Game Overview

Ah, Lucksome, a developer after my own heart! Treasures of the Dead (pay attention, Play’N’Go!) appears to be nothing more than another Book of Dead clone upon first glance but dig a little deeper, and you will soon discover that it’s actually a much more interesting proposition. The game does feature the same ten fixed paylines as Play’N’Go’s smash hit and also boasts a similar RTP of 96.2%, but the top win of 15,000x is triple that which could be won in Book.

Let’s start by discussing the things that have stayed the same; a book acts as both the wild and scatter symbols, and the main bonus round still features a special expanding wild that will grow to cover the entire reel where it lands. Now here’s where the two feature sets diverge; the scarab beetle printed on the front of the book scatter symbol can come alive, activating so-called ‘Hyperlines’ when it does! Okay, I wasn’t expecting that! These hyperlines are mapped to the games three horizontal pay lines, and any winning combinations that form on them will be boosted by a large multiplier shown to the right of each row. A bonus buy facility has also been included here, which was not available in Book of Dead.

I’ve been testing this slot extensively over the past day and have concluded that this is a very solid update to a well-established online slot formula. Check it out yourself with our free demo slot of Treasures of the Dead, available to play below:

Treasures Of The Dead Slot Paytable
Treasures of the Dead slot paytable

The original Book of Dead online slot was heavily based on Novomatic’s classic slot machine Book of Ra, which was not yet widely available at online casinos at the time. Book of Dead was wildly successful for Play’N’Go, who have since tried to replicate its success many times with sequels such as Legacy of Dead. Of course, whenever a slot becomes as wildly popular as Book, other developers will be quick to create their own clone slots in an attempt to share (or perhaps steal!) the hype and profits created by the attention that the game is generating. Treasures of the Dead may look similar to Book, but it’s a far more generous slot that is much more interesting to play.

The Book and Explorer symbols share the top spot on the paytable in Treasures of the Dead, both offering a return of 200x the total bet for a full payline of five of a kind. The Golden King Tut Mask will pay half as much at 100x for all five symbols, whilst the freaky-looking dude with a giant green gem around his neck is worth half as much again at 50x for a complete payline. The final high-paying spot goes to a Nile Valley Egyptian Cat, who will top up your balance with 50x your current stake for a five of a kind winning combination. The paytable’s lower half comprises five royals, which share identical payouts of 5x the total bet for a complete payline.

The betting range available in this machine is more comprehensive than most, with minimum/maximum wager limits of €0.10 and €200.00 per spin, respectively. Lucksome has also chosen to include plenty of intermediate bets between the two extremes, which is good to see in an age where most slot providers are reducing flexibility in this aspect of their games.

Base Game & Modifiers

Treasures Of The Dead Slot Base Game
Treasures of the Dead slot base game

Treasures of the Dead base game utilises a traditional 5×3 reel set, along with ten fixed paylines. Most winning combinations require at least three matching symbols on a payline starting from the leftmost reel to award a prize, but the book and explorer symbols also have a payout for just two matches on adjacent reels.

The book symbol acts as both the wild and scatter in this game, meaning that scatter symbols will never act as blockers in Treasures of the Dead.

Hyperlines

Paylines one, two, and three are mapped to the three horizontal rows of the game’s playfield. Whenever a book lands on one of these paylines, there is a chance that it will spawn a scarab beetle which is then collected against that row. When three scarabs are collected on a single row, the corresponding hyperline will be activated.

Each hyperline has an ascending multiplier displayed on the right of the corresponding row. A hyperline will only deactivate after a win has been awarded against it. When this occurs, the payout for that line will be multiplied by the value shown on that row.

Treasures Of The Dead Slot Bonus Features

Treasures Of The Dead Slot Free Spins Feature
Treasures of the Dead slot free spins feature

The main bonus round is triggered by hitting three or more scattered book symbols anywhere on the reel set. Ten free spins are always awarded regardless of the number of triggering scatter symbols; however, a larger cash prize of up to 200x the total stake is awarded for a five-scatter trigger.

Free Spins

Before each bonus round begins, a random symbol is selected from the paytable to act as the special expanding symbol for the duration of the feature. Special expanding symbols do not need to be adjacent to one another to form a winning combination in this part of the game. Hitting three or more scattered book symbols whilst the feature is in play will add ten free spins to your remaining total.

In this mode, all three hyperlines are permanently activated for the duration of the free game’s bonus. Wins that result from the selected special expanding symbol are guaranteed to payout on all ten paylines, ensuring you will receive a multiplied win on all three hyperlines each time.

Bonus Buy

The bonus buy menu available in this game adds several possibilities that cannot be encountered during regular play, which may lead to disappointment among players who cannot take advantage of this feature.

The available choices are as follows:

  • X-Plosive: The most volatile option costs 100x the normal price per spin and awards between five and fifteen free spins with a minimum of four scarabs added to the playfield before the bonus round begins.
  • Delux: For 300x the normal price per spin, you can guarantee yourself at least ten free spins with four scarabs added to the reels before your first bonus spin.
  • Double Lux: The most expensive option ratchets up the cost to a whopping 500x the normal price per spin but offers between ten and twenty free spins in return. At least five scarabs will be added to the playfield before the feature begins, and there is also a second chance guarantee feature that will award a second set of free spins if the final outcome is lower than 80x the current bet.

Pros

  • A bigger jackpot than most "book of" slots.
  • Above average RTP.

Cons

  • It's yet another book slot.

Treasures of the Dead Slot Review Final Thoughts

The addition of a bonus buy facility and hyperlines somehow manages to make what is effectively just another Book of Dead clone feel fresh and new. Is it enough to dethrone Play'n Go's classic Book of Dead? I don't think so, but it's a great game nonetheless.
