three scatters award 10 spins, four awards 15 spins, and five will award you the maximum of 20 free spins.
Thunder Free Spins Feature
This is where you get to use all those lovely colour multipliers you built up during the base game; believe me; they really can improve things. Remember those shady 5x payouts – not so bad at 45x a line! You can also build your multipliers further during the Thunder free spins, and you will find they increase much faster in this mode. My best result during testing? 401x. Not bad at all!
Feature Buy
This is a bit pricey for my liking, to be honest, but I guess it all depends on how high you have built up your colour multipliers before invoking the free spins. If you could pay a bit more for a five scatter trigger, I’d be all over that option … as long as it didn’t cost my first born, of course, but sadly it’s just 150x, and your odds of hitting a four or five scatter trigger are just as low as in the base game. I did get four scatters once out of less than 20 attempts, though, so that doesn’t seem terrible in my view?
Totem Thunder Slot Review Final Thoughts
I’ll admit to having a soft spot for Quickspin… something about their graphic artists and UX designers speaks to me as a former web designer. Totem Thunder is an excellent example of how a modern slot should be done … a perfect trade-off between the heartbreak of waiting for a bonus round and the knowledge that when it does arrive, you stand an excellent chance of a chunky win if you have been waiting an incredibly long time.
