Moon Shadow (SG Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

It might be the time of the year when we’re celebrating a bit more sun, but the moon at night remains a sight that is a thing of beauty. Light & Wonder has harnessed the serene and peaceful attractiveness of the moon in its latest slot release, Moon Shadow, a mythical, mystical, and magical slot that offers an interesting Big Bet Game mode, offering 20 paylines instead of the 10 featured in the base game. The 5×3 slot also has a free spins bonus with one random regular symbol converted into a wild symbol. Let’s jump straight into what you can expect from this medium volatility slot with a 96.07% RTP.

As you’d expect, Moon Shadow is set on a backdrop of the night sky in what looks like a fantasy world. On the reels, you’ll come across creatures of the night, such as Wolves and Owls, and when they line up across the paylines, you’ll receive payouts of up to 200x the stake. However, trigger the free spins bonus via the base game or the Big Bet Game mode, and those symbol combination payouts could be up to 500x.

In case you’re unaware, Light & Wonder is the iGaming casino game developer formerly known as Scientific Games. The company has quite a rich history in the gambling industry, having been established back in 1973. However, it was in 2022 that the powerhouse, which has acquired the likes of Barcrest, WMS, NYX Gaming, and Bally Technologies over the years, rebranded to Light & Wonder. The company now has a huge portfolio of slot games, including many we have reviewed here at demoslot, such as Starmania 2, Squid Game One Lucky Day, and Invaders Takeover, just to name a few.

Back to Moon Shadow, and the next port of call is to take a look at the payouts available. The Wild symbol, which only appears in the free spins bonus game and will substitute for all regular symbols, has a top return of 500x the stake for a 5-symbol combination. The Owl is the best of the premium symbols, with up to 200x up for grabs, while the Wolf and Flower both pay up to 120x. The Ace, King, and Queen comprise the lower-value symbols, all returning a maximum of 100x for a winning combination of five.

Finally, in this part of our review, we end with the possible staking options you can choose when playing Moon Shadow for real money. These begin at €0.10 a spin and max out at a whopping €500.00, although this amount is likely much lower at most online casinos.

Moon Shadow Slot Base Game

Moon Shadow Slot Base Game
Moon Shadow slot base game

There are two game modes to choose from on the Moon Shadow slot, a regular base game or the Big Bet Game. I’ll walk you through the latter in a second, but the regular base game is played across 5 reels and 3 rows with 10 fixed paylines. When three or more matching symbols land on a payline starting from the leftmost reel, you receive a payout for that combination.

Big Bet Game

Alternatively, you can activate the Big Bet Game, which lets you buy 5 spins on reels containing 20 paylines. You can buy 5 spins for 10x your current bet or 5 at 20x. The RTP in this mode is 98.01%, which is better than the 96.07% in the standard game.

Moon Shadow Slot Bonus Features

Moon Shadow Slot Free Spins Feature
Moon Shadow slot free spins feature

It’s possible to trigger the free spins bonus from either of those game modes, and doing so requires landing a scatter symbol on reels one, three, and five.

Free Spins Feature

You receive an initial 10 free spins but also get between 4 and 8 additional spins whenever the scatter symbol lands on the fifth reel. At the start of the bonus, one random regular symbol is chosen to be a wild symbol for the duration of the spins.

Pros

  • Two game modes - one with 20 paylines.
  • Land-based players will recognise this popular game from the betting terminals.

Cons

  • The design looks a little tired.

Moon Shadow Slot Final Thoughts

Having a choice of two game modes is a nice touch, but there's not much else I can see is massively appealing in the Moon Shadow slot. The free spins bonus isn't much cop as all you really get is a wild symbol and the possibility of up to 500x the stake wins. For me, Moon Shadow is about as average as it gets, but for those who love playing it in land-based arcades and bookmakers, I can certainly see the appeal.
