Game Overview

There’s a ton of great slot developers out there working their magic, but one of my favourites has to be Hacksaw Gaming due to how consistently good their slots are upon release. The studio has a distinctive art style, typically avoids cheesy themes, and generally creates titles with a playability factor many other studios struggle to match. The latest off the conveyor belt is Wings of Horus, a 5×6 slot with 7,776 ways to win, a 96.33% RTP, and a 15,000x the stake maximum win.

There isn’t a lot going on in the base game, with the only features of note being Orb symbols that can upgrade regular symbols to wilds and an instant win of 500x the stake that’s achieved when HORUS is spelt using the low-paying symbols. Those Orbs also come into play in the slot’s two free spins bonuses. Each contains a progression system that collects winning combinations and adds Orbs, which are added to the reels on the final spin. I probably don’t have to tell Hacksaw fans this, but there are also a few buy bonus options to consider.

Hacksaw Gaming is one of those developers worth getting excited about when they release a new slot, especially when it’s a follow-up to one of their better releases. The Wings of Horus slot demo below lets you check it out for free.

Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Wings of Horus is the follow-up to Hacksaw’s 2022 release, Hand of Anubis, another title that depicts Ancient Egyptian mythology in a way that no other developer does. It’s dark and gloomy, which is something that the studio excels at – just look at Cursed Crypt for another example. Hacksaw isn’t at ‘Nolimit’ levels of shock, but the studio comes closer than most, particularly in the scary sense. So, if you enjoyed Wings of Horus, they’re the two I suggest you check out next.

Until then, I guess we’d better clear up the paytable on Wings of Horus. The Purple Skull tops the charts with a 2x the stake return for five in a row, followed by the Green Skull, which pays up to 1.6x. Behind those are the Lotus Flower, with a maximum win of 1.2x, the Eye of Horus, which returns up to 1x, and the Ankh, which can deliver rewards of up to 0.8x. The low pays are the H, O, R, U, and S symbols, paying up to 0.50x, 0.40x, 0.40x, 0.30x, and 0.30x, respectively.

Ending with the betting selection, a typical Hacksaw Gaming staking range of €0.10 per spin up to €100.00 per spin can be found on Wings of Horus.

Base Game & Modifiers

Wings of Horus slot base game
Wings of Horus slot base game

At its core, Wings of Horus is a 5×4 slot that uses ways to win to calculate payouts, a mechanic that Hacksaw Gaming has not used often over the years. Across those reels, there are 7,776 ways to win, and winning combinations are created when three or more regular symbols or five wilds line up on consecutive reels from left to right.

Orb Symbol Modifiers

Two Orbs can appear on the reels, and when they land, they upgrade regular symbols.

  • Orb of the Moon Symbols: Transforms all instances of one randomly selected symbol into wilds.
  • Orb of the Sun Symbols: Transforms all instances of two randomly selected symbols into wilds.

Sacred Script Instant Win

If you’re lucky enough for the low-value symbols to land in such a way that they spell out HORUS horizontally across the reels, you’ll scoop a 500x the stake instant win.

Wings of Horus Slot Bonus Features

Wings of Horus slot free spins feature

Wings of Horus has two free spins bonus games, although technically, they’re the same, except one starts further along a progression feature. Let’s take a look at both.

Revenge of the Pharoah Free Spins

You’ll receive 10 free spins when three scatter symbols appear anywhere in view. The bonus has a progression element, with two meters to the side of the reels. The first increases whenever a winning combination is created, and the second moves up a level whenever the first fills up. It’s possible to raise that meter up to 4, with each level unlocked representing an Orb that appears on the final spin.

On that spin, depending on how many levels were unlocked, 1-4 of either of the Orb symbols is added to the reels. The only other thing to mention about the free spins bonus is that 2 or 3 scatter symbols landing will award an additional 2 or 4 free spins, respectively.

Rises of the Falcon Free Spins

The Rise of the Falcon free spins bonus will trigger once four scatter symbols appear anywhere in view. It is identical to the Revenge of the Pharoah free spins bonus, although it starts from level 2 on the progression trail.

Bonus Buy

As ever, Hacksaw Gaming has made sure to implement several buy bonus options:

  • BonusHunt FeatureSpins: For 3x the stake, each spin is 5 times more likely to trigger a free spins bonus.
  • Orby FeatureSpins: For 50x, each spin lands at least 2 Orb of the Moon or Orb of the Sun symbols.
  • Revenge of the Pharaoh Free Spins: 100x the bet
  • Rise of the Falcon Free Spins: 250x the bet

Pros

  • Fantastic visuals and soundtrack.
  • The usual selection of buy bonus options is available.

Cons

  • Hacksaw uses variable RTPs, so make sure you’re playing the best version at your chosen online casino.
  • The slot felt lacking, especially in the base game.

Wings of Horus Slot Review Final Thoughts

Wings of Horus stays true to the dark and immersive style Hacksaw Gaming fans have come to expect, but I must admit that the slot didn't blow me away like some others. It’s okay, don’t get me wrong, the base game felt flat, and the bonus games were nothing we hadn’t seen before. I’m slightly disappointed, as the visuals and audio deserved better gameplay.
