Valhall Gold (Elk Studios) Slot Demo & Review

Okay, I’ll admit it: I wasn’t sure what the meaning of Valhall was, but thanks to our trusty search engine friend Google, I can save you the trouble of searching and tell you that Valhall is an anglicised form of Old Norse Valhǫll, an afterlife “hall of the slain” in Norse mythology, which is more commonly anglicised as Valhalla. Now the admin is out of the way, let’s talk about the game. The Valhall Gold slot is an ELK Studios title with 6-reels, a below-average RTP of 94%, and a maximum win of 25,000x bet.

ELK Studios loves to pack its games with features, and its Valhall Gold slot is certainly no different! There are four modifiers capable of multiplying your win, enabling pay-both-way mechanics, adding a whole bunch of spikes to the grid (trust me, they are useful!), or the Axe Fury mod upgrades all occurrences of a random symbol to match another that he random determines. Thor acts as the game’s wild, but you can also score some wilds if two of Odin’s Ravens land on the reels. The aforementioned spike symbol will fire off in a random direction if it is part of a winning combination, adding the value of each symbol that it passes through to your win. And as if all that wasn’t enough, there are giant symbols here too – 2×2, 3×3, and 4×4 symbols that can appear anywhere on the reels. Of course, you also get the X-iter bonus buy facility with five different options to choose from.

Fancy a blast on ELK Studios’ latest? I have to say, these games are questionably more than slots – they have so much going on it’s crazy! Check it out yourself with our free Valhall Gold slot demo, available to play below.

Norse Mythology has made its way into dozens of online slots, sometimes related to Valhalla, as with this game and Power of Gods Valhalla, whilst a whole host of others concentrate specifically on Thor or his brothers Zeus and Poseidon. Developers have generally done well to integrate these myths into their games, producing some true classics such as Thunderstruck 2. Valhall Gold plays entirely differently from those games, however, and I have to say, I really like this one. Is it better than TS2? Ahhhh…. I can’t work that one out, I’m afraid!

On to the payouts, we get 5x the bet for the highest-paying male character, then 3x for the animal’s head. Next is the horse, which pays 2.5x, just the same as the owl positioned next to it. The medium pays feature various knight insignias – the reds and purples will get you 1x for a full payway, whilst the green and blue are slightly less valuable at 0.8x. Finally, there are four runes used for the low pays; they are easy to spot, and they all pay 0.3x when a line of them hits.

Betting options are typically limited in true ELK Studios fashion. You can play for just €0.20 if you’re a low roller, and there’s a couple of options before you even reach €1.00. Things ramp up quickly after that though, and if you want to play the €100.00 maximum, you may find the lower bets barely worth bothering with, as there are only a couple before you’re back down to €20.

Valhall Slot Base Game

Valhall Gold Base Game
Valhall Gold base game

If you’ve played a few ELK games recently, you can’t fail to have noticed that the gameplay is overall quite similar. The developer seems to have settled on this style, whereby blocks of any size drop into the grid, and it is possible to unlock additional lines and payways as follows:

4 Rows (Standard) 1,024 Payways 5 Rows 15,625 Ways to Win 6 Rows 46,656 Ways to Win 7 Rows 117,649 Ways to Win 8 Rows 262,144 Ways to Win 9 Rows 531,441 Ways to Win

To unlock these additional rows, you need to hit a winning combination where a part of one of your symbols is sitting above the current “safety line.” This will then grant you the extra row of symbols.

Super Blocks

All low, medium, and high-paying symbols exist in four sizes, including giant blocks of 2×2, 3×3, and 4×4. These symbols are counted as the number of positions they occupy; Wild symbols can also appear as Super Blocks.

Odin’s Ravens

The ravens are small symbols of 1×2 in size and drop in as blockers. They activate and turn into wilds when two or more are simultaneously in view.

Spikes

Spikes are unique wild symbols as when they land, they point their spike at the nearest large symbol.

Loki

Loki is a blocker symbol of size 2×2 that provides different features for each win evaluation. Loki will not appear unless a win has been achieved, but when he does, he will be activated for the rest of the round. Loki performs various features prior to the win evaluation:

  • Loki Multiplier: A multiplier –of 2x, 3x, 5x, or 10x is applied to the base game win. Loki’s multiplier is additive to any saved multiplier during the base game.
  • Loki Both Ways: Activates a win evaluation from both both left and right.
  • Loki Spike Storm: Adds a random number of spike frames on existing symbols in view which turn them into spike symbols.
  • Loki Axe Fury: upgrades a random number of symbols in view into the same symbol.

Thor

The Thor wild is a 2×2 wild symbol that is sticky during a single drop.

Valhall Slot Bonus Features

Valhall Gold Free Spins Feature
Valhall Gold free spins feature

The bonus feature on ELK’s Valhall Gold slot is triggered when 3 ,4, 5 or 6 scatters land in view with players being awarded 10, 15, 20, and 25 free spins respectively. The free drops bonus game always starts with the safety level being set to 5 rows after the first winning free drop.

Free Drops Feature

During the bonus, every winning drop advances the safety level one row to a maximum of eight rows. The ninth row is only opened up from a large symbol extending into it, in which case the remainder of the free drops is played at nine rows.

Three or more bonus symbols landing during the feature re-trigger additional free drops, with the number of drops awarded being determined in the same way the feature was initially triggered. The bonus will end when no further free drops remain.

X-iter Feature

If the X-iter feature is active in your jurisdiction you can choose from the 5 following game modes.

  • Bonus Hunt: 2x bet for one drop with more than double the chance to trigger the feature.
  • Big Block: 5x bet for one drop with a guaranteed big symbol.
  • Trickster Loki: 25x bet for one drop with a guaranteed Loki symbol.
  • Bonus: 100x guarantees entry into the bonus round.
  • Super Bonus: 500x guarantees entry into the super bonus with a minimum of 10 drops and Loki’s inventory fully active.

Pros

  • Nice jackpot of 25,000x bet.
  • A good solid addition to their Gold Series of games.

Cons

  • Some may feel the gold series has now run its course.
  • The RTP of 94% is below average.

Final Thoughts

ELK's Gold series of slots has been fairly impressive, with Pacific Gold and Voodoo Gold being particular favourites of mine. As for their Valhall Gold slot, whilst it may not fall into the epic category, it's a decent release that will please the ELK fanbase and keep them busy spinning until they conjure up their next idea for the franchise.
