I was expecting a whole lot of features from a game like this, and the developer hasn’t let me down! Zombie Apopalypse Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
There has been a recent spate of zombie-themed slots, perhaps unsurprising given the popularity of TV shows and movies based on this topic. The most obvious example has to be NetEnt’s recent “Zombies” online slot, but there have been many more from other developers too. NetEnt’s game seemed to take a lot of inspiration from The Walking Dead and was somewhat darker in tone than AvatarUX’s effort. Zombie aPOPalypse isn’t quite on the same level of parody as Shawn of the Dead or anything like that. Still, it definitely has a more light-hearted feel to it, most obviously indicated by the cartoon-style graphics on the reels.
As ever with a game that has so many pay ways, you probably shouldn’t expect too much from the winnings on the paytable of this game – don’t worry, though, as it pays from both directions, and the spreading multipliers give you lots of opportunities to score big wins. Now that I’ve set your expectations a little, here’s the lowdown on the pay table… the red character has a return of 2x your bet for a full pay way of five-of-a-kind, followed by 1x for the orange and purple characters, then 0.75x for the green and blue ones. There are three medium-paying symbols, oddly represented by a severed baseball cap, football, and bow tie, and just three royal symbols making up the bottom section of the paytable.
The minimum bet is €0.20 per round, whilst the maximum of €40.00 per spin should be more than enough for any player. On a game as volatile as this, the last thing you want to do is bet tens of euros every couple of seconds!
Base Game & Modifiers
The regular game uses a 5×4 reel set which expands to 5×5 during the bonus round. There are 1,024 pay ways from left to right and another 1,024 from right to left. During the bonus round, this again expands from 2,048 to a maximum of 6,125. A bonus bet option is available, as well as a bonus buy facility. That’s the basics, but there is plenty more to discuss yet!
Multipop Feature & Infectious Multipliers
Whenever a symbol forms part of a winning combination, it will be immediately replaced by a new symbol, similar to a rolling reels game. The new symbol will have a +1 multiplier added to it, and each time this occurs, the multiplier will spread to a new cell. The new multipliers will spread to cells with no multiplier first, and then cells with an existing multiplier will be upgraded, up to a maximum of 5x.
Bonus Bet
For a cost of 25% more than the regular spin price, you can upgrade your odds of winning a bonus round by 100%. This means that you should see twice as many bonus rounds at the cost of just 25% more, which seems like a good deal to me!
Zombie Apopalypse Slot Bonus Features
Hitting three or more scatter symbols during the base game will trigger the free spins feature, which is played on an enlarged grid size of 5×5.
During this mode, the number of payways is increased from 2,048 up to a maximum of 6,125. The maximum cell multiplier is also increased from 5x to 10x, and adding a multiplier to all cells on an entire reel will award an extra two free spins on top of your outstanding total.
The number of free spins awarded is determined by the number of triggering scatters – three scatters’ award 10 free spins, whilst four or five will award 12 or 15 free spins, respectively.
Gamble Feature
Before your bonus round begins, you will be presented with the gamble wheel, which allows you to try and win additional free spins by risking your current bonus round. I don’t usually recommend features like these, and this game is no exception. You can continue gambling up to a maximum of 20 free spins if you wish; more than is available from hitting the scatters alone, but more often than not, you will lose your feature if you choose to employ this option.
Bonus Buy Feature
For a cost of 100x the usual bet, you can buy a normal three-scatter bonus round with ten free spins, whilst for 500x the regular stake, you can upgrade this to the 20 free spin bonus round instead. That’s a heavy price to pay, and it’s up to you to decide if it’s worth it!

Zombie and slot fans alike are bound to appreciate this game – the huge maximum win of 20,000x your stake always feels like a possibility when you are in the bonus round, and even the base game, with its spreading multipliers, throws out some huge wins every now and again.
