From the moment you see that “large” lady on her rocking horse, you know that this will be one seriously quirky release by Peter & Sons. The main game screen isn’t quite so bizarre, however, it’s a ten-pay line game with a 96% RTP, whilst the maximum win is stated as being “up to 20000 your bet per spin” on the paytable. The English used in that statement isn’t very good, and an examination of the game’s help files reveals that a win of 20,000x the current stake occurred once during a billion-round simulation.
Many of the game’s best features are only activated during the bonus round, which you can either purchase using the bonus buy facility or win organically by hitting three scatters in the base game. Either way, you will receive ten free spins with the so-called “Power Reel”, “Dropping Wilds”, and “Locking Wilds” features, along with the chance to re-trigger the feature if more scatters land on the reels. A couple of features can be activated during the base game, but there’s no question that the bonus round is the quickest way to land a huge win in Valkyries.

Valkyries Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
According to the game’s rules, the Valkyries gather at the gates of Valhalla to welcome their fallen heroes. As they sing their battle cry, they lead their souls to the hall of the slain, where the rewards await! That’s what Peter & Sons has to say about the theme of their slot, but just what are they talking about? In Norse mythology, the word “Valhalla” refers to the hall of the slain, but the term is regularly used to describe a form of heaven or paradise reserved for only the bravest and most loyal soldiers. Norse mythology and Valhalla have become a common theme for online slots over the years, the most recent examples of which include Power of Gods Valhalla and Gods of ASGard Megaways.
The highest paying symbol on the paytable is the bonus scatter, but the return of just 20x your bet for all five symbols seems a little on the tight side, especially when you factor in just how rare such a combination is. Next, there are a pair of longship symbols – one red, one blue, both of which sport a multiplier and a return of 12x the current bet for a full pay line of five-of-a-kind. Moving on to the regular symbols, the male Viking character has the highest return at 11x your bet for all five, followed by the brunette female who pays 10x, the black-haired, Egyptian-looking lady at 9x, and the redhead at 8x your bet. The last of the high-paying symbols is a young-looking Valkyrie, who follows the established pattern with a return of 7x for five-of-a-kind.

The lowest amount permitted per spin is just €0.10, which should please the low roller crowd, whilst the maximum bet of €50.00 is likely to be more than enough for those at the other end of the spectrum.
Base Game & Modifiers
The base game of Valkyries takes place on a five reel, three row playfield with ten fixed paylines. The game includes many features, some of which can be triggered during the base game whilst others are reserved for the bonus round only. You’ll need at least three matching symbols to score yourself a win, but the biggest wins can only be awarded with the aid of one or more of the following features.
Dropping Wilds Modifier
These symbols can randomly appear on any reel during the base game and will stay in their position at the beginning of the next spin. Before the reels stop again, the dropping wild symbol will move down one position – this is not a free re-spin feature, so you will need to pay for the subsequent spins, but at least you are guaranteed a wild on the reels.
If the dropping wild is active on a spin which triggers the power reel (detailed below), then the symbol will move back to the top position of the reel. These symbols can also include a random multiplier of up to 10x.
Power Reel
Hitting two scatter symbols anywhere on the reels will trigger a free re-spin with the Wild Reel feature activated. The wild reel is a horizontal reel that appears below the regular playfield and contains several modifiers which can be applied to the current spin, including the Dropping Wilds feature mentioned above and a separate locking wild feature which makes all wild symbols sticky whenever the power reel is visible.
Wild Overlap
If a dropping wild symbol overlaps a locking wild created by the Power Reel feature, the two wilds will merge, and their multipliers will be added together. These overlaps can also occur due to several other situations, such as a dropping wild moving onto the reel below or the power reel feature creating a new wild symbol on top of an existing one.
Valkyries Slot Bonus Features
The primary bonus round is a free spins feature that awards ten spins whenever three scatter symbols appear during the main game. Let’s take a more detailed look below at how this bonus round plays out.
Free Spins
During this mode, the power reel feature will be activated for the duration of the feature, guaranteeing that at least one modifier will be active on every one of your free spins. The wild overlap feature is much more likely to activate during the bonus round due to the constantly activated power reel. Any locking wilds that the Power Reel creates will add two free spins to your remaining total.
Bonus Buy
If it is permitted within your jurisdiction, you can opt to skip the base game and go directly to the free spin bonus for a cost of 74x the regular bet. This seems like a very fair price to me, and my results during testing suggest that you are likely to make a profit at least half of the time when you use this option. I didn’t score any enormous wins while playing the game, but I would still choose to use this facility if it was available to me in real money mode.

I’m not a big fan of Valkyries' graphics and style, but I had a lot of fun while playing the slot. The winnings I observed probably weren’t enough to make me choose to play this game over my current favourites, but I’d recommend that other players give it a try and see if you enjoy it more than I did.
