Wish Upon A Jackpot Megaways Slot (Blueprint) Slot Demo & Review

The original Wish Upon a Jackpot from Blueprint Gaming was a massive hit for the developer, to the extent that you could even find the game in British casinos and bookmaker shops as well as the libraries of online casinos. A follow-up or sequel was always likely given that success, but Blueprint has thrown us a curveball by publishing a Megaways update to the existing game rather than creating a brand-new game. The first game utilised 20 paylines – an almost laughable number compared to the 64 – 117,649 payways in Wish Upon a Jackpot Megaways, and I’m also pleased to see that the RTP has been boosted to 95.99%, whilst the maximum win remains at 50,000x bet.

The ‘fairy godmother spin’ is back once again, which refers to the three base game modifiers that can trigger randomly during any spin. Whenever this feature activates, you’ll be asked to choose from three orbs to determine which modifier you will receive – the options have been updated since the first game and now include regular wild symbols, wild reels with multipliers of up to 7x, or the addition of up to a hundred mystery symbols. As for the main bonus round, the fairy tale books are gone in this release, replaced by the same orbs used in the base game’s fairy godmother spin feature. Picking an orb determines which of the three modifiers will be active during your free spins, which also benefit from an ascending multiplier that increases with each symbol cascade.

The fairy tale books may have been removed, but everything else about this update seems superior to the original game, in my opinion. Want to make up your own mind? Our free demo slot of Wish upon a Jackpot Megaways is available to play below.

Wish Upon A Jackpot Megaways Slot Paytable
Wish Upon a Jackpot Megaways slot paytable

Throughout this review, I have and will be talking a lot about the original Wish Upon a Jackpot online slot, so it’s only fitting that I link that game here. Blueprint has re-used most of that game’s assets in this release, and they still hold up surprisingly well, considering that it’s been almost a decade since it was first published. Nevertheless, it does feel a little lazy – the changes made when updating this game with Megaways are significant enough that a fresh coat of paint would have been easy to justify.

Some areas of the game have been updated in line with contemporary standards, however, including the paytable of the game, which now shows prizes as multiplies of the current stake. The game logo symbol is the most valuable of the bunch and offers payouts of 25x the total bet for a full payway of six of a kind, much more than the 5x return provided by the second-place Disney castle symbol. The glass slipper and magical harp both share equal payouts of 2x for all six symbols, which just leaves the six low-paying royals. I always feel that it’s a tad unfair when slots include many more low-paying symbols than high-paying ones, but on a positive note, there isn’t much of a gap between the returns of each group. Six aces, kings, or queens will add 1x the total bet to your bankroll, whilst six jacks, tens, or nines return a little less at 0.5x each.

As for the betting range, I’m sorry to say that this aspect of the game is even more restrictive this time around, with minimum/maximum wager limits of €0.20 and €10.00 per spin, respectively. However, players shouldn’t have too much of a problem finding a stake to play at between these amounts.

Base Game & Modifiers

Wish Upon A Jackpot Megaways Slot Base Game

The majority of Megaways slots feature similar mechanics. Wish Upon a Jackpot Megaways does away with the horizontal reel present in many such games, but otherwise, it’s the same six-reel, up to seven-row design that you will probably be used to. The game logo symbol offers a small prize for just two symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left-hand side, whilst every other symbol requires a minimum of three.

Cascading Reels

Whenever you come across a Megaways title in a 117,649 payline format, it is almost a given that the game will include the cascading reels engine. With this mechanic in action, all symbols that form part of a winning combination will be eliminated from the reels, and new symbols will fall to fill the gaps that have been left. This will continue until there are no further winning connections on the reels.

If the fairy godmother appears on the screen during a round, there’s a chance that you may be about to receive a special spin! The key word here is chance, unfortunately, as you’ll often see this insensitive auntie showing up just to tease you, which is really quite mean, in my opinion – and annoying! Assuming you are lucky though, a ‘pick me’ phase will activate with four orbs to choose from:

  • Pigs Can Fly: Turns several random positions into wilds.
  • Golden Arrow Mystery: Up to 100 mystery symbols are added to the reels for the current spin.
  • Magic Beanstalk: Can transform any reel into stacked wilds with a multiplier of up to 7x
  • When You Wish Upon a Star: Guaranteed Big Win.

Wish Upon A Jackpot Megaways Slot Bonus Features

Three or more bonus scatter symbols landing anywhere in view will trigger the free spins feature. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any benefit to hitting more than three of them, but you can at least win additional free spins whilst the round is active.

Free Spins

Before the bonus round begins, you’ll be asked to pick an orb in the same manner as if the fairy godmother modifier had activated during the base game. The three modifiers have been enhanced significantly for the bonus round:

  • Pigs Can Fly: Turns several random positions into wilds.
  • Golden Arrow Mystery: A new ‘prince charming’ symbol is added to the reels, in addition to many additional mystery symbols.
  • Magic Beanstalk: Can now turn reels 2, 3, 4, or 5 into stacked wilds with multipliers of up to 7x each.

Pros

  • Bigger jackpot, higher RTP, and far more payways. As far as the numbers are concerned, this game is undeniably superior to the original in every possible way.
  • The modifiers have been improved, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that they now activate far less frequently – perhaps I was just unlucky though.
  • Things can get really crazy during the generous Magic Beanstalk free spins!

Cons

  • The Magic Beanstalk spins are so good that I always felt disappointed if I ended up picking one of the other free spin modes.
  • Most of the symbols on the paytable have very small returns. Even the 25x offered by the game logo symbol is average at best, even by Megaways standards.

Final Thoughts

This is a well-presented online slot with a couple of good features, but the low RTP and small maximum jackpot cap let it down. Nevertheless, my opinion of the game definitely improved during the time that I was testing it, and it’s actually a fair bit better than my first impressions suggested. Front Runner Link & Win might just be worth a look, after all!
