Wins Of Winter Slot (Fantasma Games) Slot Demo & Review

The latest product of Stockholm-based studio Fantasma Games is titled Wins of Winter, a nice-looking and well-presented online slot with a distinctly chilly feel about it. The main reel set is definitely not your typical slot layout, with three rows on the first and last reel, which grow larger in both directions as you move towards the tall, five-high centre reel. There are 20 fixed paylines spanning this odd-shaped playfield, a 96% RTP and a maximum win of 5,000x your bet.

A handful of special symbols are available to boost your chances of hitting a big win, starting with a bonus symbol on reels two, three, and four, all of which are needed to trigger the bonus game. That bonus game is a pick-me feature which awards between nine and 18 chances to pick gifts, each of which can be worth up to 20x your bet. A chest symbol appears only on reel five and has two possible outcomes; the progression feature, adding 3-6 points to your progression meter, and frozen frames, which are utilised in both the Winter Wild and Mirror features. These two bonuses are triggered using the snow scatter symbol, which will occasionally transform into a golden snow symbol to activate the feature.

Winter is definitely well on its way by now, which can be a depressing prospect for some people. Why not help to prepare yourself for the cold nights ahead by playing a few spins on our free demo slot of Wins of Winter? Who knows, perhaps a big bonus round will help to cheer you up!

Wins Of Winter Slot Paytable
Wins of Winter slot paytable

There are endless Christmas-themed slots released each year by almost every developer, but I don’t recall the coldest season itself getting anywhere near as much attention. That’s not to say there aren’t ANY winter or snow-themed games, of course! Who could forget the awesome 90K Yeti Gigablox, for example, a winter-themed game with the added bonus of an abominable snowman? Fans of simpler games will probably enjoy the fruit machine-styled Arctic Fruits, and if the presence of Santa and a bunch of Christmas-based symbols doesn’t bother you, there are hundreds more games with snow-covered backdrops out there to choose from.

However, it will take more than a bit of snow to pull me in, so how does the paytable stand up in Wins of Winter? First up, the wild and wizard symbols share the highest payout at 3.5x your bet for every completed payline. If that sounds a little low to you, then I share your view – the multiplier shown in the top-right corner of the screen gives you a clue as to why the numbers on the paytable might feel a little on the small side, but we’ll get to those shortly. Next, a red gem will pay you 2.5x your bet for each complete payline, whilst the yellow gem is worth 2x, the green gem is worth 1.5x, and, finally, the purple gem will pay you 1.25x your bet for every full set of five symbols. Despite the unimaginative appearance of those gem symbols, they are not the low-paying items in this game – there are five royal symbols on the reel strips as well, with payouts of either 1x or 0.75x your bet for all five symbols. Neither of the scatter symbols has any cash value either, unfortunately.

Hitting the stack of coins underneath the main spin button will open a quick bet selection window with 20 options varying from €0.20 per spin at the low end up to a crazy €160.00 per round at the other extreme.

Base Game & Modifiers

Wins Of Winter Slot Base Game
Wins of Winter slot base game

The base game plays much like any other online slot, with the crucial difference that the strangely shaped reel set makes it difficult to guess which combinations might result in a win and which will not. There are three rows on the first and last reels, four rows on reels two and four, and five on the centre reel, giving a total of 19 positions.

Snow Symbols & Progression Meter

The snow symbol is referred to as a scatter on the paytable, but that seems a little bit misleading to me. The symbol has no payout by itself and does not trigger a feature either. Instead, each time a snow symbol lands on the reels, it will be marked with a frozen frame. Additionally, one point will be added to the progression meter each time a snow symbol lands.

The progression meter will trigger various features when it reaches milestones such as 50, 100, or 150. When the meter does reach the final milestone of 150 points, the bonus game multiplier will increase by one, and the progression meter will be reset. The bonus game multiplier can reach a maximum of 100x but will be reset after the bonus game has been played, making it very unlike you will ever get close to a 100x multiplier! See the Winter Wild section below for more details regarding the frozen frames created by snow symbols.

Chest Symbol

The chest symbol only appears on the fifth reel and has two possible prizes hidden inside it. First, the chest may boost your progression meter by three to six points, which is the equivalent of waiting for six snow symbols to land on the reels.

Second, the chest could create between two and four additional frozen frames anywhere on the playfield. These frames will be retained until the winter wild feature is triggered, which is when they become useful.

Wins Of Winter Slot Bonus Features

Land Three Bonus Symbols In The Base Game To Trigger The Free Spins Feature On Wins Of Winter Slot
Wins of Winter slot bonus round

Wins of Winter does not include a typical free spin-based bonus round but has two alternative bonus features, which are arguably a little more interesting than the same old thing we usually see in every other online slot.

Wild Winter Feature

This feature is activated randomly after a snow symbol lands on the reels before transforming into the special golden snow symbol. Every snow symbol that lands before this will have created a frozen frame in the position where it landed, whilst the golden snow symbol creates a special golden frame.

The golden frame is immediately filled by a wild when the feature begins, along with any other adjacent positions that have a frozen frame around them. Frozen and Golden frames do not disappear from the reels until they have been transformed into wild symbols, and this mode also adds additional wild symbols to the reels as well, making it almost certainly the most profitable part of the game – especially when a multiplier has been activated by the progression meter.

Bonus Game

The bonus game is triggered by hitting all three available bonus scatters on reels two, three, and four. All winnings obtained within it are multiplied by the current bonus multiplier shown on the progression meter.

The bonus game will award you between nine and 18 clicks on the gift symbols which appear on the screen, each of which is worth between 0.5x and 20x your current stake. This gives an unmultiplied maximum win of 380x your bet or much higher if a multiplier is active.

The game’s introduction screen states that the maximum possible win is set at 5,000x your bet, so if you manage to reach a large multiplier before winning the bonus game, it should be possible to come somewhere close to that maximum available jackpot prize.

Wins Of Winter Slot Review Final Thoughts

The fact that the bonus game multiplier can reach 100x giving a theoretical maximum win of 38,000x, whilst the game has a cap of 5,000x on winnings, is a little bit disappointing in my eyes. If I was playing this game for real money and hit that cap easily due to having waited forever before the bonus was triggered, I can see myself feeling more than a little bit frustrated.

Despite this issue, I enjoyed playing Wins of Winter and appreciated the excellent presentation. I’d have scored this slot even better if the maximum win had been slightly higher. It’s still worth checking out, though, despite its shortcomings.
