True Grit Redemption (Nolimit City) Slot Demo & Review

Nolimit City’s final release of 2021 was rumoured to be a special one, but the details were shrouded in secrecy until late November. Titled “True Grit Redemption”, the game would be a gangster-themed slot with this developer’s trademark high variance and RTP (96.11% / 94.04% casino-selectable), and a maximum payout of over 20,000x your stake. Would you have expected anything less from these guys?!

True Grit Redemption online slot takes many of its design cues from the Megaways series of games, tweaking the formula just enough to make it unique in its own right. We have a primary 6×4 reel area, but just three extra slots along the top instead of four, combined with transforming and nudging symbols, the xWays and xSplit features used in other Nolimit slots, all stirred in with a sprinkle of unique modifiers, two free spin modes, and a bonus buy option.

Nolimit seems to enjoy making their slots as complex as possible, and their keeping with that tradition again here with True Grit Redemption. If you like Nolimit’s offerings then True Grit Redemption video slot is 100% going to appeal to you, along with the younger crowd or any fan of Rockstar’s legendary video games. The big question though, is of course: Is it any good? Let’s investigate!

Paytable For True Grit Redemption Slot

The name “True Grit Redemption” is clearly intended to instil visions of the legendary Red Dead Redemption series of video games – there’s no way that the name of this game and its themes just happen to be a series of strange coincidences! Paying homage to a successful homage isn’t a bad thing, as long as it’s not straight-up plagiarism or worse still, a lame cash grab based on intellectual property that doesn’t even belong to you. Obviously then, what we have here is yet another Wild West themed slot, but it’s an interesting one with many unique features. The graphics could be better though, which feels like a strange complaint to make about a Nolimit City slot. The animation is buttery smooth on the other hand, and the sound is pleasant enough – I especially liked the tracks used during the features, but sadly, the constant gunfire sound effects soon had me reaching for the mute button.

The “Grit Girl” symbol acts as the games scatter and appears only in the “main reel” as the paytable calls it. By this, they are referring to the four reels located below the additional three spaces at the top, a la Megaways style, but in this game in the main reel area is also cut off diagonally during the base game meaning there are only four potential reels for the grit girl to land on. Three grit girls pay out 25x your stake immediately, whereas four will award you an instant payoff of 500x your bet. We’ve come to expect the paytable to be a little rough on these many-ways type slot machines, but the situation is particularly acute here – just 1.75x your stake for the top cowboy, dropping to a 1.35x, 1.1x, 0.95x, and 0.85x for the remaining picture symbols. Rough indeed.

For a game with a maximum payout of over 20,000x your bet, any casino running this one at the maximum bet spread available during demo mode had best be prepared should a lucky punter beat the six million to one odds of a full jackpot – the minimum bet is just €0.20, whilst the maximum is 500 times higher at €100.00 a spin. Only the brave will participate at those sorts of stakes – and that applies to both the casino and any player with the bankroll to fund it. No matter what stakes you choose to play, be sure to seek out the 96%+ RTP version of this game. You’d be amazed how much a difference of just 2% can make when it comes to slot RTP’s.

Base Game & Modifiers

Play With 6 Reels, Unlimited Paylines, And Win Up To 20,220x Your Bet In Nolimit City's True Grit Redemption Online Slot

During the base game, a triangle of slots remains locked at all times in the bottom right hand corner of the reel set. These ten slots will open up during the free spin features, with the bottom-right position reserved exclusively for the very best “Dead Spins” feature.

This leaves a somewhat strange 6×4 layout with only 14 available spaces open for standard symbols to fall into. Wins are paid left-to-right in pay ways fashion (as opposed to pay lines), guaranteeing that there is a minimum of 240 ways to win at all times. The secret sauce here is that, like many other Nolimit City titles, the individual spaces can randomly divide into up to three separate identical symbols on a per-spin basis.

It’s unclear if every symbol can divide into three on a single spin – if this was the case, the 14 usable spots would be tripled to 42, and the initial 240 ways made up of 4x5x4x3 could potentially be increased to 12x15x12x9 = 19,440 pay ways. That’s awfully close to the claimed maximum win figure as a multiple of stake, so it seems much more likely that there is some unadvertised limit to the number of pay ways that can be activated. For now, the maximum number of ways offered by the True Grit Redemption online slot remains a mystery. We do know much more about the mods available during the base game, however:

Wild Transform Feature

A fairly simple one here – if any symbol in the top row of three matches a picture symbol displayed in the column directly underneath it, both symbols will be transformed into wild symbols. During testing, we had one particularly lucky spin where this happened on all three reels at once resulting in a monster base game hit that paid on several hundred ways at once!

Cascading Reels Feature

A staple of many online slots these days, cascading reels have become a category in their own right over the past decade or so, but in our opinion, they are even better when combined in a game with a multitude of other features as well. Just in case you aren’t fully understanding, this means that any wins you hit will be immediately removed from the screen and new symbols allowed to drop into view to fill their place. This allows you to win infinite times from a single spin.

Xways Feature

The regular xWays symbols appear only in the top row of three, whilst the infectious xWays symbols are reserved for the main reel area instead. When the regular xWays symbol appears, it and a handful of other symbols in the main reel area will be swapped out for matching symbols. On its own, this is often unimpressive, but when combined with several wilds in the main area or a wild transform symbol or two, the regular xWays can pay big.

Infectious Xways Feature

Even more lucrative are the infectious xWays, which cause all matching picture symbols to split into two or three way symbols. This can dramatically increase the number of pay ways in effect, and just like with the regular xWays, works its magic best when in combination with regular xWays and Wild Transform modifiers at the same time. Things get pretty crazy in Nolimit City games, and the infectious xWays modifier has near limitless amounts of potential to create amazing wins.

Transform’em Feature

Whilst reels can divide into two or three segments randomly on any spin, the transform’em feature forces this to happen by way of a special symbol that appears only on the bottom row. A maximum of two symbols per reel will be carved into two by the Transform’em Feature, with the added benefit that if you should land three or four Grit Girl symbols on the same spin, their payoff will be doubled up to a maximum of 1,000x your stake!

True Grit Redemption Slot Bonus Features

Trigger 2 Exciting Free Spin Features When You Play True Grit Redemption Video Slot

With so many modifiers already in the base game, you’d expect Nolimit City to have something pretty special up their sleeve for the free spins modes – and of course, you would be right. There are two, named the Torture Spins and the Dead Spins. Guess which one has the highest payout potential? We never said these guys were merciful or humane, did we?

Torture Spins

Scatter symbols land on reels one through four, though sadly do not have any payout attached to them on their own. Three scatter symbols awards the torture spins, whilst four award you the higher payout potential dead spins instead.

Unfortunately, the reel split symbol does not upgrade torture spins to dead spins, but you do receive an additional torture spin for any scatter symbols which happen to land on a column where the reel split symbol (Transform’em Feature) is also active does at least grant you an additional free spin. Unfortunately, this only applies once no matter how many cascading wins you score before your torture spins begin.

Once in torture spins mode, the previously locked areas of the main 6×4 reel area will be opened up, vastly increasing your opportunities for high pay-way wins. The only exception to this is the final bottom-right spot which remains locked in all modes except dead spins. Should you manage to catch a fourth scatter at any point during torture spins, your remaining free spins will be upgraded to dead spins.

Dead Spins

Four scatters directly from the base game award a minimum of ten dead spins with a 3x multiplier active, and, just like the torture spins, additional free spins can be added to your total before the bonus starting if the reel split symbol happens to land at the same time as the scatter symbols.

This is the only mode where you have the maximum potential 4x5x5x5x4x4 reel area available to you – a minimum of 8,000 pay ways per spin!

Bonus Buy Feature

A final note – there are three bonus buy options in True Grid Redemption. You can opt to buy straight into the torture spins for 69x your stake, or go truly crazy and pay 669x your stake to head straight into the dead spins. That’s a pretty incredible number and by far the most expensive feature buy we have seen to date.

If you are feeling lucky you can pay 189x your stake for an 80/20 shot instead. Considering that the dead spins cost 10x more than the torture spins to buy outright, this is actually a really good deal. You stand a one in five shot of getting the dead spins, and even if you fail, you still get your torture spins anyway.
