The first thing that struck me about Booming Games latest title, named Kim’s Wild Journey, was the beautifully smooth animation as the game transitions from loading to the main game screen itself. Sometimes the small things really can be the most impressive. I feel as if I should also mention right now that the animation effect of rocks falling from the top of the reels – pretty though it is – is going to become extremely annoying for those who live in countries where “quick spin” options are no longer allowed. In terms of vitals, we have a 20-pay line slot with an RTP of 95.4% and a maximum advertised win of “over 15,000x stake”.
Presentation aside, we’ve got a few bits and pieces, all of which are prefixed by “Kim’s” for some reason… I’ll be dropping that when mentioning these throughout my review. Kim’s Wild Journey Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Deciding which theme to catalogue this slot under is a tough decision – sure, it could be seen as an Ancient/Mayan kind of theme… though it doesn’t really have as many elements which suggest that kind of thing as a game like Gonzo’s Quest. It’s much brighter than Book of Dead but has a similar kind of explorer vibe… and the character does look an awful lot like a female version of Indiana Jones, which reminds me a lot of Book of Ra – the original inspiration for Book of Dead. And what about the treasure chest in the foreground with all the scattered gold coins? I guess the most accurate way of describing the Kim’s Wild Journey online slot is that it is a mixture of themes.
The ”Major” symbols in Kim’s Wild Journey are Kim herself, paying 12.5x for a full line of five-of-a-kind, a treasure map and magnifying glass, paying 7.5x for all five, a pair of binoculars at 5x, and a telescope at 2.5x for five-of-a-kind of those. These numbers all looked very low to me, especially in comparison to other Booming Games titles that I have played in the past… by the time I had finished testing the game, however, it all made sense – it’s all about those additional wilds mentioned in the first section, along with multipliers of up to 6x during the free spin bonus round.
Booming Games has their usual two methods of settings your stake once again here – two buttons in the bottom left-hand corner either side of your current stake allow you to make quick changes from spin to spin, whilst the stack of coins located directly above your balance in the bottom-right corner opens a separate page where all possible staking options are displayed, and you can pick anywhere from €0.20 to €20.00 per spin. Sorry, what? A maximum bet of €20.00 per spin? That’s scarily sensible… I had better regain my composure before writing the next section, I think.
Base Game & Modifiers
The playfield used by Kim’s Wild Journey has an unusual (for a pay line-based game) 5×4 reel area, which is potentially another factor in why the payouts shown on the paytable are also a little bit unusual. You would expect there to be a few more pay lines bearing in mind the enlarged reel area – there are just twenty, which is sometimes considered low even for a standard 5×3 reel game. Still, Kim’s Wild Journey online slot appears to manage just fine with this setup.
Cascading Reels Feature
Many games feature cascading or rolling reels, whereby each winning combination is immediately removed from the screen allowing new symbols to drop in and permit many sequential wins from a single paid spin. There are far fewer games, however, which offer any kind of extra feature on top of this except during their free spin bonus rounds.
In Booming Games Kim’s Wild Adventure video slot, the developer has been a tad more generous – there are three wild levels, with one additional wild symbol being awarded for each consecutive spin. So, imagine you hit the spin button and score a small win, once the reels have been re-filled, a wild symbol will be added to the screen in a random position. If you win again, the process will repeat, except this time with two wild symbols being added.
This can repeat for a second time, after which three wild symbols will be added to the reels. Every subsequent cascade will also have three wild symbols added, although I noticed that I won much less often after around four to five cascades. Co-incidence, or just bad luck? You decide.
Kim’s Wild Journey Slot Free Spins Feature
There is also a free spin-based bonus round which comes with its own set of multiplier levels, which work in combination with the random wilds described in the “Cascading Reels Feature” outlined in the previous section. You’ll need to hit a minimum of three scatter symbols to receive eight free spins, whilst four and five scatters will reward you with ten or twelve free spins respectively.
During the free spins feature, an additional scatter collector symbol is added to the reels. Each time one of these symbols appears, it will be added to a new collector meter, shown above the playfield for the duration of the bonus round. Each time you collect three scatter collector symbols, you will advance by one through each of the special multiplier levels.
At level one, the cascading reels work exactly as they do during the regular game. Make it to level two, however, and you will also receive a 2x multiplier when you get your first wild symbol, a 3x multiplier for your second, and a 4x multiplier each time you hit more than three consecutive wins from a single free spin.
Levels three and four progress predictably – level three ups the multipliers to 3x, 4x, and 5x, whilst level four maxes out at 4x, 5x, and 6x. I found it quite difficult to reach these later levels despite plenty of bonus buys during testing, and only saw the fourth level once with two free spins remaining. Again, I don’t know if I was just unlucky, but my winnings for that particular bonus were very high, so it wouldn’t be too big of a stretch to guess that levels three and four don’t appear very often.
Bonus Buy Feature
As a final note, you can purchase the free spin bonus round for 75x your current stake if this is permitted within your jurisdiction. This seems like a very reasonable price to me and I’d recommend giving this a try if you can’t be bothered waiting for the scatters to appear… which has to be the majority of slots players, I would wager!
Kim’s Wild Journey Slot Review Final Thoughts
Another bullseye for Booming Games. Can these guys do no wrong? I don’t want to jinx them, so I aren’t going to go that far, but they are certainly pumping out a string of top-quality slots and have barely put a foot wrong recently. Keep up the good work – who knows, perhaps these guys will be the next Play’N’Go or Big Time Gaming.
