True Kult (Nolimit City) Slot Demo & Review

How much difference there truly is between mainstream religions and religious cults is perhaps one of the most unsuitable topics of conversation you could imagine discussing over polite company at the dinner table. As a result, taboo topics such as cults are far less widely understood than those which are frequently discussed and debated by society at large. When stories about cults break through into the mainstream, you can be sure that the details will be shocking at best; downright terrifying at worst. Of course, Nolimit City is no stranger to the controversial, downright weird, and taboo, so if anybody was going to create a cult-themed slot, you could have guessed it would be them! The game is titled True Kult, a 243-way machine with a 96.06% RTP and a maximum jackpot prize of 23,237x the player’s total bet.

Many games by Nolimit City are packed to bursting with special features, but my first impressions of this one were that the developer had decided to be a little more restrained on this occasion. We do get mystery symbols, an extra reel that can be unlocked by landing two or more scatter symbols, and two different main bonus rounds, plus a handful of additional features that are only possible when the sixth reel has already been unlocked. The xBet bonus bet option dramatically increases the odds of triggering these features in return for a tripling of the normal price per spin.

You have to wonder if Nolimit City had any particular inspiration when deciding to make a game based on the idea of a cult. I can think of a few candidates, but all of them are far too “spicy” to discuss here! On that note, I’ll leave you with our True Kult demo slot, available to play below.

True Kult Paytable
True Kult paytable

I’m relatively certain that there are no existing cult-themed slots to compare this game to – any occurrences of ‘cult’ in our database are certain to be matching the term ‘cult-classic’ (e.g. The Goonies and Kiss My Chainsaw) or perhaps something as simple as just “popular culture”. The latter game is another NlLimit release, and it’s quite interesting to compare the two as I really didn’t feel that the artwork in True Kult was up to the usual standards that I would associate with Nolimit City. The character symbols look quite poorly drawn, in my opinion, and the royals seem especially ‘cheap’ – that’s just my take though, and as we all know, graphics are far from the most important thing when it comes to online slots.

Payouts certainly are one of the most important things though, and the highest-paying of the “true believer” character symbols available in True Kult returns just 5x the total bet for a full payway of six of a kind. It’s probably best to stick to the five of a kind figures though, as the sixth reel is not unlocked during regular play – therefore, the next best symbol pays just 4x, with the remaining characters offering maximum returns of 3x, 2.5x, 2x and 1.5x. Those would be low returns for a Megaways slot, but they are downright alarming for a game with just 243 payways in my view. Of course, the royals are even worse – five tens will return your stake, with the remaining symbols offering only slightly more up to a maximum of 1.25x for five aces.

With the xBet option disabled, your available betting range runs from €0.20 to €100.00 per spin, with more than enough other bets permitted in between those limits to satisfy all players. Enabling the xBet triples those limits, meaning you’ll have to pay at least €0.60 per spin to play.

Base Game & Modifiers

True Kult Base Game
True Kult base game

Most of your time spent playing True Kult will take place on a standard five-reel, three-row video slot layout spanned by 243 payways. Winning combinations require at least three matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left, but the biggest wins can only be achieved by first hitting two scatter symbols and unlocking the sixth reel. Should you manage to do this, you’ll expand the playfield to 6×3 positions along with 729+ pay ways.

Baptism By Fire

This is just a fancy name for mystery symbols, but they do at least always appear as stacks of symbols as well as promising to transform into random high-paying symbols rather than just any old item picked from the paytable. Mystery symbols can also reveal scatter symbols during the base game or skull wilds during the two bonus rounds.

Reel Six

There are no scatter symbols on the first reel, but they are present on reels 2-5 at all times as well as on reel six after that has been unlocked. When two scatters do land on reels 2-5, they will immediately open the extra reel for the current spin, which allows for bigger winning combinations as well as extra features:

  • True Believer Wilds: Randomly turns low-paying card symbols on reels two through five into wild symbols before transforming into a high-paying true believer symbol.
  • Tarot Multipliers: These are way-multiplying symbols that can significantly improve the value of winning combinations. They may have values of 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, or 99x, and if they do not form part of a winning combination immediately upon landing, they will be collected for use during the bonus modes.

Xbet

Enabling the xBet option will triple the cost of every spin as well as increase the RTP slightly up to a maximum of 96.14%. More importantly, you are now four times more likely to activate the three-scatter Séance free spins and more than six times as likely to activate the more valuable four-scatter Sacrifice free spins.

True Kult Slot Bonus Features

True Kult Free Spins Feature
True Kult free spins feature

Landing three scatter symbols during regular play will award seven free spins of The Séance bonus mode, whilst four scatters will grant you ten free spins in the more valuable The Sacrifice bonus feature. Landing a scatter on reel six during The Séance free spins will upgrade your remaining free spins to Sacrifice spins.

The Séance Free Spins

At the start of this bonus mode, three “all-seeing eyes” will be activated, and all symbols that land within their field of view will be split into dual symbols. The “all-seeing eyes” will move randomly across reels 2-5 on every spin. The sixth reel is always open during this mode but contains only true believer symbols and tarot multipliers.

The mystery symbols may transform into skull wilds during the bonus rounds, adding one free spin to your remaining counter and granting an additional “all-seeing eye”. If a skull wild lands within the view of an eye, it will turn into a double wild but will not award any additional all-seeing eyes.

The Sacrifice Free Spins

Despite having a different name, as far as I could tell, the main difference between this mode and the previous one is simply that you begin with four “all-seeing eye” frames rather than just three. After a little more play, I also noticed that tarot multiplier symbols are sticky in this mode as well and will be saved for the remainder of the free spins whenever the same true believer symbol is revealed on later spins.

The description of this mode in the paytable is a little cryptic and convoluted – it’s much easier to understand once you have actually played through it a couple of times!

Bonus Buy

Players who can utilise the feature buy menu can choose from the following options.

  • The Séance Free Spins: Cost 68x bet.
  • The Sacrifice Free Spins: Cost 400x bet.
  • Lucky Draw: Cost 234x bet with a 50/50 chance of being awarded either feature.

Pros

  • Yet another unusual and highly controversial topic tackled in slot machine form by Nolimit City.
  • Lots of special features, but not so many that you’ll need to play the game for months to experience them all!
  • The jackpot of 23,237x is higher than most other online slots.

Cons

  • Paytable prizes are very low, even when the sixth reel is unlocked.
  • As with most Nolimit City games, this is variance at its most extreme – most of your sessions are sure to end in bankruptcy!

Final Thoughts

I always look forward to new releases by Nolimit City, and I enjoyed testing this one despite not being overly impressed by its visuals or paytable. In comparison to other games from this developer, however, True Kult is simply unremarkable – it’s a harsh reality, but when you have games out there with 300,000x jackpots, it’s always going to be hard to impress with a game that offers more than twelve times less! Fans of Nolimit will still probably love it though.
